As we approach the end of another year, it is not unusual for some students to get a bit restless. At the moment we are dealing with a problem in our Junior Secondary classes with widespread disobedience. Perhaps because it is close to Christmas, some students feel it does not really matter what happens, but their behaviour does matter.
Schools have rules to ensure proper order amongst many students and staff. We are a microcosm of society so just as we need rules for how we conduct ourselves in Australia (or any other country), we need rules for how we conduct ourselves in our school. These rules are not onerous or demanding but help to ensure order, safe conduct, a clean environment and so on. When we ask students to wear their uniform correctly, not chew gum at school, not play with the rubbish in the bins or not duck across to the 7-11 shop after school, we are asking them to join our community by their compliance.
Disobedience is one of the great problems facing humanity. It is an issue we all face both individually and corporately. It stems from a desire to be a law unto ourselves and an inbuilt resistance to authority that all humans have. As Christians we rely on the explanation the Scriptures give us of the source of this trait. We say it began when God created the world and placed the first humans into the Garden of Eden he had built for them. They were free to do anything they liked and had only one small rule to keep – don’t eat of one particular tree. Theologians say this was a test of their will to see if they would willingly obey their Creator or not. God wanted people who freely chose to obey him and be in fellowship with him. This was a demonstration of their willingness to accept their position in relation to him and respond in loving obedience to his leadership.
The account tells us however that they succumbed to the whispering words of the Evil One who twisted God’s words to them. They ate of the fruit, disobedience entered the world and our relationship to God and to each other was changed. The issue was not the eating of a piece of fruit. Many students when confronted by disobedience, seek to downplay it and say, “ But I was only chewing a piece of gum, I was only looking for something in the bin, I was asked by mum to get something from the shop.” Disobedience is soon followed by lies and cover-up. It has a way of compounding a situation way beyond what it originally was.
Our role as parents and teachers, is to help our children see that disobedience is a big problem and it does not lead to a better way of life. It breaks relationships, harms good society and causes personal harm. We need to work together to teach our children the value and importance of obedience - willingly submitting to the rules to show our commitment to the group, to others and to our community.
Please work with us as we help our young teenagers learn the importance of this lesson so they may be equipped to be contributing citizens in society and not a drain on it.
Phillip Nash
Principal
As the academic year draws to a close it is important to create space for rest. Many of our students are tired and their routine is different. Weekend concerts, break up parties and family events can add to a busy weekend with students returning to school tired. Please be aware of your child’s emotional well-being and be sure to incorporate some ‘down time’ into each weekend.

Senior House Captains
As House Co-ordinator, I was able to select four new Senior House Captains for 2022/23 to help me run House and Sport events for the next year. This involves things like co-ordinating lunch time activities, coaching teams, carnivals, end of year BBQ and attending the 2022 Sports Leadership Summit this Friday in Penrith. After 10 students applied for this role by filling in an application form and attending an interview these four were chosen from Year 12.
Congratulations to Wade B, Lacey E, Otto K and Millie T.
I look forward to working with these students over the next year.Josie Mitchell Debating Competition
Team A consisted of: Luke J, Tirzah H, Lily M, Matilda W
Team B consisted of: Isaiah F, Cooper L, Dominic H, Grace R
Team A was given the following topics:
- That social media companies should proactively censor extremist comments on their platforms. (Affirmative)
- That victims of crime should be allowed to choose a punishment for the person who offended against them.(Negative)
Team B had to debate these topics:
- That Medicare should cover elective cosmetic surgery.(Affirmative)
- That all parents should be able to choose the gender of their child.(Negative)
Congratulations to Team A who won both of their debates convincingly.
Team B also did impressively, narrowly losing the first debate (on cosmetic surgery) but winning the second one.
This meant that Team A sailed through to the finals where they had no more than 1 hour to prepare a response to the topic of: It is more important to be beautiful than to be intelligent (affirmative).
In the meantime, Team B participated in an impromptu topic of their own which was: Parents should have the right to spy on their children (negative)…..And the results were….
Team A won the final, meaning that Green Point have won the competition for 2022.
There was a really solid sense of rapport and camaraderie evident especially within Team A which helped to give them an edge over the competition. Several of these students have never debated before. I was also really impressed with Team B who were not really given ample time to formulate and martial their arguments before the day but did particularly well (especially Isaiah F). What was particularly gratifying however was to see the way the students’ countenances brighten with confidence over the course of the day. It has really been a beneficial experience for them.
Mr Michael Samild (Secondary English Teacher)

It was a great opportunity for the Year 10 girls to share their skills and knowledge.

CSSA Year 5/6 Basketball Gala Day
Both our Senior Basketball teams competed at the CSSA (State) Gala Day in Penrith on Monday 14 November and did very well.
Senior Girls
Having won our Zone Gala Day, the Senior Girls were placed in a Pool with other strong teams winning all but one of their matches and gave up only 3 goals in those games. They eventually finished second in their group. The girls had fun, learnt new skills and were inspired to want to play basketball in the future. I’d like to thank Mr Andrew Vartan for doing such a great and committed job coaching/training the girls’ team over the last two terms.
Senior Boys
The Senior Boys Team had a great day at the State Basketball Tournament on Monday. We had a strong first game with a convincing win, not even giving up a point on defence. In the second game, we were down at half time, but the boys rallied hard with an excellent second half performance. Unfortunately, we came within two points and lost to the team that would go on to win our pool. In our third and fourth games, the boys demonstrated superior basketball skill and athleticism to finish off the day with big victories in our last two games.
We finished the day with three wins and one close loss. We placed second in our pool, which meant that we did not progress to the Semi-Final stage, but we were very competitive and came within three points of winning our pool.
I am so proud of the way our team played, they showed exemplary teamwork and respectful sportsmanship throughout the whole day.
The boys really enjoyed playing basketball together, everyone should be proud of what they contributed to the team. Well done boys!
Mr Gilmore

Jane was presented with the award in Staff Devotions on Wednesday morning. She was nominated for her ongoing care of students and staff, her dedication to her role, and her service to the College. We are so thankful for Jane’s skills, expertise and servant heart and for the wonderful example she is to us all.

Introducing the Fathering Project
The Fathering Project is an evidence-based organisation that aims to promote positive fathering behaviours and fathers’ engagement with their infants, preschool, primary school, and adolescent-aged children.
Fathers and father figures play a critical and distinct role in children’s lives and the evidence demonstrating fathers’ potential to positively influence their children’s health, social success and academic achievements is indisputable. There is further information available on this research on the GPCC website - https://www.gpcc.nsw.edu.au/community/the-fathering-project
This month we are excited to be launching The Fathering Project for the fathers and father figures of our GPCC and YVCS students.
Our launch event is on Friday 25 November at 6pm, which will be a BBQ and Paper Planes evening.
All fathers connected with GPCC (or YVCS) are invited to attend with their children. Register Now.
