Last term some of you took part in a survey we had undertaken for us by a group called SEED. The purpose of the survey was a review of the embeddedness of the College’s Purpose Statement, Graduate Profile and Motto. We launched the new focus for our school over two years ago, so wanted to see how well we as a school community understood that and had embraced it.
A reduced summary report is available at this link. I want to highlight a few things from it and explain where we go from here. Although the rate of return from some groups was too small to be statistically valid, we are always interested in what members of the community have to say. The survey has provided us with really useful information and allows us to plan how we progress this going forward.
Most people know our Motto and are aware of the Purpose Statement and the Graduate Profile. These all seem to have acceptance and support but it is clear that there is still some lack of clear understanding about elements of the Purpose statement and the Motto. The past two and a half years have been full of the distractions of COVID and so although we have taken a number of opportunities to publish explanations of these statements, it is very understandable that many of us have not been focused on things like this.
The key action we will undertake is a process of greater explanation of the meaning of our Motto, Purpose Statement and elements of our graduate profile. It is vital that we all have a common understanding of these things if they are to be significant in guiding our actions and development as a community.
The element in the Graduate Profile that all survey participants believe needs the most work by us as a school is ‘critical and creative thinker’. This element was selected as part of the process of selecting what elements to include in the profile because it features so strongly as a need in the 21st century as our world undergoes such rapid change. I believe this has always been an essential element for a well-educated person.
I trust you find the report interesting and be assured that we will be actioning the recommendations. The College Board had a session with the Survey Director and are committed to seeing us implement the recommendations. As we seek to be a purposeful school, this will help us embed these elements into our processes and actions as a means of guiding us to see students grow in a particular direction. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments about the report. Thanks again to those who participated.

What a wonderfully engaging Book Week we have all had. A HUGE thank you to Mrs van Wyk and Mrs Hurst , together with all the Library staff for the competitions, Buddy Reading, Author visit from Kirrily Lowe, literacy activities and of course organising the Book Parade and Fair. We truly have made up for lost time and demonstrated with pomp and fanfare our love of literacy and learning together.
Here are some snaps of the past week and exciting activities we have participated in. Our Week 8 Messenger will feature all our Book Week activities.

Uniform News
As the weather begins to warm up our hats need to come out and be ready for school each day. Following Father’s Day ALL students will be expected to have a hat at school to be allowed to play outside. Please take time to ensure that your child has a hat at school each day and that it is labelled with their name.
Many children are coming to school without their hair tied up. Our uniform policy outlines that long hair ( below the collar) needs to be tied back. This not only assists us in looking tidy but also ensures hair is out of students faces as they read and learn.
Meetings with Parents
From time to time it is necessary to meet with your child’s teacher. Catching teachers at their classroom before school is not a helpful practice as teachers often have before and after school commitments or preparation to complete. Our teachers are always happy to make a time to meet with parents in person or talk over the phone when you have made an appointment.
Years 3 and 4 Visit Secondary Science
Our Years 3 and 4 students are learning about forces and energy. They had a Secondary school workshop experience with Mr Yule and his Year 9 helpers.

Mobile Phones in Secondary School- A great improvement!
At the start of Term 2 this year, the College placed a ban on the use of mobile phones during school time for Secondary students Years 7 - 10. The reason for this ban was to encourage students to engage in conversation, connect with each other, exercise and look up at the world around them, rather than relying on their phones for connection and entertainment.
Whilst incidents of students using their phones has reduced significantly, we still have a small number of repeat offenders. If a phone is seen in use between 8:45am and 3:15pm, including break times, it will be confiscated for the remainder of the day. If the phone is confiscated a second time, it must be handed in at the student window every day, for five days. In both instances parents will be notified and a pastoral care entry will be made. For additional breaches more significant consequences will result.
Year 9 Camp
This week our Year 9 students braved the cold to camp out at Galston. They participated in many team building activities, including a hike, camping under the stars, challenge by choice and an indoor rope challenge. Huge thanks to Mr Oppel, Mr Masters, Mr Smith, Mrs Kirk, Mrs James and Mr Leonard who accompanied the group.

Year 10 Commerce - Mock Trial
Students in Year 10 Commerce have engaged in the Legal System this week by running a Mock Trial in the classroom. Students were assigned different roles within the courtroom and eagerly studied the case materials. The Prosecution prepared convincing opening arguments and called eyewitnesses to the reckless driving incident. The Defence Lawyers conducted a thorough cross-examination of the witnesses and interviewed their own expert witness on traffic laws and regulations. The courtroom was complete with a judge, bailiff swearing in the witnesses, jury and a media reporter taking notes on the case. The students had an excellent time, and we are eagerly awaiting the jury's verdict as they continue to deliberate.
Australia Day by Siena P
This is the third instalment in our spotlight on the HSC Aboriginal Studies Major Projects. If you missed the last two, please look back at week 3 & 4 Messenger publications – they are worth it!
Siena P explored the discourse around Australia Day. Through a series of consultative interviews with Aboriginal community and an extensive school survey she gained a broad understanding of the key feelings towards Australia Day and why they exist. Siena presented her project as a speech.
Siena began her speech with an acknowledgement: “I would like to acknowledge and pay respects to the elders, past, present and future. I would like to acknowledge the Darkinjung, Awabakal, Guringai and every other First Nations person’s Country in which I live and study upon.”
Tensions around this public holiday expressed the colonial history of Australia. Siena explains…”the different opinions (run) on the themes of celebration, survival, invasion and change the date…” After her research Siena expressed that colonisation, being “an act of invasion”… is seen as something that happened so long ago, non-Aboriginal people tend to ignore or deny the long-term impacts, like intergenerational trauma and disadvantage. Lack of awareness and understanding around the issue results in lack of momentum for change.
This aligns with our studies of the human rights and social justice movement in the HSC course. Well done, Siena!

Preschool Story Time
Parents and preschool aged children are welcome to join us on Monday mornings @ 9:00am in the Primary library for books, craft, and fun.
I’m grateful to have gone on the Brewarrina mission trip for 2022, it was a great opportunity to learn and develop an understanding of people and communities both similar and different to those we are used to. While in Brewarrina we met Isaac Gordon who was an inspiring pastor and leader in the Brewarrina community, he welcomed us to their community and into their church family. On the Sunday that we were there they welcomed us into 2 church services and encouraged to share our testimonies. In the first few days we went to the Aboriginal Cultural Museum in Brewarrina and learnt about local history and the famous fish traps. We learnt that it may be one of if not the oldest man-made structures in the world.
The highlight for me would have had to be meeting Josie and Vera in Weilmoringle as they were the two sweetest old ladies who really showed what community was. I had a few interesting discussions with Josie and learned about her experiences in school and how different life was like for an Aboriginal person in that era. She also spoke of how there was division amongst some of their own people when it came to rights and inclusion in society. Josie and Vera then took us to an old shearing shed in Weilmoringle which everyone was quick to rush into.
Some other highlights were the hot bore baths, talking around the fire at night, visiting the Brewarrina Christian School, going to Gulargambone and meeting Pastor Henry as well as visiting Hickey’s falls. Pastor Henry shared some of his life stories which were very engaging.
I would highly recommend this trip for anyone thinking about going in the future, it was great to get some perspective and to meet new people. I’ve come to realise how lucky I am here on the Central Coast and to have a supportive school and family that are there and want the best for me.
