Head of Secondary

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary

There has been a significant increase in the use of vapes across the Central Coast because in the eyes of many it is seen as a harmless activity.

Studies have shown this not to be case. We have had a number of incidents here at school where vapes have been brought in and used in various areas of the College.

The College treats bringing, supply and use of vapes at the College the same as tobacco, drugs or alcohol. It is considered an extremely serious discipline issue.

Please continue to make strong decisions in helping your children to make wise choices in the practices they undertake.

You as parents are in a position to influence the choices your children make in relationship to the use of the above substances and it is the consistency of good parenting across the community that will stop these actions becoming habits.

Four E-cigarette Health Risks for Kids

E-cigarette use has become common, but there still seems to be a smoke screen concealing its true impact on health. A growing body of evidence shows that smoking e-cigarettes, or vaping, may be even more dangerous than smoking cigarettes.

An e-cigarette, or vape pen, is an electronic device that heats a pod of liquid, turning it into vapor that contains nicotine, flavorings and other substances. At issue is what chemicals are contained in the liquid that is being vaporised and inhaled, and how they are affecting users — especially teens. More than one in nine high school seniors in the US report vaping daily.

Compass Student Leaders' Conference

This conference provided my fellow leaders and I, a deeper understanding of the effectiveness of some thinking methods that will help us serve our school at best.

With God in control working through us and strengthening us, change is bound to happen.

They taught us that we should be the authors of culture rather than the readers, as being a Christian is to be culture resistant.

Compass spoilt us with several evening activities and especially the comfortable stay in a new unit at Morling College.

Through the many talk sessions and break times, we established great connections with other Christian leaders, one school being Belmont Christian College.

I speak for my fellow Captains in saying that we are very grateful for the opportunity and will use our gained knowledge to share with other leaders to serve our Green Point community with God in control at all times.

    Year 11 Aboriginal Studies Excursion

On 19 February, Year 11 Aboriginal Studies went on an insightful experience, having the opportunity to go on the Girri Girra Aboriginal Cultural Tours led by Tim Selwyn.
We were so honoured to have Tim and Phil take us on this journey and have them share their own personal experiences and lifelong knowledge to our class. Their wisdom not only taught us about Aboriginal culture, but also a lifelong lesson to remain humble and open to learning new things throughout life.
In class we are currently learning about Aboriginality and the Land, in which we study the connection and close relationship Aboriginal people/s have with Country and its importance to their culture and lifestyle.
Tim first took us to the Staples Lookout where we learnt the deep-rooted history of Woy Woy and the invasion that took place on the shores and the impact it had on the communities that were native.
Next we travelled to the Bulgandry Aboriginal site, viewing the rock engraving’s and interpreting their meanings and connections to Country through Tim’s guidance and wisdom.
Unfortunately, there was vandalism on some of the engravings, exposing us to the insensitive and disrespectful reality of the attempted removal of culture. Amongst the walk, Phil taught us of the practical use of the land and demonstrated how it is applied in Aboriginal lifestyle.
It showcased the resourceful nature of Aboriginal culture and gave us an in-person experience with the content we’ve been learning in class.
Conclusively, the Girri Girra Aboriginal cultural tour added to our knowledge and broadened our understanding of Aboriginal people/s connection to Country.
Tim’s wisdom and knowledge of the Land taught us things we would’ve never known through textbooks or online resources.
Our class is really appreciative of Tim and Phil sharing their knowledge and wisdom with us and we will apply this experience to our studies going onward.
    Astrid Rankin (Year 11)
