THACCCSA Metro Cup- Soccer and Netball

Senior Boys Soccer

On Tuesday we competed in the Senior Metro Cup Competition in Tamworth. The team drew 0-0 in their first game and then progressed to the semi-finals after winning 4 games straight.

The boys won the semi-final and laced up for the 7th time to play Wyong Christian School in the grand final. It was a nail-biting affair with plenty of action and skill on display. Unfortunately, Wyong scored with 2 minutes to go with the final score 1-0. Understandably the GPCC were disappointed after leaving nothing on the pitch and I was exceptionally proud of their effort throughout the day. It was a privilege to coach them.

A big thanks to all the boys and their parents for bringing them out to Tamworth. Thank you to Anthony Burling for assisting with coaching and warming the boys up. A special thanks to Mr McSwan who organised the day and Mr Moody who selected the team and trained them in the lead up to the day.

Finally, I am thankful God for blessing the day with perfect weather, good sportsmanship, safety and an opportunity for the boys to display their talents.

Junior Soccer Team

The Junior team gathered at Gipps St Sporting Fields Tamworth on Tuesday for a warmer than expected shot at the Zone Metro Cup title. This event was cancelled last year due to poor weather, so it was nice to have an opportunity to play some games of soccer again.

The team made a conservative start with a 1-1 draw against old foes Wyong, followed by more convincing wins against Mid Coast (6-0), Carinya (2-0), Hunter (7-0) and Coast (4-0). These solid performances meant that the team finished top of their Pool and would meet Maitland in the semi-final for a place in the GF.

Maitland played well but could not keep a clean sheet for long with our team scoring some quick goals going on to win 4-0.

Appropriately we would meet Belmont in the GF as they had finished top in their Pool too. They had some good players and had deserved their spot in the final as did we. As expected, the game was very tight with excellent passing, tackling all round good soccer skills on display from both teams. It was a screamer from GPCC that broke the deadlock early in the second half followed by another well-constructed goal soon after to make it 2-0. This forced Belmont to go all out in attack and we defended stoically until a free kick was awarded and a nicely placed shot gave Belmont a goal. Some wonderful saves form our keeper and determination from the outfield players in the end resulted in a tight 2-1 win and the title of Junior Team Metro Cup 2023 winners. We now look forward to competing at State on Thursday 27 July.

Well done to the entire team Sidney V, Nash P, Max F, Enzo R, Luke P, Jad A, Tommy B, Avery G, Saoirse CD, Sebastian J, Zac G and James C (GK).

Junior Girls Netball Team

On Tuesday the Junior girl's netball team travelled to Tamworth to play in the Metro cup. In the lead up to the tournament the girls trained hard and showed great enthusiasm to do their best. Their hard work paid off, as they played extremely well against some strong competition. The girls played wonderfully as a team and had a great time representing our school. The girls were very impressive in their 5 games, showcasing their netball abilities and winning each game. We ended the day as Champions with a win in the Grandfinal to Belmont Christian College. Thank you to the parents who drove down, watched each game and helped out on the day! Well done to Lucy, Miranda, Grace, Chloe, Emily, Alice, Annabella, Josie, Sophie and Samara on a fantastic day.

Senior Girls Netball Team

The Senior Girls Netball team were amazing when they played in Tamworth on Tuesday. The sun was out for a beautiful day of netball and the girls played 4 Pool matches going through undefeated with some dominant displays against Taree, Wyong, Hunter and Gunnedah.  Throughout the games, the girls displayed not only their remarkable skills but also their unwavering enthusiasm, positive attitude, and unwavering support for one another. These performances meant they finished on top of their Pool and would meet Charlton in the Semi.

It was a tight contest from the first whistle, but the girls showcased their strength and were rewarded with another win. This then saw the Seniors come up against Belmont in the Grand Final, who had breezed past opponents up until this point. In a hard-fought match, the girls took the lead initially, but then Belmont clawed their way back into the game. Eventually the determined, but tired GPCC team were defeated, with the final score being 15-16.

It was a privilege to coach these girls and their humility and sportsmanship in each game were truly remarkable. They demonstrated respect for their opponents and officials. I look forward to seeing them continue to excel in Netball in the future. Well done Isabelle A, Grace B, Lily D, Amelia D, Ruth G, Isla J, Penny L, and Chelsea S. A big thank to all the parents who made the trip to Tamworth and cheered the girls on in every game.

CIS Primary Girls Basketball

Congratulations to Mia D who spent last week in Tamworth competing with the CIS basketball team at the PSSA tournament. The CIS team came 3rd in the pool. They came 5th in the tournament overall and the girls were awesome.

Individual Sport Trials for Primary CSSA and CIS Teams

These trials are not for GPCC school teams that we trial here at school to play at certain gala days throughout the year (as mentioned above). The CSSA or CIS trials are usually held in Sydney and students will be trialling against students from either other Christian Schools (CSSA) or other Independent Schools (CIS) and are usually recommended for those students that compete at a representative level.

Please email Mr McSwan before these dates if your child (Years 5 and 6 only) would like to be considered. They need to be currently playing in the sport and have several years’ experience (preferably at a Representative level): Parents are required to transport students to and from these trials.

CIS Cross Country

Congratulations to all our Secondary School CIS Cross Country runners who competed on Thursday 8 June  at Horsley Park.

Big shout out to five of our Year 12 students (Eloise, Angelique, Wade, Sinaed and Ondine) competing at CIS Cross country yesterday.  How amazing to have five of our Year 12 students competing at this level with all the HSC pressure and schoolwork to juggle.  Congratulations to them as it takes many hours of training and commitment.

Special mention to Wade B (Year 12), placing 5th in 17yr Boys.

THACCCSA Soccer Gala Day - Tamworth

On Friday 2 June Green Point Christian College students participated in the Zone Soccer Day in Tamworth. The day started with an early 5:00am leave time. (I would like to thank the parents for supporting their children’s hobbies and dropping them off).

All students competed incredibly throughout the day with many teams making the Grand Finals.

The Junior Girls team had a heavy first game, coming off with a loss. They managed to turn this around and make the Grand Final. The girls managed to find the strength to push the Charlton team all the way to penalty shootout. Unfortunately, they were beaten but this was a great effort.

The Junior Boys 1 Team played well the whole day. They managed to avoid conceding a goal the entire day and won the Grand Final convincingly allowing them to retain the shield for a consecutive year.

The Junior Boys 2 Team also managed to make the Grand Final after finishing second in their group matches. They fought hard but with fatigue setting in, the Wyong team proved to strong for them leaving our boys to go down 3-0 in the Grand Final.

The Senior Boys team had a strong group stage and convincingly made the semi-finals. Unfortunately for them, the Wyong Senior team came ready for this semi-final match and managed to outcompete our Boys to eliminate them.

The Senior Girls were pushed onto the back foot from the get go. With news that their coach unfortunately could not make it, the girls were left to run the team as best they could. Looming injuries also meant that the girls would have to dig in deep for the whole day. Unfortunately, this task was too great and the Senior Girls were unable to make it past the group stages.

All students had a great day and competed to the best of their ability. We look forward next year when many of our teams will get another shot at the titles. Good luck to our junior boys who will be competing at the next stage in a couple of weeks to attempt to become CIS Champions.

Mr Yule
