Schools are busy and increasingly complex spaces. Governance, Operations, IR, HR, Finance, Buildings, WHS, Compliance. All these things swirl around and support the running of a college. At the centre of this busy swirl of activity is the engine room of our teachers and the process of learning for our students.
At Green Point Christian College we have a great and professional staff body. I am really enjoying getting to know them and have been impressed with their work.
As a Principal I have a deep appreciation for our Finance, Administration, Grounds and other support staff. I often refer to them as the oil of the school. While often in the background they are so vital to the smooth running of the College. Anyone that has lost oil in their car and had the engine seize, know how quickly that can occur.
The engine of a school as a place of learning is our teaching team. They drive the learning process and support our students in their growth and development. Working to form them towards lives of redemptive action.
Part of our College mission is to develop quality staff who serve our students well. This is an element of our mission that I am very passionate about and love developing. Therefore professional learning is an important focus to the College as we seek to meet this vital element of our mission.
I have three key thoughts that drive my thinking around staff professional learning.
Professional learning is an act of professional sanctification.
At the heart of professional learning is the desire to grow in knowledge, understanding and wisdom and to take every thought captive to Christ Jesus, both individually and communally. This involves continual refinement of our knowledge, skills and understandings to improve student learning and glorify God. Professional learning is an extension of God’s redeeming work in our lives. We have a responsibility to learn the things that will equip us to fulfil the task to which we have been called.
The purpose of professional learning is to positively impact student learning.
God has given parents the mandate to ‘train up a child in the way they should go’. Teachers partner with parents to help them fulfil their mandate by equipping students to engage with God’s world in a range of curriculum areas, and by helping to shape students’ desire for the kingdom of God. Quality teaching has a positive and enduring impact on student learning and discipleship, as well as the student’s experience of the educational process. Therefore, the professional learning of teachers focuses on improving what students learn and growing them in Christ.
Professional learning occurs in community.
In doing so, we strengthen the body of Christ and develop unity in the spirit, for God gives gifts “to enable His people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness in Christ". It is vital that we do not consider professional learning merely as an individual endeavour. Rather, individuals are mutually interdependent as they mature and grow. We are all part of one body, are to love one another, be devoted to one another, instruct one another, serve one another, teach one another and encourage one another. Trust, collaboration and sharing of gifts and expertise are therefore essential aspects of professional learning.
I am excited about the continual journey of professional sanctification and growth our staff are on, and the impact this will have on our students and the broader community.

Congratulations to the following students:

If it were up to my children to choose what they ate at every meal, their diet would be terrible. As a parent, I need to be the one who decides what they eat, for their own good. What they want is not always what they need.
Sometimes, I do let them choose. As a treat, I sometimes take them to a foodcourt and let them have whatever they like for lunch. It is a balance I need to find but one where most of the time, I need to be the one deciding what they eat.
It is an obvious example of a principle I need to apply to other areas of parenting. As a teacher, I see more and more the negative impacts of parents who let their children decide what should happen.
Another example is letting children have unrestricted access to their phone. It is what the child wants, but what they need is time to disconnect, focused study time and a good night sleep which all require them to not have their phone on them. Note that a laptop connected to the internet is used by students as a phone through messaging.
Where it becomes less clear is the desire to protect our children from challenges or difficulties compared to the need for them to learn how to overcome them. It is necessary for children to become resilient by working through difficult situations and learning that they can overcome them.
Also, children need to learn to take responsibility for their actions. As parents we like to defend our children but there needs to be the right balance there – if we step in and defend our children when they do something wrong, they do not learn to take responsibility for their actions. It may seem difficult in the short term, like me not letting my children eat M&M’s for breakfast, but teaching my children to take responsibility for their actions and accept the consequences that come with that will benefit them in the long term.

GPCC Sport Teams
We are looking forward to sending our teams to a number of Gala Days and competitions in Primary this year.
Students will have a chance to trial for certain school teams over the coming terms and will need to keep a close eye on the notices and listen out for Assembly announcements for when trials will be held.
The protocol for team selection is as follows:
- Teams have at least 2-3 trials before final selection.
- Unfortunately, it is simply not possible for all children who trial to be included in final teams. It is not uncommon for 60 students to trial for a team that only has 10 spots available.
- Once teams have been chosen, they will aim to have at least one training session each week before a competition.
Individual Sport Trials for Primary CSSA and CIS Teams (NOT GPCC teams)
These trials are not for GPCC school teams that we trial for here at school to play at certain gala days throughout the year (as mentioned above). The CSSA or CIS trials are usually held in Sydney and students will be trialling against students from either other Christian Schools (CSSA) or other Independent Schools (CIS) and are usually recommended for those students that compete at a representative level.
Please email Mr McSwan before these Nomination dates if your child (YEARS 5 AND 6 ONLY) would like to be considered. They need to be currently playing in the sport and have several years’ experience (preferably at a Representative level): Parents are required to transport students to and from these trials.
CSSA and CIS Sport trial dates: Please note these are not for GPCC school teams.

NAPLAN 2024 Parent and Carer Information
Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar, and punctuation) and numeracy.
