I attended the Christian Schools National Policy Forum in Canberra over three days this week. It is an annual gathering of Christian School leaders from around the country. We addressed such topics as the spiritual profile of Australians based on the national census and also the National Church Life Survey, what it means to hold a faith in an increasingly secular world, the changing profile of school sectors in Australia, the rising tide of depression and anxiety in teenagers.
This gathering helps us understand and reflect on what is happening in our culture and how we as Christian school leaders might lead our schools well. They are always very insightful and challenging events. I especially appreciated the presentation by the Headmaster of Shore, Dr John Collier who is one of Australia’s leading principals. He spent 12 years as Headmaster at St Andrews Cathedral School and is currently at Shore helping them to wrestle with many of the issues we noted at the Forum. I have known John for many years and he is an insightful and wise school leader.
We at GPCC are experiencing a growing number of students who are experiencing anxiety and depression. Dr Collier pointed to a range of possible causes including, poor and unsupervised social media use, the loss of a spiritual focus in student’s lives, weak parenting, the prevalence of illicit drugs, the allure of the ephemeral and superficial in the entertainment industry and so on. There is no simple answer to all this but helping young people to have a vision of the world and its future that is hopeful rather than hopeless, is one of the keys.
At GPCC we are working on encouraging a more outward and service-oriented focus for our students. Focusing too much on ourselves and buying into the individualistic philosophy of modern Australia, is not producing the type of adult we would hope for. The Christian faith calls us to consider God and others before ourselves and is an antidote to the self-absorption that so many of our young people are falling into.
We have talked about setting up a parent support program to help you deal with the many challenges of being a good parent today. Following the ideas presented at the Forum, I have moved that up my agenda. We all want the best for our children, and we all need help to be good parents. We can work together as school and home to do this. I also encourage you to consider involvement in a local Church as another good place to get support in raising your children. It takes a village they say, well between school and Church and the sports clubs and other organisations that children and young people can get involved in, there is every reason to provide a healthy environment in which they can grow.

Reconciliation Week – 'From Little things Big things Grow'
Reconciliation week is a time for all Australians, to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. On Wednesday our Student Representative Council will conduct an assembly focused on this important issue.

Primary Girls Winter Uniform
Our new Winter Tunic is now available in the Uniform shop. As the uniform is phased in students are permitted to wear either the old check tunic or the striped tunic.
- Tunics are to be worn with a long or short sleeve white blouse with round collar and either white ankle socks or Black opaque tights. The Red Tab is to be worn with the Tunic ONLY
- Skort is to be worn with either the short or long sleeve blouse, (can be untucked) with either white ankle socks or Black opaque tights. No Red Tab is required.
The phase in of the new uniform will happen gradually over this year and next year with the expectation that all students are in the new tunic /skort in winter 2025. This means that the current year 5 and 6 students do not need to purchase the new uniform as they will be in Secondary when the change over period ceases.
No jewellery to be worn. Girls are permitted to wear one pair of either gold or silver studs or sleepers in the ear lobes and a watch. Students wearing a smart watch must have the interactivity disabled or locked during school hours. Students found using their smart watch for matters other than telling the time will have it confiscated.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Our K-2 students participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime this week along with students from across Australia. This year the focus of the story 'The Speedy Sloth' was that we are all unique and different and just need to be the best we can be. Students enjoyed having a 'slow' race and watching our teachers act out the story. Thank you to Mrs Hurst and Mrs van Wyk for the creative ways they enthuse us to enjoy reading.
Futsal Success

Each term at this time, I like to point out we are half-way through the term. In sport, half time is an opportunity to reflect on what is going well and what can be improved upon moving forward.
I encourage students to take a similar approach to their time at school. They can consider things such as:
- Have I been organised to get assessment tasks done on time?
- Have I taken advantage of opportunities to be involved in extra-curricular activities such as sporting teams, debating or the musical?
- Am I prepared for each day with the correct books, stationery and uniform?
As teachers, we are interested in learning. That suggests we are not expecting students to be perfect but we do want to see them grow, develop and improve. An important step in this is reflection to consider which areas need the most improvement?
I encourage parents to speak to their children this week about what is going well at school and what can be improved.
Camp Rock the Musical Rehearsal
A reminder that there will be a half-day rehearsal this Saturday for those cast members who can make it: 12:00pm-4:00pm in the MPC. Parents will have received an email last week regarding costumes. If there are any issues, feel free to email Mrs Rochford.
A forward notice – we have a half day rehearsal on the King’s Birthday Monday 12 June 12:00pm-5:00pm.
Thanks for all your support. Information re tickets will be available shortly.
Brewarrina Cultural Trip
Last week, two of our students, Raj S (Year 10) and Sanjay S (Year 11) went to Brewarrina for a cultural trip. Over the time the boys were away, they visited and stayed at Brewarrina Christian School, visited Brewarrina Central School, experienced the Brewarrina Aboriginal Cultural Museum and spent a day with Aunty Josie and Aunty Vera in Weilmoringle.
After arriving in the late afternoon on Monday 15 May, Raj and Sanjay along with Mr McGillivray got set up in their dorms. They met with Mr and Mrs Turner and their family and shared some time around the campfire later that evening.
The following morning the boys and Mr McGillivray did the bus run around Brewarrina where they collected the students for school. Upon arriving at school, the boys engaged in the classroom with the teachers and students and assisted with some of the teaching and learning. Sanjay was with the Year 3 students doing literacy and Maths while Raj was with Year 6 helping them with their Maths. Later that afternoon, the boys went to Brewarrina Central School where they participated with Matty (local youth leader) and the boys in the Clontarf program. They shared lunch together and participated in sport for the afternoon.
On Wednesday, after doing the bus run in the morning and playing sport with the students at Brewarrina Christian School, the boys headed to the Aboriginal Cultural Museum. The guide, Bradley educated the boys about some of the local Aboriginal History as well as seeing the ancient fish traps. This was a greatly informative and moving time for the students. We again, had a meal around the fire and a time of fellowship with the Turners and Mr Nash.
On our last day in Brewarrina, the boys did the bus run in the morning, followed by breakfast with the Brewarrina Christian School students and some more sport with the students. Following this, the boys headed to a little community called Weilmoringle where they met with two Muruwari elders, Josie and Vera. During the time with Josie and Vera, the boys were educated on the bush foods, berries for eating as well as which trees were used as medicine. They also learned that some trees are used for dying clothes and baskets. The boys had a wonderful time and even increased their vocabulary with some Aboriginal words. After a valuable time with Josie and Vera, the boys headed into town to pick up Mr Turner. While they were waiting for him, the boys played a game of footy with the local kids at the park. They thoroughly enjoyed this as did the local kids. After a very full day, everyone relaxed around the fire and enjoyed a hot meal and some marshmallows over the fire.
We headed back on Friday morning and had lots to talk about on the way home. It is fair to say that the boys were impacted and changed by their time with our friends in Brewarrina. I am pretty sure that they will be back there one day to visit.
Mr Andrew McGillivray

