Head of Secondary
Mr Steve Lobsey | Head of Secondary
This week has been a good reminder of the rhythms of the school year. On Tuesday, we had students completing HSC Examinations for Software Design and Development in the morning and Visual Arts in the afternoon. On the same day, we had 120 Year 6 students from a variety of school come to their Orientation Day for Year 7, 2024. I have been teaching a Year 11 Business Studies class this year and we have now started the Year 12 Course. As one thing ends, there is a new beginning and I am sure there are many elements of your life you could apply this to.
It is a reminder at school that each of us are here for a time and then move on. For me, this brings up the question of “How will I care for what is here, so I can leave the school a better place for the people to follow?”. Our staff, students and parents all play a role in this. It includes caring for our physical resources (the natural environment as well as building and furniture) and the non-physical ones. This includes the culture of the school, which is heavily influenced by our relationships. For example, is GPCC a place where students care for their peers? Do parents and teachers work in partnership in helping the children enrolled here? The better we can do theses things, the greater legacy we will leave for the families and staff who are to come.
Year 12 Geography and Aboriginal Studies Trip
Year 12 Geography and Aboriginal Studies classes enjoyed a week-long trip out West. Visiting Brewarrina and the Warrumbungles, students studied the dry-land river systems, visited a cotton farm, consulted with local Aboriginal Elders and visited a cultural site. The trip was designed for students to complete the practical components of fieldwork (Geography) and community consultation (Aboriginal Studies) of which they had learnt in theory in the classroom.
Students conducted fieldwork including a range of water tests, a river cross section and observations of water usage and the value placed on different ecosystems. Through engaging with community, Aboriginal Studies students started their Major Project for the HSC. What a great way for these students to begin year 12!

HSC Major Works Nomination for Shape Exhibition
Two of our 2023 Year 12 students have been nominated by NESA for their HSC works in Industrial Technology.
Eloise S and Madison B have both been nominated for Shape exhibition which is held each year at the Powerhouse Museum and showcases a curated selection of projects from all TAS subjects that entail a Major Work of some kind.
This is a great achievement for these students and is the result of a lot of hard work and dedication by the students and their teacher – Mr Graham Crawford.
Congratulations Eloise and Madison.
