Many of you will be aware that GPCC has been in the media in relation to a connection with the Hunter Valley bus crash. I cannot go into details here as the matter is of course under investigation by Police and Transport NSW. What I can say is that our staff acted appropriately, and we have sought to do everything correctly. Sadly, the media have been quick to distort the facts so be wary of believing everything you hear or read.
The world is a place of risk and none of us are exempt from it. As the old saying goes, ‘bad things happen even to good people.’ I travelled to New Zealand over the long weekend to visit my new granddaughter and discovered that the Government there have set a target of zero deaths on the roads by 2050. This is a laudable but unrealistic aim.
As Christians, we believe that every human being is affected by the Fall from grace that occurred in the Garden of Eden where the first people chose to disobey God and go their own way. Disobedience to authority remains a perennial problem even today. There will always be people who choose to disobey the rules: to drink and drive, to do drugs and drive, to go too fast and so on. We can and should work hard as a society to minimise this behaviour, but we cannot alter other human beings who will always exercise their will.
We have hope in the fact that God has made a way for us to re-connect with him and to get a fresh start where we can again be in relationship with him and live in accordance with the way of life he intended for us. This does not mean are perfect yet, but we are on a path toward betterment. The more we learn to live God’s way, the better we become. It does not exclude us from the effects of the world’s brokenness either, but we are assured of God’s presence with us in all circumstances and of an eternal future with him.
At GPCC we want to take every means to care for your children, but we cannot guarantee that accidents won’t happen. In this sense we take a realistic view of the world while playing our part in making it a safe place for children. This is good parenting too. We must not of course shield them from every possible hardship as this leads to a weak adult. Wind is necessary to help trees establish their roots deeply and firmly in the soil. Children need to be exposed to challenges to grow their resilience.
Together, we can help make school a place of good growth for children so that they can take their place in the world with confidence.
Principal
Wakakiri – Thank you
Several of our parents have been cutting, gluing and sewing costumes for our performers. Thank you to those who have volunteered to assist in this manner. Our performers have been rehearsing each week and will be involved in a full day rehearsal next week. Please see the schedule for details. Information about how to purchase tickets that have been allocated to our school has been emailed to families.
Communication
It is often necessary for parents and carers to contact the College regarding issues such as early departures, absentees, sickness and lost property. This information is best handled by the College office, who can ensure that messages are read and responded to in a timely manner and passed on to the relevant parties. Teachers are more than happy to respond to emails regarding academic progression or social and emotional interactions and can be emailed using their email address.
Please note the following:
- For absentees, please email absentees@gpcc.nsw.edu.au
- For lost property, to report an issue with buses, to make an enquiry about an excursion details please email office@gpcc.nsw.edu.au or contact reception on 43631266.
- For notification of early departure, or around medication or sickness please email office@gpcc.nsw.edu.au or phone reception on 43631266. For early departure please email or phone well in advance of student's departure if possible.
Parking
GPCC shares our site and parking facilities with three other entities – Little Coasties Kindergarten, Green Point Baptist Church and Yattalunga Valley Christian School. As a result it is important that when attending events, assemblies and visit the College that vehicles are parked so as not to block the access way for others and to allow for the smooth movement of traffic around the site. Please ensure you only park in the designated parking bays at all times as these are the safest places to alight and collect students.
Author in Residence
Next week our Primary students will participate in a writing workshop conducted by our visiting Author in Residence, Dr Cameron Stelzer. Dr Stelzer is the author of the Pie Rats series and novel The Forgotten Map. Information about how to order his books will be sent home following his visit. Thank you to Mrs van Wyk and the library staff for the ways you make reading fun and engaging.
Reconciliation Week
For Reconciliation Week, 2G read “Open your Heart to Country” by Jasmine Seymour. We discussed what Country means and why it is important. In response, students wrote a paragraph describing a place that is special to them.
We learnt that ‘warami mittigar’ is Darug language for ‘hello friend’ and we decorated ‘reconciliation hands’ with dot painting.

