Head of Primary

Nicole_Smith_2020.jpg

Mrs Nicole Smith | Head of Primary

This week a large group of parents braved the cold, gathering in our CAPA Theatre to listen to Renae Watkins from Association of Independent Schools, speak about the science of reading and how we can assist our students to reading success. Over the next few weeks I will share some of the practical tips that we have gleaned.

Focus on Reading – Comprehension

Comprehension requires us to think about what we are reading as we read. To encourage your child’s comprehension, discuss the plot, the characters and the way the story is resolved. Do this during the story or at the end. Re read favourite books to enrich your discussions and deepen your child’s understanding. Work on comprehension can begin before your child can read. Read picture books and tell stories to your child and discuss what is happening, how might characters be feeling, thinking, relate the story to their world or an experience close to home.

Year 4 Oreo Writing

Did you know a common biscuit can help with creative writing. Year 4 have written some wonderful persuasions around hotly debated topics. Have a read of three students work from Sophie, Chloe and Kaelah.
