Being a parent is among the most rewarding and the most challenging thing that we ever get to do as human beings. Recently my wife Phoebe and I sent our youngest child, now very much a young adult, off to university. As our children haved reached these significant milestones, we have reflected on the fact that we don’t imagine we could do anything more meaningful to us than raising our children. We also reflected that the role of a parent never ends.
While I think parenting has always been full of joy and challenges, I do think that there are some specific challenges for parents today. The prevalence of technology and the ability for our children to be continually connected to groups and influences outside the family unit makes it difficult to be the primary influence in our children’s lives. The pressure we feel as parents to provide for our families is taking us away from them more than we would like. There is also pressure to have it all together in more and more unrealistic ways. Despite these pressures and challenges, parents remain the key leaders and influencers in our children’s lives.
As a Christian College we believe that parents have the responsibility to raise and form their children. We believe that this responsibility is given to parents by our Creator God.
In the Bible it speaks of this responsibility in several places. In Deuteronomy 6:6 it says, "these commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up".
This passage speaks to the role of parents as the primary educators of their children. We can see the importance of this responsibility within the Ten Commandments themselves as they command children to "Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you". This commandment calls children to respect and honour their parents as their primary influences.
Here at Green Point Christian College part of our mission is to support families as the cornerstone of a flourishing society. This means we seek to honour and uphold families as the first educators of their children. We work to bring the College’s considerable expertise in education to partner with families and work together in community.
Leading children in the way they should go takes a community and Green Point Christian College is here to work in partnership with you through the good times and through the inevitable challenges of raising kids.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your children’s teachers or other staff for support whenever you need it.

I previously worked at (and lived in) a Boarding School. As a Boarding Master I was a parent to around 35 boys and with a team of people, I was responsible for them from 3.30 after school until 8am the next morning. People with large families will know the more children there are, the more structures need to be in place to make the house run. With 35 boys, I needed to have structure.
Our weekdays included one and a half hours of study, every day of the term. The consistency of this created great habits. The boys never had issues with getting homework and assessments done. They were able to get their English novels read and do regular revision and their efforts were evident in their results.
How does one and a half hours compare to what your child does each day? There are five points I would make about this time:
- These were Year 5-7 boys. As they got older, the boys would increase homework and study by 15-30 minutes each year, so that by the time they were in Year 12 they were doing 3 hours per day, every weekday. I hope that the Year 5 boys I had were not doing more than your child is currently if they are in Years 9-12.
- The boys were not studying all of the time or for long periods of time. Many students feel one and a half hours is their whole afternoon gone but this is not the case. The boys had free time from 3.30-5.00pm, and then did 45 minutes of study/homework. They would then walk to dinner, have time playing sport or swimming, come back and have showers and call home, and then do 45 minutes from 7.30-8.15pm. They had more free time, a reflection and then went to bed, where they could read for 30 minutes before lights out. The 2 blocks of 45 minutes were a small part of a busy afternoon.
- Study time meant no phones. Studies show the negative impact of phones on focused attention, even if the phone is just on the desk and not being used. We also locked phones during studies. We also did this at night so the students did not have access to them. I would encourage you to do this – we hear many stories at school of students messaging each other throughout the night when they should be sleeping.
- These boys are competing with your child. When they reach Year 12, most students get an ATAR, which is a rank of how they do against the rest of the State. The brightest students who do not work hard will be beaten by average students who have worked hard throughout school. The boys in my care built great study habits that resulted in them doing 3 hours every day in Year 12 without feeling this is unusual. Many of the boys at the school were returning to the farm after school or hoping to play rugby – they were usually not elite students but achieved excellent ATAR’s through hard work.
- Students need a plan. In some ways, the boys I had have a big advantage of a daily routine. Students at home who find it difficult to do the required amount of homework and study need to begin planning how they are going to use their time after school and schedule in how they will study.
Starting a more comprehensive program of study and revision takes time. For some students, they may need to start with 45 minutes a day, or 2 lots of 30 minutes per day and then gradually increase the time.
Last year, I ran a study skills day for Year 12. This term I will be doing the same with Year 11 and at the end of the year I will take Year 10. If your child needs any assistance with study, please ask them to come and see me.

GPCC Sport Teams
We are looking forward to sending our teams to a number of Gala Days and competitions in Primary this year.
Students will have a chance to trial for certain school teams over the coming terms and will need to keep a close eye on the notices and listen out for Assembly announcements for when trials will be held.
The protocol for team selection is as follows:
- Teams have at least 2-3 trials before final selection.
- Unfortunately, it is simply not possible for all children who trial to be included in final teams. It is not uncommon for 60 students to trial for a team that only has 10 spots available.
- Once teams have been chosen, they will aim to have at least one training session each week before a competition.
Individual Sport Trials for Primary CSSA and CIS Teams (NOT GPCC teams)
These trials are not for GPCC school teams that we trial for here at school to play at certain gala days throughout the year (as mentioned above). The CSSA or CIS trials are usually held in Sydney and students will be trialling against students from either other Christian Schools (CSSA) or other Independent Schools (CIS) and are usually recommended for those students that compete at a representative level.
Please email Mr McSwan before these Nomination dates if your child (YEARS 5 AND 6 ONLY) would like to be considered. They need to be currently playing in the sport and have several years’ experience (preferably at a Representative level): Parents are required to transport students to and from these trials.
