As part of our new focus as a school, we have developed a graduate profile. This is a picture of what we want our students to be like after spending time with us. We do not necessarily expect they will fit the profile perfectly, but that they are well on the way to becoming like this and be recognised as having these characteristics. The first is Godly character.
Human beings are made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26 – 27) and so are most complete when we reflect His characteristics. There is some discussion about what being made in God’s image might actually mean, but theologians often think of it in two ways: firstly, we are, in essence, like God – we can reason, have personality, free will and self-consciousness; and secondly, we function like God, in that we rule over the Creation even while being under God’s rule. We are not divine, but we do reflect what God is like to other human beings. This image or likeness is not just contained in each individual, but rather God’s image is reflected throughout humanity, and His work is to be undertaken by humanity as a whole.
Godly character is our goal, although it will take a lifetime and beyond to achieve it. It consists of those qualities that represent the goodness and perfection of God Himself: love, joy in all things, being at peace and peace-making, patience in all circumstances and with others, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). To this list we may also add qualities such as humility, purity, modesty, integrity, contentment, diligence and so on.
While we often talk about "good" character, we at GPCC want to go further than the usual definition of what a good character might be like and re-connect back to the Creator’s perspective. In God’s Word, the Bible tells us that no human being is good and that even our apparent goodness (our righteousness) is like filthy rags to a holy and perfectly good God (Isaiah 64:6, Romans 3:23). This is the problem of the human condition – we are "fallen" from the sinless state we were in at the time of Creation and have now been infected by the sin virus, such that all of us are born into sin and cannot have the Godly character we were designed to have.
The good news is that through God’s plan of redemption, Jesus makes a way for us to re-connect with God, have our spirits renewed and begin a life journey of growth and movement towards Godly character as we deal to the sin in our lives with the help of God’s Spirit. Christians call this process sanctification.
While all students can seek to become people like this, it is really only possible to make permanent change when they accept Jesus’ gift of salvation, turn from their previous way of life and commit to follow Jesus, dealing with the old bad habits in their lives and asking God to re-shape them into His likeness again.
In this way we begin to return to what God intended us to be – perfect people, serving Him in caring for the world and living together in harmony with nature and with others. The other graduate profile characteristics are most effective and most easily developed when we get this one right.

Student Representative Council
During our Chapel service this week we will be presenting our 2020 Student Representative Council with their badges. There are Student Representatives elected from each class. These students have an important role in bringing student voices the surface. The parents and friends of our Student Representative Council are invited to celebrate with these students.

Halogen National Young Leaders Day
It was an early start on the train for the awesome Young Leaders Day. My favourite speaker was John Coutis. He was so enthusiastic and spoke about the challenges without having legs and how he overcomes everything with enthusiasm. Thomas G
I had a truly amazing day. Some of my favourite things that the speakers said was to believe in myself, that I have value and I can make a difference. I am encouraged to share this message with other students, that God has made them perfectly. Bella T
I really enjoyed listening to the guest speakers at the National Young Leaders Day. They shared their life stories with us and told us that if we work hard, success will eventually come. I was encouraged by listening to them and enjoyed the days with my GPCC friends and teachers. Charlie M
Music, inspirational talks and fun - that basically describes the National Young Leaders Day. It was so fun hearing from four different leaders and their life experiences. What a day! Eloise A
As a leader, it was a great experience to share in the National Young Leaders Day. I was so blessed to go there. I would like to thank Mrs Smith and Mrs Munro for their encouragement as we had a great day. Daniel M

