Learner Profile – Collaborative
Here at Green Point Christian College, one of the ways we seek to live out our purpose is through our Learner and Graduate Profile. The Learner Profile is not simply a nice image on the website, it is a document that the staff consider regularly and it helps us shape the work that we undertake here at the College. It represents the core traits and skills that we are seeking to form and nurture into our students.
One of the things that we desire for our students is the skills and character to be collaborative.
Today we live in a deeply individualistic society, our western culture’s dominant narrative is described by the philosopher Charles Taylor as expressive individualism. This idea is now so prevalent in our culture that it is largely assumed, and we rarely consider it overtly. We see evidence of it everywhere, in our public discourse, in the ongoing shaping effects of technology, and on our Tik Tok reels. Individualism has also reached into much of our work and school life, where our concern quickly is about my outcomes and my performance. This tends to drive competition and it weakens social bonds both in our schools and in our society more broadly.
Here at Green Point Christian College, we are seeking to shape our students differently to this. While we uphold that everyone is made in the image of God and therefore precious and unique. We also believe that we are called to use our diversity for the benefit of our community. That we find our best selves in the context of others and in the context of the community in which we live.
In the Bible it speaks about this idea using the metaphor of the body. In 1 Corinthians it speaks of the different parts of the body and the vitality each part has in the context of the whole. In Ephesians 4 it says.
Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
Because we understand that as humans we work best in this way, here at GPCC we seek to help our students to have the skills they need to be collaborative. Skills such as sharing, active listening, emotional intelligence, adaptability, communication, open mindedness and organisation. These skills support students to be able to collaborate with each other and spur each other on. It help them to understand themselves in the context of a community of others, strengthen their sense of social cohesion and give them a sense of belonging.

Young Leaders Day
Last Monday, our Primary student leaders attended the Young Leaders Day at the International Conference Centre in Darling Harbour.
The keynote speakers were Anastasia Woolmer, Eva Amores, Matt Cosgrove, Stephen O’Keefe, and Bryson Klein.
Each speaker shared their story to the 5,000 student leaders present and spoke of perseverance, persistence, resilience, and conquering fear in order to lead.
The students were encouraged by hearing how each speaker had overcome adversity to reach their goals. It was a fantastic day, and we look forward to seeing how our keen student leaders put the lessons they learned into practice as they serve in their roles at school and throughout their lives.
A big thank you to Miss Batchelder who supervised on the day and Mr Miller for driving.

This year STEM students would like to design, create, test and build from PVC Pipes. If you have leftover PVC piping from building or plumbing jobs, GPCC Primary would love to collect these and use to build engineering challenges. Pipes need to be clean . Lengths can be cut down. We also need any connectors Y,T,I, or L shapes to join the lengths of pipes.
Families can bring to school and leave in the STEM room - L11 (the old L1 room) or students may bring to school and leave in the plastic tubs located outside L11.
We would really appreciate the chance to recycle these offcuts. Please email Mrs Reynolds with any inquiries CReynolds@gpcc.nsw.edu.au

Avoca Beach U6 Junior Rugby (GPCC)
Dear Kindy Parents
We have an exciting opportunity to pilot an Avoca Beach Junior Rugby U6 team, playing under the umbrella of GPCC. If you and your child would like to build some great, lasting relationships in the 2024 kindy year, this is a great way to do it.
The idea is to get around 10 boys and girls to form a team to compete in the local junior rugby competition on Saturday mornings. If we get the numbers, we intend to train straight after school on the GPCC oval on a Wednesday until 4pm.
Our coach will be Mitchell Ryan in Year 9. Mitch has played representative rugby for the Central Coast for the past three years and was chosen in the U14 NSW Country Team in 2023. Mitch will be supported by coaches from the Avoca Beach Club (and his dad, Dave).
The Avoca Beach Junior Rugby Club is a really inclusive, fun and active club that supports kids through their junior sporting careers. The kids and parents also get to form great friendships that carry on into later years.
If you have a child that was born in 2018 and you would like to join an awesome footy club, please register your interest through the below link and the club will be in touch. EOI Schools Program 2024
Expressions of interest for CSSA and HZSA Duathlon/Triathlon
This is an event for those in Years 3-6. Please see the information below. It is important to note that this is different from the biathlon event which has been run in previous years and includes a cycle leg. Parents will be required to coordinate a team of students to participate in their age group prior to contacting Mr McSwan.
Parents will also be required to transport their child and gear (bike) to and from the event.
Please let Mr McSwan know via email smcswan@gpcc.nsw.edu.au if you would like to enter a team, which event they will be competing in and which leg each competitor will be completing by Friday 22 March.

GPCC Sport Teams
We are looking forward to sending our teams to a number of Gala Days and competitions in Primary this year.
Students will have a chance to trial for certain school teams over the coming terms and will need to keep a close eye on the notices and listen out for Assembly announcements for when trials will be held.
The protocol for team selection is as follows:
- Teams have at least 2-3 trials before final selection.
- Unfortunately, it is simply not possible for all children who trial to be included in final teams. It is not uncommon for 60 students to trial for a team that only has 10 spots available.
- Once teams have been chosen, they will aim to have at least one training session each week before a competition.
Individual Sport Trials for Primary CSSA and CIS Teams (NOT GPCC teams)
These trials are not for GPCC school teams that we trial for here at school to play at certain gala days throughout the year (as mentioned above). The CSSA or CIS trials are usually held in Sydney and students will be trialling against students from either other Christian Schools (CSSA) or other Independent Schools (CIS) and are usually recommended for those students that compete at a representative level.
Please email Mr McSwan before these Nomination dates if your child (YEARS 5 AND 6 ONLY) would like to be considered. They need to be currently playing in the sport and have several years’ experience (preferably at a Representative level): Parents are required to transport students to and from these trials.
CSSA and CIS Sport trial dates: Please note these are not for GPCC school teams.

Staff Member of the Week
this week our staff member of the week was awarded to Hayley Hogger.
Hayley deserves recognition for her tireless work as Finance Leader, above and beyond doesn't seem to cut it. She goes about her day gracefully and positive which sets a great tone for the team. She is a diligent worker, problem solver and has held the GPCC finance team together while we navigate a list of challenges and implementing a great triage response system. Her communication is always open and she has time for everyone's calls or questions, often getting sidetracked working out a solution for someone instead of moving forward with normal tasks.

NAPLAN 2024 Parent and Carer Information
Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar, and punctuation) and numeracy.
NAPLAN 2024 will take place from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March. The schedule of testing will be sent at the beginning of March. Secondary students please note that the Secondary Athletics Carnival is on Thursday 14 March.
NAPLAN is just one part of our school learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school.
In preparation for NAPLAN, our school will undertake activities to help students become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests. These activities are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not required nor recommended.
The public demonstration site https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site is available to see the types of questions, tools and functions used in the NAPLAN tests.
Further information about NAPLAN is available on the NESA website (https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/k-10/understanding-the-curriculum/naplan/parent-information).
If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact your child’s teacher, Year Advisor or the Deputy Principal, Mrs Jane McLarty, jmclarty@gpcc.nsw.edu.au
