Students: The formation of students who display the attributes of the GPCC Graduate Profile.
In our mission Green Point Christian College seek the formation of students who display the attributes of the Graduate Profile. Before we look to unpack the Graduate Profile in coming weeks, I think it is important to first openly reflect on how we view students here at Green Point.
The educationalist Parker Palmer says, “The way we diagnose a students’ condition will determine the kind of remedy we offer.” The image any educator uses to imagine our students has a large impact on how we approach teaching them. For example, if we view them as static vessels, we will seek to “fill” them with knowledge.
Here at Green Point we intentionally speak about forming students. The images that are associated with this idea of formation are numerous and rich. Clay is formed by the craftsman and a vine is formed along the trellis in the vineyard. Both images speak to a creative and collaborative process where students bring something to the practice of learning. Students have agency and an invitation to engage, they are not simply recipients of a process but they also contribute to it.
Our faith also informs how we view our students. We firmly believe that each of us, being made in the image of God (Imago Dei), invited to be His people, and are holy and dearly loved. Our students are also human – just like us; born into this sinful world and are impacted by it just like we are.
In addition to being cherished and beloved children of God, there are three things that we believe are also helpful to remember about our students, and ourselves, as we seek to learn and navigate in this world.
Our students are Human (Imago Dei) – This is the most important thing and is the part that will outlast all others. Our students are human, created in the image of God and respected accordingly. God saw His creation and called it very good. That deep and beautiful pronouncement from God continues from generation to generation and is at the heart of the way we see our students.
Our students are Broken, (unconsciously impacted by the Fall) – just like this world is. We are all unconsciously impacted by the Fall, the world is not as it should be. Sin is pervasive. We see it across all spheres of life. It affects us all. We cannot reach perfection, we make mistakes, we break and use things, we miss the mark all the time. It is not reasonable to expect perfection of our students and each other in a broken world.
Our students are Fallen (consciously sinful) – when we as parents first lay our eyes on our beautiful newborns, we are wired to see their perfection. So often the experience of awe and overwhelming love overtakes us. As these beautiful babies grow, we realise that they are not perfection, indeed they can often be the exact opposite of that! This doesn’t change our overwhelming love, but it is critical to accurately recognise so we can love, guide and discipline them well through their mistakes. The Bible acknowledges that in the agency we have been given by God we are all not simply unconsciously impacted by the Fall (Broken) but we are also consciously sinful (Fallen). We recognise this for our students as well, not because we sit in judgement (we’re all fallen after all) but because accurately recognising this allows us as a community to love, guide and discipline one another well. As Parker Palmer says: “The way we diagnose a students’ condition will determine the kind of remedy we offer.”
Here at GPCC we believe that the ultimate remedy is found in the saving work of Jesus that we read about in the Gospels. The work of Jesus reaches into every part of His creation as he seeks to redeem all things, including our students and their learning back to himself.

Primary celebrated Clean Up Australia Day on Friday 1 March. During this event each Primary class K-6, cleaned up an area of our school community.
We believe this activity will inspire our students to learn about the impact of rubbish on their local environment while playing an active role in their community. Students and teachers worked together to clean up an area which is special to them, part of the playground, surrounding bush area, canteen area and our oval. Students learned about waste, how it impacts our environment, and worked together to organise a Clean Up event.
Band Director visits Primary students
On Friday 23 February, I had the pleasure of inviting Year 3 and 4 students to join our Welcome Band program. I was helped by two of our fabulous Junior Band students Jamie and Caleb, who did a great job showing us the sounds of trumpet and trombone, whilst I demonstrated flute clarinet and saxophone. Welcome Band introduces students with zero experience to a band instrument of their choice including percussion, keyboard, bass and guitar as well as those above, subject to availability.
Students in our band program learn teamwork, foundations of reading music as well as giving several concerts throughout the year. Not to mention the cognitive development that comes with learning music, as well as resilience, self-discipline and confidence.
I look forward to another brilliant year of band at GPCC, and big new cohort of Welcome Band applicants. For more information please visit our website.

Sibling Photo morning is on Friday 8 March: Please place your order by Friday 1 March.
This year STEM students would like to design, create, test and build from PVC Pipes. If you have leftover PVC piping from building or plumbing jobs, GPCC Primary would love to collect these and use to build engineering challenges. Pipes need to be clean . Lengths can be cut down. We also need any connectors Y,T,I, or L shapes to join the lengths of pipes.
Families can bring to school and leave in the STEM room - L11 (the old L1 room) or students may bring to school and leave in the plastic tubs located outside L11.
We would really appreciate the chance to recycle these offcuts. Please email Mrs Reynolds with any inquiries CReynolds@gpcc.nsw.edu.au

On Thursday of last week, 36 amazing swimmers from GPCC Primary competed at the THACCCSA Primary Zone Swimming Carnival at The Forum pool in Newcastle.
Our team performed very well finishing 3rd overall behind Belmont Christian College and Wyong Christian School. Due to our strong performances, we had some well-deserved Age Champion and Place Getters who were awarded medals following the carnival. Well done to all the boys and girls for wonderful swimming and cheering throughout the day. I’d also like to thank all parents that attended the event.

