Socially Engaged

A key element of our learner profile is for our students to be socially engaged.

It states that;
"We are designed to serve and help others, and to redeem the brokenness of the world."

This is a key part of the learner profile, giving shape to the purpose of a Green Point Christian College education.

As we seek to equip students toward lives of redemptive action, it naturally ought to ensure that we become learners who are concerned about the world around us.

As a Christian School this desire to be socially engaged comes from the words of Jesus. In Matthew 22, a legal expert asks Jesus to outline the most important Law. Jesus’ responds with the following statement.

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Jesus here clearly articulates that the greatest command - and the loftiest goal - we have is to love our neighbour. To show sacrificial concern for the other. This is the example Jesus gives us in his life, death and resurrection. In His life, He regularly cared for those that were on the margins of society. In His death, He showed his love for us by humbling himself to death on the cross and paying the penalty of all our sins. In His resurrection, He conquered death and demonstrated his power over sin and death, confirming his promise.

This is the story that we get to be a part of now. It is this story that reshapes our imagination of what can be, it changes our perception of what a ‘good life’ is. When we live out of this story, we no longer live for ourselves, but we live for others. Part of this is to actively cultivate and learn how to be socially engaged.

Here at Green Point Christian College we encourage our students to not simply live for themselves, but to be aware of the many stories around them. To love the people that God brings into their world, to get to know their stories and in doing so they co-labour with Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to be healers and restorers of this world.
