By the time you read this, we will have information on the Government’s return to school plan. I will email out details regarding GPCC’s response to that separately.
This week I want to share some good news amid the pandemic gloom. On Thursday last week, we received notice that our application for permission to operate a Special School on site at the College, has been approved! Yattalunga Valley Christian School (YVCS) will open in January 2022 with, we hope, 9 or more students in Kindergarten to Year 2. The school will grow each year thereafter in accordance with demand for places.
YVCS will operate as a separate legal entity under the school company, Green Point Christian College Ltd, and be governed by the GPCC Ltd Directors. Government regulation allows a charitable company established to operate schools to run more than one entity under the company. YVCS will however be separately funded through school fees and Government funds as GPCC is now. No money will go from GPCC to YVCS except for some start-up funds which will be repaid by YVCS once it is operating.
We had planned to open YVCS in the house the College owns next to the Service Station, but that property sits within a bushfire zone, and we are not permitted to use it for a school. Instead, we are leasing some space in the topmost Primary classroom block from GPCC. As the school grows, we plan to build a permanent facility for it on part of the GPCC land in accordance with our Master Plan.
Yattalunga Valley Christian School is being established to support children who are on the Autism Spectrum. Some children with autism can manage in the mainstream classroom with support, but for others it is too over-whelming an experience and they need a smaller and more managed environment to help them develop. It is our hope that by providing the specialist support needed, many of these children will be able to join the mainstream school at some stage.
I have invited Mrs Nicole Smith our Head of Primary, to oversee the school and we will be making some adjustments to Primary staffing to release her for a day a week to do this. This time will be paid for by YVCS. We will also be employing specialist teachers and teacher aides to work in the school. I will be the Executive Principal as this school joins GPCC as a member of the Melos Foundation group. Other GPCC staff will assist with administration, and these costs will also be recovered from YVCS.
We will be advertising for students this week and if you are aware of any families who may be interested in exploring this opportunity, please direct them to our Registrar, Mrs Angela Sheather who will be able to help them see if this is an option for their child. Our move to establish the school has been prompted by numerous enquiries over the past few years from families looking for a suitable place to meet their child’s unique needs.
Pray with us for quality staff, positive enrolments and that this school will be a blessing to those who need extra love and care.

Fruit and Veg Month
We will be participating in Fruit & Veg Month 2021. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Festival Fruit & Veg!’
The United Nations has declared 2021 as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables. This year the world will be celebrating the amazing contribution that fruits and vegetables make to our health – and our school is going to join the party!
Fruit & Veg Month 2021 runs from Monday 30 August to Friday 17 September.
As part of Fruit & Veg Month, students will be involved in various home learning activities which encourage them to eat more fruit and vegetables.
We will be having a virtual fruit/vege break together online in our morning meetings. We also encourage children to create their very own fruit and vegetable sculpture and ask students to send in photos to share.

Nathan Lambert | K-12 Sport Co-ordinator
We have been looking at some of the amazing moments in our school’s history that not just shows a wonderful performance by our students, but also their dedication and perseverance to each other.
Here is another memory that is extremely inspiration by what they accomplished ...
In 2019, we had two teams compete in the CSSA State Primary Mixed Oz Tag Competition. We had one team in the Years 3 and 4 division and one in Years 5 and 6. This was a big competition for our teams who had recently competed at the Central Coast Oz Tag competition and both reached the Semi Finals.
Our Junior Mixed team was made from talented players with individual great skills. They had trained hard over the past few weeks to refine these and also accommodate the logistics of mixed Oztag. Mainly, boys were ball players, girls filled in the link and wing positions and they all worked hard in a defensive line.
The team progressed through Pool games easily, then played Semi Finals against Inaburra and won to proceed to the Grand Final against William Carey CS.
Congratulations to this terrific team who were victorious in defeating William Carey 8-2 in this game. A close and exciting game. Well done to fast legs, tight defence, forward thinking, great passing, good ball play, and the tremendous effort to persevere on a very hot day! CSSA State Junior Oz Tag Champions!
Our Senior Mixed team also had been chosen for specific positions, whether it was as dummy half, 1st or 2nd receiver, wing, tagger, etc. This team was very experienced and with their training sessions and had developed into a tight outfit with a lot of skill and talent.
Their first game was against Mamre B Team, which was important that our team started strongly. They won this game 15-1 and moved into Game 2 against Wycliffe CS with their confidence building. This game proved to be another display of great skill and teamwork, winning convincingly 14-0. Their final pool match was strongly yet again, with solid defence and accurate passing, winning against St Hurmizd 14-0. They had qualified for the Semi Finals against Toongabbie. Our Senior team were just too experienced however, and won the game 5-4, progressing to the Grand Final.
Mamre A Team would be their opponents and our team were hungry for victory. They had been the dominant team all day and wanted to finish the competition undefeated and taking home the trophy. This passion, this drive, from our Senior team was what made them play their best game of the day. Their defence was amazing, diving for tags in all directions. Their passing was precise, creating scoring opportunities on many occasions. Their teamwork is what gave them the advantage and they took it with both hands, taking an early lead through one of the best diving defensive tags I have seen by Kyne. With that handover, we ran with the ball, made a break and Jess scored in the corner (2 points when a girl scores). This roll continued and we scored again, taking a 4-0 lead. Mamre bounced back with their own try but Green Point was too passionate to let this one go, scoring again on numerous occasions, eventually winning the Grand Final 9-4. They were now CSSA State Senior Oz Tag Champions!
Finally, watching both teams play really demonstrated how Green Point play the game … we play with passion, we play with determination and we play as a team. These Mixed Oz Tag teams would not have performed as well as they did if they didn’t work together as one. Their encouragement of one another, sportsmanship throughout the day and team spirit is why they accomplished so much. They, like so many other teams representing our school, play together as a team and do it with pride.
This is truly one inspirational story from our past that just demonstrates our passion for sport and desire to play hard as a team.