Photo Day - Tuesday 10 March 2020
A quick reminder that Photo Day for Secondary School is tomorrow, Tuesday 10 March. Please make sure your child is in formal uniform and that they adhere to the Uniform Policy. Please note that for those advanced young men that have a hairy growth, they must be clean shaven to have their photo taken. This includes the upper lip.
Year 7 Meet the Teacher and Faculty Evening
Thank you to all those who attended this event last week. It was great getting to speak to so many parents. I hope that it was a useful time for all those who attended to get a handle on all that is happening across Faculties in the Secondary School. Thank you to all the staff who came out for the evening and your wonderful input into the lives of our Year 7.
Student Welfare
The welfare of our students in Secondary School is of highest priority to us at Green Point Christian College. In a world with so many pressures and tensions on our young people, it is vital for us to look after our students in such a way that limits or reduces the stress on them while still meeting the requirements of the NESA.
Our school counsellors, Tiffany, Stephen and Jarel, are of course vital for this. If your student is in need, they are always available.
Similarly, our Year Advisors are here for the welfare of your child. If a child is experiencing difficulties and needs help, the Year Advisors are here for the students in their Year groups to help them sort through any problems.
Year 12
Pressure is building, so listed below are some reprinted tips:
Year 12 need to have their study plans in place, but for those who are struggling here are some tips to keep on track. These are also great for our Year 11 sudents to practise.
8 tips of getting an effective schedule:
• Place the calendar or printed schedule in a visible location so that it is easy to see and follow.
• When writing dates on a physical calendar, use a pencil so that it is easy to make changes if needed.
• Don't create a schedule that is overly rigid or that isn't flexible enough to accommodate emergencies or conflicts that may arise.
• Schedules should be created so that the study times are consistent each day, which will help create positive study habits.
• Don't forsake well-balanced meals for study time. Poor eating habits can lead to fatigue, an inability to concentrate, and consequently less effective study time.
• Schedule study time in a location that has minimal distractions or interruptions.
• Study one course at a time for no more than two hours.
• Colour coded schedules are often easier to see and follow.
4 quick tips to gain better focus:
• For every fifty to sixty minutes of study time, plan a 10 to 15 minute break.
• When taking a break, get a snack for an energy boost, be active and take a short walk, or listen to a few favourite songs.
• Rewards for sticking to a schedule can be given at the end of a study day or at the end of the semester. The reward for adhering to a schedule for a semester should be greater than the reward that one gives him or herself for sticking to it on a daily basis.
• Study time should be scheduled for a time when the student is the most focused and alert. For example, people who are more alert at night should schedule their study time in the evenings.
Year 8 Future Proof Study
If you have not already done so, this is a reminder to submit your decision about your child’s involvement in the “Future Proofing Study” which starts at the beginning of Term 2.
Please visit this website to learn more about the study and submit your permission form: https://www.fpstudy.org.au/tYzkR

Invitation for Student Contributions to The Messenger
Now that the College has moved to Schoolzine for the weekly newsletter, this platform gives us much more flexibility in what we can include and allows for contributions of articles and stories from students alongside the regular sections. We would love to invite students to be the reporter of the week (or month/term).
Students are invited to write a story or article of approximately 350 words and can include images or video.
Topics could include :
- an area of interest from within the school, such as a subject or project you are working on and what you are learning;
- an area of interest from beyond the school, like something you have done through Church or sport or on a holiday;
- a story or poem;
- or another suggestion that we can approve once requested.
The categories could focus on the 5 areas of the Graduate Profile.
Student contributions can be sent to Mrs McLarty at jmclarty@gpcc.nsw.edu.au for inclusion in The Messenger.

