A few days ago, I announced to the staff that I would be stepping down as Principal of GPCC at the end of the year to assume a full time role as Executive Principal of The Melos Foundation. You should have received an email to this effect as well.
The education landscape is changing rapidly, and independent schools are facing increasing pressures from rising costs, growing compliance regulations and constant change. Directors of school companies are becoming harder to find and as we cannot legally pay Directors’ fees, these positions are becoming harder to fill. More schools are clustering together to resolve these issues and ensure they can continue strongly into the future.
Green Point Christian College Directors made the decision to explore this option four years ago and established The Melos Foundation as a vehicle to support schools in the key areas of governance, business management and leadership. They invited other schools to consider joining with GPCC to work together to ensure our survival and flourishing into the future. We have been pleasantly surprised at the response with a membership of six schools now plus a school property which we will re-open as a new school in 2025. There are three other schools in conversation with us about joining the Foundation.
The Melos Foundation Board appointed me as the Executive Principal of the group and it has become very difficult to give proper attention to the principalship of GPCC and to serve the other schools well. We had always assumed the time would come when a change would be required but it has come sooner than we anticipated. My background has for many years been in school groups rather than individual schools, so I am excited to move into the Executive Principal role full time.
The GPCC Business Manager, Mr Michael Lowbridge is also the Executive Business Manager of The Melos Foundation, and we will be making this move together. We have worked closely in both GPCC and the Foundation and are looking forward to growing the Foundation and serving all its members, including GPCC well. YVCS is also an important part of this and a Melos Foundation member. We are hoping to take the lessons we learned in establishing YVCS to other schools so that children on the autism spectrum in every location can have an environment in which they too can flourish.
The beauty of the structure we have created is that I continue to work with GPCC and will be supporting the new Principal when appointed to ensure the good work we have begun in the College continues on strongly. I have a very capable Executive team and am confident that the changes we have been making will bear good fruit in the lives of GPCC students going forward.
Thank you for your support as parents over the past four years. Without us working together we cannot make GPCC the school we all want it to be. It will be a vital part of the College’s success that we continue to partner together for the benefit of our children.

National Science Week 2023
On Friday 18 August, all classes in our Primary school merged together to celebrate National Science Week .The 2023 theme is Innovation: Powering Future Industries and incorporates the advancement in technology in all industries, especially using artificial intelligence.
Year 4 attended a Science Show with Mr Drennan from our Secondary Science department, there were several lunchtime activities focusing on innovation and invention with all the excitement culminating in a Science Fair Fun Friday focusing on flight. HUGE thank you to Mrs Reynolds for all the enthusiasm and organisation.

Smart Watches
Mobile phones / Smart Watches
Mobile Phones and Smart watches can be a valuable safety tool for travel arrangements for students and can allow the communication between parents and students during the afternoon bus trips, However these devices can also be a distraction to learning and provide students with an added perceived need to remain connected at all times.
GPCC bans the use of mobile phones and smart watches (or similar devices such as ear buds) during school operating hours (8:45am – 3:15pm). Phones are to be in bags, and not seen or used throughout the school day. Students who choose to wear a smart watch must have the connectivity of the watch disabled – eg they must not be able to use any function except tell the time. They should not be receiving or sending messages to parents throughout the day or accessing any areas of the internet via their device. We also ask that you not communicate with your child on their device during school hours as they are not permitted to use/check or interact with their devices. If devices – including watches are being used during school time (recess, lunch or class time) they will be removed from the student and given to Head of School to be collected at the end of the day.
Friendship Bracelets
Two of our students will be selling friendship bracelets to raise money for our sponsor children on Friday (Book Parade day.) Prices will range from $2-$5 and will be sold outside Mrs Smiths office.
Father’s Day Stall Friday 1 September 2023
This year we will be creating an event in Parent Lounge enabling Parents who would like the option to pre-pay for 1 x $10 Father’s Day Gift online per student. This may assist with students forgetting money on the day, however if your child forgets his/her money, they will be added to the IOU list and we will contact you for payment, we are hoping this will reduce the need to follow up so many outstanding IOU’s.
Online payments for $10 Father’s Day Gifts will close at 10pm Wednesday 30 August 2023.
We will have a square available, for students who wish to tap with a spriggy/card for payment, or students are still welcome to bring cash for payment of gifts, and their name will be marked off.
Students will be able to purchase 1 X $10 Father Gift per student, and Grandfather gifts will be $5, if your child wishes to buy an additional Father’s Day Gift they can do so after 3pm after all classes have purchased.
Mr Steve Lobsey | Head of Secondary
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” Romans 12:6a
This week has been one where the extraordinary gifts of our students have been on display. You can read below about our Senior Students who represented the College and the State at MUNA.
We celebrated our first Foundation Day Assembly this week. In addition to thinking about the past of GPCC which has helped to build it into what it has become today, we considered the role of the present students in creating a legacy for people in the future. At this assembly we saw outstanding talents of students in both the Primary and Secondary Schools.
We also had our MADD night, celebrating the work of our students who are completing HSC Major Works. I am always impressed by people who have gifts different to me, especially those who sing, dance and play musical instruments – all things I would love to be able to do!
We remember that all students are uniquely gifted and I am thankful for the wide range of opportunities our students have to demonstrate their gifts.

Bible Society Masterclass
On Tuesday August 1st a group of Green Point Christian College students attended The Bible Society Masterclass with their teachers Rebecca Gavin, Daniel Nihill and Naomi Menzies in Chatswood. The students listened to speakers Dan Paterson, Nick Wood and Erica Hamence on the topics Why Believe the Gospels, The Future Church Now and Friendships. It was an informative and encouraging day. A photo competition was run on the day and Green Point was one of the winners with our dramatic poses as they deconstructed a scene from The Titanic. The students and staff will use the prize to have lunch together this coming week.
