We have successfully reached the end of another term this week. Like many others, I am not sure we can speak of a "new normal" yet as we are really in a holding pattern while we wait to see what will happen next.
All credit to the students and staff who have persevered and made it through the term. It has taken, and is taking, its toll but with the right attitude, strength comes from such challenges. Our role as staff and parents is to help the children in our care, know how to do that well.
This week we see the Year 12 students graduating. Disappointingly, family members will not be there to see them but we are live streaming it so that they can at least see what their son or daughter is going through. We will be making an edited video of the event as a keepsake for them as well.
Our school motto is "Equipped for Life" and our challenge has been to see how we can help our students be better equipped for the future through this experience. As parents, you also need to work with them to help them see how they can learn life lessons through these experiences. Too often our culture teaches them to be victims, but we want them to be overcomers.
The Christian view of the world is a realistic one. We live on an amazing planet seemingly designed perfectly for human, plant and animal life. Yet we recognise that there are faults in this world and in us that get in the way of the potential of this planet being fulfilled. Christians, through the words of the Bible, learn that because of a bad decision made early on in humanities existence, brokenness and disobedience entered the world and we still suffer the consequences of that. There is a rift between the Creator and the creation.
But the Creator did not give up on His creation. He has been working out a plan of restoration and reconciliation and offering us the opportunity to be restored and to assist Him in the process of restoration. Ultimately, the final chapter of the Bible story speaks of a total restoration when everything will be put right.
This gives us hope to persevere when things get tough. We are reminded that the future of the world is not in our hands but in His, and while we must bear responsibility for our mistakes, one day it will be okay. We do need to submit ourselves to His authority, admit we have done wrong and accept that we cannot put things right ourselves, only He can. But when we do that, we are released from a burden we cannot bear and find strength to do what He calls us and to experience something of the final restoration.
GPCC tells this story to its students and invites them to consider joining in this great hope-filled adventure of learning to be fully human and engaging in the purpose for which they were made. Our task as a school is to equip them for this work and to help them to grow in character into the people God wants them to be.
Even in the midst of the pandemic we do not lose sight of this exciting opportunity. I trust that as you enjoy the term break, remember that we are partners together in giving our students this hope.

An End to Term 3
Once again, Term 3 has been like most of 2020 and caused us to think and rearrange what we have become so familiar with.
As I think back on all that we have achieved this term, I am super proud of the resilience and adaptability of our students.
Book Week – with a virtual parade and loads of amazing literacy activities, incursions, trips to the Secondary School and visits from specialist teachers running workshops, Chapel and Assemblies each week over video, and an in-house Athletics Carnival for both Infants and Primary.
As we have grown used to a slower pace, let us ensure that our lives do not become overcrowded and busy just for the sake of achieving more.
Summer Uniform
Uniform is an important part of demonstrating that we belong together and represents who we are as a College. Thank you for partnering with us as we teach our students the importance of respecting these uniform guidelines.
As the weather warms up, please ensure all students have a hat with them each day for sun protection. Students are now permitted to wear their summer uniform if they would like to, as this week is the second week of a changeover period. Summer uniforms will be compulsory from the start of Term 4.
Black socks are not part of our formal or sports uniform and should not be worn to school. White socks are worn with the girls' uniform and sports uniform and boys are to wear grey socks.
Hats at School
It is now compulsory for Primary students to wear their hats at recess, lunchtime and whenever outside during sport or play. Please take time with your children to find and re-label their sun hats.

Car Park
At GPCC, safety is always a priority. One of the main risk factors at our College is the amount of cars and students at pick up in the afternoons. For this reason, we have commenced a road safety campaign. We are asking parents to support us in demonstrating good duty of care by following our car park and pick up guidelines:
- Primary students should not walk across the car park without an accompanying adult.
- Primary students should only be picked up from the Kiss and Drop or the bottom of the hill and are not allowed to walk to Beaties Road or 7/11 to meet parents/carers.
- Students waiting at the Kiss and Drop need to be seated and observantly waiting to be picked up.
- Students must follow the direction of teachers and grounds staff in relation to crossings and movement in the pick up areas.
Fruit and Vege Mufti!
This Friday students in Primary will be allowed to wear brightly coloured clothes to celebrate the end of Fruit and Vege Month.
We are encouraging all students to choose clothes in the same colour as their favourite fruit or vegetable (eg Blue for blueberries, green for snow peas) and bring that fruit or vegetable with them on Friday for crunch n sip.
There is no donation needed for this event.
Fruit & Veg Month 2020
Reduce fruit and vegetable waste
GPCC is participating in Fruit & Veg Month 2020. This year’s theme is "Planet Fruit & Veg", because eating more fruit and veg is good for us and the planet. As part of Fruit & Veg Month we have been sending home information each week on how to "up the fruit and veg" at your place – for yourselves and the planet.
Did you know that NSW households waste 1/3 of the fresh food (such as fruit and vegetables) they buy? Not only does this waste money it also wastes all the resources it took to grow and produce that food. And rotting food in landfill produces greenhouses gases. This resource has helpful hints on how to reduce fruit and vegetable waste, save money and help the planet.
If you require more information on what activities our school is doing for Fruit & Veg Month, please contact Mrs Munro, kmunro@gpcc.nsw.edu.au or your child’s teacher.
Primary Athletics Carnival - Stage 2 and Stage 3
Our Primary Athletics Carnivals for Years 3 and 4, and Years 5 and 6 was a HUGE success.
The sun was shining as our energetic Primary students headed for the oval to participate in an array of field events, including shot put, high jump and short sprints.
See the Sport section for more news.

