Kookaburras Stealing Food

Primary students are having issues with a group of kookaburras stealing food at recess and lunch. We are concerned that an accidental injury may occur from this activity and have sought advice from several agencies on how to mitigate the risk. The children may report to you that staff are deploying tactics like shooing, hosing, hanging decoys etc in an effort to protect the students whilst they eat.Parents, can you please make sure that lunches are well packed away in bags and not visual to our kookaburra friends and encourage students to dispose of food scraps in rubbish bins as soon as they have finished eating and of course – do not feed the kookaburras. We are hoping that the end of the breeding season along with the long holiday break will stop this issue recurring next year. Then we can all safely share the playground with our beautiful fauna.
