Watching Sport
This year has been a huge year for watching sport on TV! Every year there’s always something to watch but this year, there seemed to be some big tournament on every month.
These massive competitions in 2021 that have been televised have been amazing to watch and an inspiration to many.
We’ve had the NRL and AFL competitions, with the Panthers getting up over the Rabbitohs 14-12, while Melbourne Demons dominated the Western Bulldogs in their game 140-66.
What about the sensational performance of Nicola McDermott and the Australian Team at the Tokyo Olympics? Our own Nicola won Silver medal in the Women’s High Jump, while Australia had one of their best performances ever, with 17 Gold, 7 Silver and 22 Bronze, totalling a massive 46 medals. They received their highest number of gold medals in any Olympic Games.
Ash Barty had a superb year, winning the Wimbledon Tennis Championships and a Bronze medal in the Mixed Doubles at the Tokyo Olympics. She is currently the no.1 player in the women’s competition.
Talk about inspirational ... don’t forget Dylan Alcott, the Australian wheelchair tennis player, who had his best year yet! He won the four big Grand Slam Tournaments: Australian Open, French Open, US Open and Wimbledon. He then went on to win Gold at the Paralympic Games. That is also without even dropping a set in any Grand Slam Final!
Our own Tia-Claire Toomey, the greatest female Crossfit athlete ever, continued her dominance by winning the 2021 Crossfit Games. This is her 5th title. She then backed that up by winning the Rogue Invitational just last weekend. Justin Medeiros won the men’s competition this year, after the G.O.A.T himself, Mat Fraser, retired from competing.
It has been a wonderful year to watch sport! Seeing our own heroes compete at such a high level, is definitely an inspiration to many young athletes.
Now is the time, with community sport starting to return to normal, to get out there and for our own students, to be their own inspiration.
They should be asking themselves now ... what is my goal? What do I want to achieve now? What about in 2022?
With such a tough year, especially the last four months, where lockdown and home learning may have thrown people out of a routine, it would be good to get back into it, have some goals, and start training.
I encourage everyone to start thinking of some short term and long term goals in their chosen sport. What do they want to aim for now and what is their goal for the future?
Who knows, we may have some more Australian Champions coming through the school!