Secondary Musical - Camp RockThe Secondary musical is coming up at the end of June. Please see 'Community' section of this newsletter for dates and how to book tickets.
Mr Steve Lobsey | Head of Secondary
I heard someone through the week talk about the process of maturing. They spoke about how when they were young, they thought a lot about whether people liked them. As an adult, they spend more time wondering who they like. I looked into it further and found this idea came from a book called '100 Things Successful People Do: Little Exercises for Successful Living' by Rikkie Gale. She says:
“I used to walk into a room full of people and wonder if they liked me . . . now I look around and wonder if I like them”
I see this playing out at school amongst our students. Adolescents often care so much about what other people think of them and this can create issues. Poor decisions are made because students want to look good in front of their peers. This happens in small ways such as deciding to not wear the uniform correctly because my friends don’t, to moderate silly behaviour to impress others, and to serious bullying behaviour in an attempt to elevate themselves above another.
We see the process of maturity as students feel more comfortable in themselves. They establish an identity separate to what others think of them and make better decisions, particularly in how they treat others.
Of course, being the person walking into the room deciding who I like is not without its own issues. We see adults deciding to associate with people because they can help them in some way and disregarding people they do not decide they like.
It made me wonder what a Christian view of this would be. I think I would add to the quote that since becoming a Christian, I try more to think about “who could I help in this room?”. I want to be part of the room where people are looking to help others, regardless of whether they like or are liked by them.

Come Experience the Wonders of Ancient Egypt
Our Year 7 HSIE students have been hard at work reproducing real-life artefacts from Ancient Egypt. They were able to use many medium (clay, plastic, Lego, paper/cardboard, timber etc) and had to include an exhibition label as if their artefact were being displayed in a museum. Students have done an amazing job in creating accurate and detailed models and this immersive learning experience has certainly deepened their understanding of the past. Well done Year 7.

Experiment Fest 2023
On Tuesday June 13, six senior Science students participated in EXPERIMENT FEST 2023, organised by the University of Newcastle at the Ourimbah campus.
This unique program is designed for HSC students to improve their skills and knowledge using a hands-on approach for selected difficult experiments and concepts. It allows students to use equipment that isn't available at high schools and conduct experiments that directly relate to the HSC syllabus.
Students analysed sodium content in sports drinks by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), synthesised, characterized and decomposed of aspirin.
Students involved: Angelique A, Rosalie S, Mark L, Claire H, Sinaed W and Oliver C

NNSW Regional Futsal Finals
Year 3 and 4 Boys Futsal team
Having won the local tournament three weeks ago, the boys had qualified for the next level of the futsal competition which was held in Maitland on Tuesday.
We knew our opponents would be much stronger than what we had previously faced, but we also knew that we had the skill and determination to do well. Not surprisingly our first match was against Newcastle East where we encountered a tight tussle, eventually losing 4-3.
From here though, the team never looked back. The instructions were to move the ball fast and then run into space and shoot whenever we had a chance. Impressively the boys went on to convincingly win each of their Pool games 8-1 vs Newcastle Grammar, 6-0 vs Charlton, followed by a 4-1 win in the semi against St James Kotara.
These strong results set up a clash with title heavyweights Hillsborough in the Grand Final. Some slick passing, solid defence and amazing shots on goal saw the boys from GPCC go on to win 4-1 as well as claim the title of NNSW champions.
I am super proud of all the boys and for the amazing skill shown to win both futsal tournaments this year. Well done Enzo RC, Tommy B, Jad A, Max F, James C, Nash P and Luke P.
Mr McSwan
Year 5 and 6 Boys Futsal team
The boys had a tough 3 game pool playing St Joseph Merewether, Newcastle Grammar and Bishop Tyrell. The boys fought hard in all 3 games topping the pool with a 1-1 draw to start the day, coming back from 0-1 to win 2-1 in game 2 and a 2-0 win in game 3. Top performers where Hamish L saving multiple goals and Jaxon H working hard on both sides of the ball.
They came up against Wyong Christian in the semi-final. Adam led the way with multiple shots on target and near misses followed by the others keeping constant pressure on the Wyong players. Unfortunately, the ball didn't seem to bounce out way with a last second goal putting Wyong up 2-0.
Mr Sneyd
Year 5 and 6 Girls Futsal team
Well done to the Senior Girls Futsal Team on a great day at the NNSW State Futsal Championships. It was very tough, up against some of the strongest Futsal teams in the Hunter region. The girls played extremely well together, showcasing their quick passes and exceptional defensive skills. They unfortunately could not pull a win, but they learnt some new skills along the way, and it was encouraging to see them give 100% in each game. Congratulations again to the Senior Girls Futsal Team, Phoebe N, Sophie C, Zara L, Lily D, Alleah M, Riley D, Aurora H and Lara B.