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary
This is the final week of Term 3. This means that this is the final week for our Year 12 and it is always tainted with joy and sadness. It is a time that marks the end of an era of school education; for many, 13 years here at Green Point Christian College, and the beginning of a new era of future direction. We will miss each and every student in Year 12 and wish them every blessing for the future. I encourage each of you to seek truth and I know there is only one place that will lead you to that truth … Jesus Christ, at the foot of the Cross.

Year 11 New Drivers
Many Year 11 students are obtaining their licences which opens up all new possibilities. However, before they start driving to school, they need to fill in their 2020 Student Driver Permission Form which they can obtain from Mr Lewis.
Please have a word to your Year 11 child indicating to them that there is an expectation that having a licence does not give them freedom to come and go during school time. They must be present in all their classes.
Year 11 Yearly Exams until 22 September 2020
Year 11 Yearly Exams are from 14 - 22 September. Year 11 students are only required to come to school on the day that they have an exam and must be dressed in their formal school uniform. Please note that all Year 11 students return to normal classes from Wednesday 23 September until the end of Term 3.
Year 7 Japanese Students Make YAKISOBA
In Year 7 Japanese class, students have been learning about Japanese foods in their unit of work, “Eating Out, Going Out”. Last Friday, all Year 7 Japanese students were able to participate in an authentic cooking experience of Japanese stir fry noodles, also known as "Yakisoba". The students were taught the names of the ingredients in Japanese and were delegated roles in the cooking process, including adding the ingredients and mixing them together on the barbecue. All students were able to participate in cooking for themselves and their classmates, and select students volunteered to serve their peers this delicious meal at the end of the lesson. As you can see in the pictures, there are some budding Iron Chefs in the Year 7 cohort! Mr Wheeler, and Miss Tooby (ex-student currently on practicum at GPCC) were so proud of the way students cooked, and conducted themselves.
If you would like to participate in some Japanese cooking at home, the recipe has been attached below. It is sure to be a fun experience for the whole family.
やきそば Yakisoba - JAPANESE STYLE BBQ NOODLES GPCC STYLE
(serves 4-6 people)
You will need the following ingredients:
4 packets Hokkien noodles (or substitute with spaghetti)
500g Carrots
1 small Cabbage (or half large one)
1 bunch shallots
500g protein of your choice, sliced thinly (pork, beef, mince, chicken, tofu etc)
300g diced bacon
Liberal amounts of sauce to taste (make sauce by mixing 1L BBQ sauce, 1L tomato sauce, 250ml soy sauce, 250ml Worcestershire sauce – this will last you quite a while – it will be easy to make yakisoba whenever you want).
Once all your ingredients are ready, stir fry the meat and vegies in some canola oil on the BBQ or in a frypan, add the noodles, stir through sauce, and serve on a plate or bowl. Use as a main dish or as a side dish.
Don’t forget to say "tadakimasu" before you start eating and "gochisousama deshita" when you’ve finished.

Past Student - Daniel Webber (Actor) Returns to GPCC
Daniel Webber (Year 12, 2006) returned to GPCC to chat with students (potential thespians) about getting into the acting industry.
Daniel is known for his roles in The Dirt (Vince Neill), Close (Pvt Paul Large) and “11, 22, 63” (Lee Harvey Oswald). COVID has brought him back to Oz for the time being. We are so grateful he has been able to share his vast experience with our up and coming actors.

Year 10 Food Technology
In Week 7, Year 10 Food Technology commenced the process of making Camembert cheese. The maturation process takes about six weeks and in the first two weeks the cheese must be turned daily to develop the traditional white mould crust. After this, the cheese is wrapped and allowed to mature for another four weeks. Students are learning that some of foods we eat take time to reach perfection.

PRIMARY ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
It was different scenery to our usual Athletics Carnivals, held at the Mingara Athletics Track. This year we needed to hold the Primary Athletics Carnival at school which was a great day. Although it was quite warm, the children were amazing and there were some sensational results posted throughout the day.
Some of the highlights were:
- Katie E, who already holds some records, broke both the 11yrs Girls Discus (throwing a mammoth 19.32m, beating the old record by over 2m) and 11yrs Girls Shot Put records (where she threw a huge 9.46m, which again destroyed the previous record by 2m)
- Kyne B, who, like Katie, has represented our school at CSSA and CIS levels for Athletics, also broke the 12yrs Boys Discus record with a whopping throw of 33.20m. This broke a 22yr old record by over 5m. That is an impressive effort! He now holds a clean sweep of the Boys records in Discus, currently holding the Junior, 11yrs and now 12yrs records
- Benjamin T, who is getting faster every year in both Swimming and Athletics, now holds the 11yrs Boys High Jump record, clearing an amazing 1.35m
There were many wonderful moments where students stood back to encourage and cheer one another on (especially several times as kids were trying to clear a challenging height in high jump). Also, seeing students stop running a race to help someone else who had fallen over, really shows the great sportsmanship that we have at our school.
Our House Captains played a big role in helping run the Infants Athletics Carnival last week. They were willing to help out at this carnival, assisting in the morning session for the Years 3 and 4, measuring throws, raking the long jump pit, etc. This was a tiring job, doing this for 3 hours in the sun. To show how amazing our House Leaders are, they then backed up by competing themselves in their own events in the afternoon session. They are a phenomenal bunch of students whom I greatly appreciate.
Thank you also to our wonderful staff who assisted throughout the day, running each event and recording results. It was a great day and one that provided our school with the opportunity to come together and celebrate sport in both a fun and competitive way.
