One of the growing challenges facing our society today is the increase in bullying. It is possible that it is fuelled in part by the use of social media, because it allows hurtful comments to be made to or about someone without having to eyeball the person. I think it is also fuelled by the drift of our culture away from its historic Judeo-Christian ethic, which called on us all to treat each other with dignity and respect because we are all made in the image of God.
All schools have to deal with incidents of bullying amongst students, and GPCC is no exception. So, the question might be, why is it that increasingly younger students are engaging in bullying behaviour towards others? They may not have direct access to social media platforms, and, in GPCC’s context, they come from families who, on enrolment, all express a commitment to a traditional Judeo-Christian ethic and values.
As we seek to deal with bullying incidents at school, we ask ourselves this question often – where is this coming from? None of us would endorse any form of bullying as appropriate, yet our children are engaging in it. It is easy for us to blame you the parents – it is up to you to bring your children up "properly" and teach them not to bully. But we know that this is too simplistic. Even in families that appear to be doing everything right, sometimes a child will bully another.
Societies are complex and as communication has improved and increased, and our children are exposed to social media and other media forms, they do imbibe the general cultural trends – good and bad. We cannot shield them totally from these influences. As a school we don’t really want to do that either – we want to teach them to stand against such behaviour and live rightly – extending respect and kindness to all.
Bullying is also part of the natural development of children as they learn that they can have power over others. This power can be used for good or evil and in experimenting with it, it is often used poorly – hence the bullying. Our goal is to help our children to learn to use the power over others for good.
As a school, dealing with bullying is one of our most difficult tasks. Bullying situations are often complex and getting to the truth of exactly what happened is not easy. We are committed to having a safe and caring environment for all students and need your support and forbearance as we seek to deal with bullying behaviour. Our desire is always for the bully to reform and in most cases, we can achieve this. However, sometimes this is not possible when a student is unwilling to change their behaviour and, in those cases, we take the difficult decision to terminate their enrolment at the College.
Dealing with bullying cases requires forbearance on the part of both school and home. None of us want to be told we have a child who is bullying, but facing up to the possibility and working it through can be a significant developmental moment in a child’s life that sets them up for a much better and stronger future.
This is how we can work to equip them for a life in which they contribute to a better society.

Year 6 CRU Camp
Last week 70+ students in Year 6 headed off to CRU Camp Lake Macquarie for a three day away from home experience. Students participated in raft building, sailing, rock climbing and archery, many for the first time. Through team building activities they learnt to work together and rely on each other for support. Across the three days students also heard about how God can be the navigator of their lives with many accepting Jesus into their lives or recommitting their lives to follow Him. We are so thankful for this opportunity and to the teachers who accompanied them - Mrs MacLeod, Mr Turner, Mr Smith, Mrs Munro and Mrs Brown.

School Surf Safety Days
As part of the PDHPE curriculum, students are required to learn about safety in a variety of contexts. Here on the coast there is no better place to do that than on the beach. Students in Years 3-6 will each be participating in a Surf Safety day at Terrigal beach. Notes have been sent home and students are excited about developing these important skills.
Surf Day Terrigal Beach:
Monday – Year 6
Tuesday – Year 3
Wednesday – Year 5
Thursday - Year 4
Students will need to be at school at the normal time and will be back by 3:00pm for afternoon buses.
Kindergarten 2021- Get Set Go!
Our Kindergarten 2021 Get Set Go Orientation Days begin next week. Students who will be starting in Kindergarten will meet near the Kindergarten rooms at 9:00am. Unfortunately, parents are not able to remain on site. Further information regarding the Orientation days has been emailed to parents.
Musica Viva
On Tuesday this week students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will participate in a virtual music incursion with a concert from “Little Big Band” Adam Hall and the Velvet Players. Students have been learning about the elements of a brass band and the rhythm and blues genre of music. Even though the artists will be on a big screen, students will still be able to interact and get involved in the performance.
Head of School Awards
Congratulations to the following students who achieved the Head of School Award for Week 3, Term 4:
Charlotte M, KDL; Charlotte H, KP; Cruz H, 1G; Nash P, 1PH; Finlay W, 2G; Willow H, 2J; Luke L, 3B; Nylla P, 3K; Bonita C, 4B; Zoe C, 4M; Bronte B, 5D; Lilly B, 5H and Levi M, 5P.
Punctuality
Arriving to school on time is not only a great in establishing habits of good time management and organisation, it also assists students to feel settled and be ready for the day. Please be mindful that Primary School begins at 8:55am and students need to be on site well before then to ensure they have unpacked and are ready for the day.
Christmas Card Competition