Individual Sport Trials for Primary CSSA and CIS Teams
These trials are not for GPCC school teams that we trial here at school to play at certain gala days throughout the year (as mentioned above). The CSSA or CIS trials are usually held in Sydney and students will be trialling against students from either other Christian Schools (CSSA) or other Independent Schools (CIS) and are usually recommended for those students that compete at a representative level.
Please email Mr McSwan before these dates if your child (Years 5 and 6 only) would like to be considered. They need to be currently playing in the sport and have several years’ experience (preferably at a Representative level): Parents are required to transport students to and from these trials.

THACCCSA Zone Girls Basketball
Junior Girls Basketball Team
On Wednesday the Junior Girls Basketball team competed in Division 1 in the THACCCSA Basketball Gala Day. The team comprised of Elouise A, Isabella E, Bonnie H, Inda H, Bronte M, Ariella N, Cally T, Zoe W. Thanks also to Scarlett S who came along to support the team even though she was on crutches. The girls played well all day and had some hard-fought matches. They won two out of three games making it to the semi-final. In the semi-final they played a tough match against Carinya going on to win and make it to the final. In the final, they came up against a well-drilled Maitland team who had beaten us convincingly in the preliminary match. However, in the final, the girls fought hard and were only one point behind at half-time. We stayed with them for the start of the second half, but they managed to get a few easy baskets before pulling away to beat us. Overall, the girls had a good day and represented their school with great attitudes.

THACCCSA Boys Futsal
U15's Team
The sun began to rise as our teams, the mighty U15s and embarked on an epic journey to the THACCCSA Zone Futsal Championship in Maitland. With a fierce determination burning in our hearts, we left the comfort of our homes at the break of dawn, eager to conquer the challenges that awaited us on the futsal court.
Setting off from GPCC, our spirits soared high as we travelled towards Maitland. The air buzzed with excitement and anticipation, knowing that this day would test our skills, resilience, and teamwork like never before.
In our first encounter, we faced Belmont, a formidable opponent. But our unity and determination prevailed, leading us to a resounding 5-0 victory. The stage was set for an extraordinary journey.
Next, we clashed with Charlton, showcasing our skill and teamwork. The crowd was mesmerized as we secured a remarkable 7-3 win, leaving no doubt about our capabilities.
Our hunger for victory intensified as we faced Mid Coast. The futsal court became a spectacle of brilliance, with us dominating the game in both attacking and defensive presence with Hunter M, Tyson S and Ben S getting in on the action and lead us to triumph with an astounding 10-1 score.
In a nail-biting battle against Maitland in our fourth fixture, our unyielding spirit shone through. With the scores level and 2-2, up stepped Kade C to rival one past the Maitland keeper to secure the victory and send us through to the Grand Final as the only undefeated team.
Entering the Grand Final, destiny awaited us. Facing Maitland once again, our hearts raced. With every touch of the ball, we unleashed brilliance. Kaden L stepped up to deliver a hattrick in the final, with Harry I and Zaid A G both contributing to the scoresheet. The crowd erupted in thunderous applause as we celebrated a momentous 7-2 victory, becoming the crowned champions.
MVP – Charlie M
Coach – Mr Partridge
Open Boys Team
Our Opens Boys started off against the tough opponents from Belmont and narrowly lost a tight game. In their second game, the boys started to find successful channels and plays that caught out their opposition and squeezed out a 4-4 draw against Carinya Tamworth. With energy high, moving into their third game, the boys stood up against Charlton in a nail-biter but came up just short in a 2-1 loss. With finals out of contention, the boys highlight of the day was against their friends from Wyong. The friendly rivalries between both teams were strong, but Green Point won convincingly.
Author in Residence – Dr Cameron Stelzer, The Story Doctor
On Wednesday 21 June - Friday 23 June, we have a special visit from Author and Illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer.