NSW ALL SCHOOLS TRIATHLON
Individual
Congratulations to Wade B who in 2019 had such an amazing year that he won our Sportsman of the Year Award.
Here are some of his achievements:
- He qualified for CSSA Swimming;
- He won CSSA Cross Country and then placed 7th at CIS;
- He also dominated the 1500m at CSSA in Athletics, making it to CIS level;
- He played Goalie in the Mariner’s Cup team, where they progressed to the Final;
- At the CSSA Triathlon, he finished 1st in the Individual event and then 2nd in the Teams;
- Several days later, Wade and his Triathlon team competed at the CIS Team Triathlon, where they finished 4th.
Last week, Wade competed at the NSW All Schools Individual Triathlon. He did this event last year and finished in 70th place. In this event, students compete against the strongest and most experienced triathletes in NSW, who are all trying to place in the top 6 to earn a spot on the NSW team. This team then competes at the National Triathlon Championships.
Wade started with the swim leg coming out of the water at the end of the 400m with the leaders, ready to tackle the bike section. This was a 10km ride around the course, so needing to keep a constant and fast pace was important. With a new bike, Wade set a fast pace and was in the leader pack, going as high as equal first.
After a delay due to unforeseen circumstances, Wade finished with the bike and then started his run. He had 3km to go and was looking for a big finish. He ran the required 3kms in just over 10 minutes, which is an exceptionally fast pace, and crossed the finish line in 5th place.
Wade went from 70th last year to 5th place this year, placing so high that he made the NSW Team who will now compete at the National Triathlon Championships.
This is such a phenomenal effort by Wade and a true reflection of the time and dedication that he puts into his training. Congratulations Wade on such an achievement and we wish you all the best for Nationals.

Team
Our Triathlon teams had a lot of success in 2019 at both the CSSA and CIS Team Triathlon Championships.
Due to these results, two teams competed at the NSW All Schools Triathlon Team Events last week and again, our students have represented the College proudly.
This day was not going to be easy, with 218 teams competing in the Junior Boys Division alone, which was where both of our teams were competing.
Our teams were comprised of the following athletes:
Team 1: Swim Spencer M
Bike Jaxon S
Run Wade B
Team 2: Swim Zachary S
Bike Charlie M
Run Noah T
Our swimmers (Spencer and Zachary) have both made it to a State level in swimming; our bikers (Jaxon and Charlie) both competed in the Hunter Schools Mountain Bike Championships last year; and finally our runners (Wade and Noah) have both made it to CSSA level in Cross Country.
In the end, Team 2 just edged out Team 1 by only 80 seconds. Team 2 finished with a time of 38:46, while Team 1 was just behind in 40:06.
Both our teams finished in the top 50 out of over 200 teams. Team 2 was 31st and Team 1 was 50th. A sensational effort indeed.
GPCC SECONDARY SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Our Secondary Swimming Carnival was held last week and it was a wonderful day.
With a great increase in participation and atmosphere, our students were keen to get in the water and go in as many races as possible, whether it be the 50m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle or the 200m IM.
Our novelty events were also a big part this year, with five different fun swim races held between events. There was the usual and classic Salmon Run, where students line up in a lane for their House and when directed, jump into the pool and complete as many laps as possible. We also had the Pool Noodle Relay, with Houses again lining up and trying to pass the noodle down their lane to the end and back as fast as possible.
Our Year 12 students had their annual 50m swim and a very colourful swim it was, with everyone dressed up in bright outfits. Some teachers were also involved in not just the novelty events, but also trying their luck at racing the seniors in some 50m sprints.
The competition was as fierce as ever, with some very close races that went down to the wire. There were some Age Groups that are always extremely close, one being the 15yrs Girls. This group of girls have always been close in their races over the past couple of years and 2020 was no different.
Congratulations to all our swimmers for a superb effort and for representing their House so well. Age Champions and the winning House will be presented in the Term 2 Commendation Assembly.

150 km. If you can, please support Lauren through her efforts to make a small difference. Please click on the GoFundMe link to donate if you can. Thank you.
this connection would also bring some smiles to Charlie over the next month, as he keeps up with her progress.
Well done Lauren, we are proud of your efforts.

Year 7 Mission Focus
Last week Morgan D (Year 7) had her hair cut to raise money for cancer research.

We encourage students to email contributions for our new section of our weekly newsletter, titled "Student Voice". It may be a short story, a poem, service activity, an achievement or award (sporting, scouts, Duke of Ed etc). Please email to jcollins@gpcc.nsw.edu.au for consideration of inclusion in The Messenger.