Central Coast Futsal Tournament
Years 3/4 Boys
On Monday the Junior Boy Futsal Team attended the NNSW Central Coast Futsal Regional Tournament at Niagara Park. The team played 3 Pool matches going through undefeated with some dominant displays against Wyong Christian School (5-1), Coast Christian (23-0) and Point Clare (6-0). I was so impressed with the level of skill the boys showed by weaving in and out of defenders, slick passing, solid defending and accurate shooting. These performances meant we finished on top of our Pool and would meet Gosford Public School in the semi. After Gosford opened the scoring we put the foot on the pedal, scoring next and eventually winning 8-1 setting up a meeting with Wyong (our first opponent) who managed to beat first place in Pool B for a spot in the Grand Final.
I was not surprised with the intent the boys showed from the outset scoring midway through the first half and then continuing with goal after goal after goal (7-1) and to be crowned winners of the day. The boys have now qualified for the next regional tournament to be played in Maitland next month.
Well done to the team for a wonderful day and excellent performances throughout. Congratulations Jad A, Luke P, Nash P, Tommy B, James C, Enzo RC and Max F.
Mr McSwan

Year 5/6 Boys
The 5/6 Boys entered the tournament with a boost of confidence off the back of a 4-1 win against St Phillips Gosford only last Friday. Right from the outset there was a real sense of determination as the boys fought out a close 3-2 win against Point Clare PS. This momentum carried us into our second game as the boys recorded a 10-0 victory against one of two Wyong Christian teams. They say when it rains, it pours, and this was certainly true as the boys continued their attacking prowess putting eight goals past the same St Phillips team, they beat on Friday in a comfortable 8-1 win. 1st in the pool and through to the Semi-finals, the boys faced Coast Christian School in what proved to be a coming of age for our defence. Coast’s skilful squad battled strong, however, with some crucial blocks and clinical finishing, Green Point were able to walk away 3-2 victors. This saw our seniors come up against the other team from Wyong Christian, who had breezed past opponents up until this point. Our boys proved to be their toughest challenge yet hanging in the game right until the final whistle. Ultimately, we were defeated 5-3 in a strong display from both sides. A fixture the boys are certainly eager to play again soon to reverse the score line.
Congratulations to Louis A, Jaxon H, Jacob G, Adam S, Hamish L, Alex L, Levi S, and Isaac S for your hard work and commendable sportsmanship throughout the day!
Mr Moody
Senior Girls
Congratulations to the Senior girls who played amazingly at the NNSW Central Coast Futsal Regional Tournament. The girls had a great day, passing the ball around very well and creating a number of scoring opportunities. I was so impressed with the way they encouraged each other and worked as a team. They were undefeated in their pool and made the grand final. It was a battle, one where both teams gave 100% in everything. The game was so tense from the opening whistle to the final siren, but the girls showed their strength and won 2-1! T The girls have now qualified for the next regional tournament to be played in Maitland next month. Congratulations to the Senior Girls Futsal Team, Phoebe N, Sophie C, Zara L, Lily D, Alleah M, Riley D, Aurora H and Lara B.
Miss Cooper

Brooke has spent hours creating, designing, printing, phoning, ballooning, photographing and smiling in order to bless and serve our school community at many events including IPSHA Deputies Day, Year 6 Formal each year, baby showers and her most recent - the Mother's Day Breakfast. With over 300 women turning out to indulge on pastries and be celebrated, Brooke created a stunning setting on our canteen forecourt complete with music, flowers and coffee cart. What a tremendous effort.
GPCC has launched a fundraising project today that will run until Sunday 4 June to help raise funds towards a truck for Pastor Isaac and the team that conduct the Rivers Convention each Easter.
You can learn more about this project at the special webpage set up for this fundraising effort - http://Qr.survival.net.au/gpcc
The fundraiser is in partnership with Survival First Aid Kits, with Green Point Christian College receiving a 25% cash return towards our project for every purchase made through our unique portal - http://Qr.survival.net.au/gpcc
As the purchaser you will also receive a 10% discount off the recommended retail price by using the code GPCC.
Please note that this fundraiser can also be shared with family and friends who may want to purchase a first kit at this time, but they will also need to use the GPCC portal (http://Qr.survival.net.au/gpcc) rather than purchase direct through the Survival website. You will see the posters up around the College and in our newsletter over the coming month.
Thank you for your support, and we are looking forward to reaching our goal together and supporting Pastor Isaac and the team as they share the good news throughout the Central West.
