GPCC Public Speaking Competition

Later this term, students will have the option of entering a public speaking competition at GPCC.

All students will be participating in some oral presentation lessons with their teacher over the coming weeks as part of the usual curriculum. However, students may choose whether or not to take part in the competition. There will be a choice of 3 topics (to be announced in Week 6) and students are welcome to spend time at home preparing for the competition. We ask that parents do not write speeches for their children as we want to showcase each student’s true ability. Slideshow presentations and the use of props or AI writing tools is not permitted. However, palm cards are allowed. Speech timings should be 1-2 minutes for Stage 1 (K-2), 2-3 minutes for Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) and 3-4 minutes for Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6). Students who choose to enter the GPCC Public Speaking Competition will present their speeches to their classmates in Week 9. Class winners will progress to the final stage of the competition, where they will deliver their speech to their peers, teachers and parents in Week 10 where a panel of judges will select a winner and a runner up for each Stage. Thank you to Mrs Lines and Miss Batchelder for organising this exciting new event. Stay tuned for more information to come.

Year 2 Literacy

Pete_the_Sheep.png

Year 2 have been studying the text ‘Pete the Sheep’ by Australian author Jackie French. As part of their learning, they made posters to advertise Pete's Barber Shop and sent them to Jackie French who replied:

"Thank you for the coloured posters! The coloured sheep are amazing! I love the range of prices too...though maybe a haircut would be less than a million dollars, even for a very grumpy polar bear. I hope you all find thousands of fabulous books. Every best wish, Jackie French"

School Box "Learning Moments"

An exciting feature of School Box teachers are beginning to implement is "Learning Moments". This is a fantastic tool that allows you to see and hear about the learning that your child is doing in class. When a learning moment has been uploaded to School Box, you will receive a notification via a summary email which will direct you to open School Box. Please note that School Box only allows you to see your child’s learning moments to maintain privacy.

Primary Choir

Each Tuesday morning, Mrs McKeown and Mrs Bourke lead rehearsal with the Primary Choir. There are many benefits to participating in a choir such as building self-confidence, teamwork skills and developing performance abilities. In addition to these benefits, singing in a choir can also be a lot of fun! The Primary Choir perform regularly at special events such as the College Easter Service, special assemblies and Christmas Carols.  If your child would like to participate in the Primary Choir, details are as follows:

Who: Students in Grades 1-6

When: Tuesday Mornings 8:00am – 8:30am

Where: CAPA Theatre

Teachers: Mrs McKeown and Mrs Bourke

Please note that weekly rehearsals are essential if students wish to participate in the Primary Choir.

Uniform

Thank you for ensuring that your child is wearing our school uniform correctly and has a school hat ready to wear each day. Occasionally, there are unexpected circumstances where your child may need to be out of correct uniform, of which we are understanding. However, please send a quick email or a written note with your child to their teacher to explain this.

Smart Watches

If your child wears a smart watch with messaging capabilities, please remind them to switch their device to ‘school mode’ during the day. They are not permitted to use their watch for any functions other than to tell the time while they are at school.

NAPLAN 2025 Parent and Carer Information

Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is sat by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. NAPLAN 2025 will take place from Wednesday 12th March to Friday 21st March. The College’s timetable will be released soon.

NAPLAN is just one part of our school’s learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school, so the best preparation is their everyday classroom learning. Our school will also undertake activities to help students become familiar with the types of questions and tools available in the online tests. The public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) is available for you to see the format of the online tests.

Further information about NAPLAN is available on the NESA website. (https://www.nsw.gov.au/education-and-training/nesa/naplan) and the NAP website (https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/for-parents-carers).

If you have any questions about NAPLAN participation, exemption or withdrawal please contact Mrs Jane McLarty, Deputy Principal (Secondary) jmclarty@gpcc.nsw/edu.au
