Perseverance

At Green Point Christian College, we are committed to nurturing not only the academic growth of our students but also their character and faith. A key virtue we can instil in our children is perseverance, a quality deeply rooted in Scripture and affirmed by modern research.

The Bible speaks powerfully about the value of perseverance. Romans 5:3–4 reminds us, “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” This passage highlights that enduring challenges and suffering is not a detour from growth, it is a key path to it.

Contemporary research supports this biblical truth. Angela Duckworth, in her work on "Grit", defines it as the combination of passion and sustained persistence toward long-term goals. Her studies show that grit is a stronger predictor of success than talent or intelligence. Similarly, Carol Dweck’s "Growth Mindset" theory teaches that when students believe their abilities can be developed through effort and learning, they are more likely to persevere through setbacks and embrace challenges.

James 1:12 further encourages us: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life.” As a Christian school, we believe perseverance is not only about academic or personal success. It is about the whole person, it is about cultivating wisdom, spiritual maturity and becoming more like Christ.

As parents, you play a crucial role in shaping this mindset. Encourage your children to see mistakes as learning opportunities. Celebrate effort as much as achievement. Share stories of your own perseverance and how God has worked through those moments. Most importantly, remind them that they are never alone, God walks with them through every challenge.

Together, let’s raise young people of resilience and Godly character who understand that perseverance is not just a skill, but a calling. It is how we grow, how we serve, and how we honour God in all we do.
