Head of Secondary
In a 1994 documentary, Nelson Mandela said "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.". If we do something which we find easy, we don’t need courage to be able to do it. Some people need courage to swim in the ocean, to try a new sport or to speak in front of a crowd. Other people can do all three with no feelings of fear and therefore don’t need courage to do them.
This week I spoke at our assembly about my own fearful situation I dealt with last year, and how God very obviously communicated Joshua 1:9 to me – “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” It is a story not easily told in writing but you could ask your child about how this was spoken to me.
The first part of this verse is a command to not be fearful – to be strong and courageous. But how can you do that? How can you not be afraid, when you are afraid? The second part of the verse gives the answer – because God is with you in your challenges. If I know that the One who created the universe is on my team, I know there is nothing I cannot overcome.
We are going to be using courage as a theme of this term. In assembly, we will be looking at different ways in which courage comes up in school life.