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary
We are again focused on the way in which we treat those around us. We want our students to be learning to see the value of others no matter who they are or in whose friendship group they belong. God sees each of us as of highest value which resulted in the ultimate sacrifice. How can any of us lessen the value of another by demeaning or insulting them. Rather we want our students to enjoy anyone whom they interact with in any situation.
Secondary Athletics Carnival
Date: Friday 6 November 2020.
Venue: Mingara Athletics Track, Mingara Drive, Tumbi Umbi.
Time: Commencing at 8:45am and concluding at 2:00pm.
What to bring: House colours, recess, lunch, sports uniform, sunscreen and water. A canteen will be available for students.

If your child requires bus transport you will need to log into your Parent Lounge and in “Tours and Excursions” tick the bus transport options.
This is a compulsory Secondary School event, so all students are required to be in attendance. If your child is unable to attend, please contact the College office on the Absentee Line (4367 9950).
Parents will not be permitted to attend this event due to restrictions on numbers at Mingara.

“It’s in the Bag”
During November the College will be participating in “It’s in the Bag”, an initiative from Share the Dignity organisation. This initiative aims to provide hygiene and toiletry essentials for women in need in our community.
Throughout the month we will be collecting toiletry essentials for teens, mums and bubs and women in need (see flyer for suggestions). If you would like to participate, you may choose to provide individual items from the list, or place items in a new or pre-loved handbag or backpack. You may want to donate as an individual, as a family, as a church, as a class or Year group. Collection boxes are located in the Administration Office.

Spotlight on Year 7
In the first week of this term, Lochlan R (Year 7) starred in a short film, “December 1940” which was shot in Sydney. I believe it even “snowed” in Surry Hills.
This film will be entered in some of the coming year’s global film festivals. Congratulations Lochlan – we look forward to seeing where this might take you in the future.

Year 9 Food Technology

Year 9 Food Technology are currently studying Food Equity and learning about the range of causes of food inequity. This week they made Inequitable Pancakes. They had to pick their allowable toppings from a hat and then evaluate their emotions when they read the toppings they were or were not allowed to use. Some were so sad that others had missed out on the decadent toppings, they wanted to share their wealth with them.
Year 10 Science
Mr Drennan’s Year 10 Science class had a Zoom conference with past student Shannon Bowler who is an undergraduate at Macquarie University studying Ecology. Shannon presented a lecture on her current study of the effects of artificial light on animal behaviour.
Student Opal Cards
From January 2021 onwards, there will be a number of School Opal cards expiring, as the physical card has reached its lifespan.
These are cards for students who will be in Years 8 to 12 in 2021, and only those Opal cards which have not been replaced in the last five years.
Impacted students and/or their parent/carer will be contacted directly by Transport for NSW via email or post. They will be asked to confirm their details online in order for a new School Opal card to be sent to the correct postal address in time for the new school year.
If contacted by Transport for NSW, details should be submitted online by 1 December 2020 at the latest. Affected students who do not confirm their details in time will have a new School Opal card posted to the address Transport NSW has on file.

SECONDARY ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
It is with great pleasure to inform you that we will be holding our Secondary Athletics Carnival this term at Mingara for Years 7-11 students. It will be held on this Friday 6 November. As this is our first Secondary sport event for over two terms, it will be one in which I expect all students to be heavily involved, participating in as many events and scoring as many points as possible for their House.
The carnival will begin at 8:45am and conclude by 2:00pm. Students are expected to arrive by 8:30am. There will be buses provided for those students requiring transport. These will leave the College at 8:45am and return by 3:00pm (note that students on the bus will miss the 800m event). Parents will need to indicate via Parent Lounge if their child requires transport on the Bus.
This is a compulsory event so all students are expected to be in attendance at the carnival. On arrival, they will need to have their names marked off and repeat this as they leave at the end of the day after the Relays.
Parents will be able to drop off/pick up their child from the venue, as due to restrictions on numbers parents will not be permitted to attend.
Students will need to bring their own recess and lunch, and wear their House shirts. The canteen will be open to purchase food or drinks (all sold individually wrapped).