Avoca Beach U6 Junior Rugby (GPCC)
Dear Kindy Parents
We have an exciting opportunity to pilot an Avoca Beach Junior Rugby U6 team, playing under the umbrella of GPCC. If you and your child would like to build some great, lasting relationships in the 2024 kindy year, this is a great way to do it.
The idea is to get around 10 boys and girls to form a team to compete in the local junior rugby competition on Saturday mornings. If we get the numbers, we intend to train straight after school on the GPCC oval on a Wednesday until 4pm.
Our coach will be Mitchell Ryan in Year 9. Mitch has played representative rugby for the Central Coast for the past three years and was chosen in the U14 NSW Country Team in 2023. Mitch will be supported by coaches from the Avoca Beach Club (and his dad, Dave).
The Avoca Beach Junior Rugby Club is a really inclusive, fun and active club that supports kids through their junior sporting careers. The kids and parents also get to form great friendships that carry on into later years.
If you have a child that was born in 2018 and you would like to join an awesome footy club, please register your interest through the below link and the club will be in touch. EOI Schools Program 2024
Expressions of interest for CSSA and HZSA Duathlon/Triathlon
This is an event for those in Years 3-6. Please see the information below. Parents will be required to coordinate a team of students to participate in their age group prior to contacting Mr McSwan.
Parents will also be required to transport their child and gear (bike) to and from the event.
Please let Mr McSwan know via email smcswan@gpcc.nsw.edu.au if you would like to enter a team, which event they will be competing in and which leg each competitor will be completing by Friday 22 March.

GPCC Sport Teams
We are looking forward to sending our teams to a number of Gala Days and competitions in Primary this year.
Students will have a chance to trial for certain school teams over the coming terms and will need to keep a close eye on the notices and listen out for Assembly announcements for when trials will be held.
The protocol for team selection is as follows:
- Teams have at least 2-3 trials before final selection.
- Unfortunately, it is simply not possible for all children who trial to be included in final teams. It is not uncommon for 60 students to trial for a team that only has 10 spots available.
- Once teams have been chosen, they will aim to have at least one training session each week before a competition.
Individual Sport Trials for Primary CSSA and CIS Teams (NOT GPCC teams)
These trials are not for GPCC school teams that we trial for here at school to play at certain gala days throughout the year (as mentioned above). The CSSA or CIS trials are usually held in Sydney and students will be trialling against students from either other Christian Schools (CSSA) or other Independent Schools (CIS) and are usually recommended for those students that compete at a representative level.
Please email Mr McSwan before these Nomination dates if your child (YEARS 5 AND 6 ONLY) would like to be considered. They need to be currently playing in the sport and have several years’ experience (preferably at a Representative level): Parents are required to transport students to and from these trials.
CSSA and CIS Sport trial dates: Please note these are not for GPCC school teams.

Primary and Secondary Debating Workshops
On Monday 26 February, 22 students from Years 5-8 attended seminars and debating workshops at Wyong Christian Community School with Mrs Lines and Mr Samild.
The guest presenter was Tristan Simpson, from Masters Academy, which is NSW leading provider of in-school communication education.
The students learned about the differences between arguments and debates, the 3 Ms of debating (Manner, Method, Matter), the process and roles in a debate, plus skills for providing rebuttal.
Poppy A, Elsie H and Zoey A demonstrated great skills during the Umm Game, where they were required to talk about themselves for 1 minute without using the word ‘umm’.
We look forward to providing more opportunities for students of GPCC to develop their debating skills in the coming months.
NAPLAN 2024 Parent and Carer Information
Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar, and punctuation) and numeracy.
NAPLAN 2024 will take place from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March. The schedule of testing will be sent at the beginning of March. Secondary students please note that the Secondary Athletics Carnival is on Thursday 14 March.
NAPLAN is just one part of our school learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school.
In preparation for NAPLAN, our school will undertake activities to help students become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests. These activities are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not required nor recommended.
The public demonstration site https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site is available to see the types of questions, tools and functions used in the NAPLAN tests.
Further information about NAPLAN is available on the NESA website (https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/k-10/understanding-the-curriculum/naplan/parent-information).
