On Wednesday night last we held our MADD Night (music, drama, design) and it was a resounding success. COVID has prevented us from putting on this event for the past two years and the students and staff did us proud.
Year 12 students performed their Music and Drama pieces which are a significant part of the HSC program and the TAS students displayed their wood and textiles major projects. Art students presented their works and our Year 11 Hospitality students prepared dinner under the expert guidance of Mrs Lumby and it was delicious and beautifully presented. The whole event was a feast of talent and entertainment.
In some ways these students have the toughest job of the HSC because they have to complete and present their major works early in Term 3, so their time frame is much less than those sitting for other subjects. It is a huge test of time management and creativity and the MADD Night was a credit to the students and the staff who have supported them through this process.
I like to remind students that while they are at school and especially in the final two years, they need to see their schooling as essentially their job. Their work is to turn up to school each day, to pay close attention in class, to do the assigned work and do their best to master what is being taught. This is all good training for the work force. Like any good employee, they need to aim to work at a high standard, to be reliable and trustworthy, to manage their time and their tasks well. It would be good if you talked to your children at home about this approach.
I reported to you last term on a rise in graffiti in our Secondary toilet blocks. We have now installed cctv cameras in several places around the school so we can monitor who enters the blocks at the times we believe graffiti is occurring. While we began the term free of damage, it started up again last week. This time, with the help of the cameras, we were able to catch the perpetrator. We will not tolerate this sort of behaviour at GPCC so anyone caught vandalising or graffitiing school property will be suspended and made to help clean up as reminder of the consequences of their actions on others. Our cleaning manager spent many hours last term cleaning graffiti off cubicle walls and the Green Team then had to repaint everything in the holidays.
Litter seems to be the issue for this term. I have been very disappointed at the increase in litter. We have plenty of rubbish bins around the school but so many students just drop their litter on the ground. We will be looking at a campaign to try to change this poor behaviour too. Again, this is something you can help with at home by talking to your child about their responsibility to keep their school environment clean and healthy.
These two issues are such a contrast to the performance of our seniors at MADD Night. There we saw young people at their very best – using their talents, honed by practice and good learning and being used for the pleasure of others. In graffiti and litter, we see the worst side of young people – thoughtless about the impact of their actions on others and the environment, a selfish and lazy approach to life. Our job as school and as parents is to help them grow up to be the better of the two.

National Science Week – 'Glass: More than Meets the Eye'
Originally Established in 1997, National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge.
Last Monday saw GPCC and YVCS students celebrate National Science Week , with our very own ‘Mad Science Monday’. This event encourages students to be fascinated by the world we live in. It was a fun day for all students to actively participate in mixed age groups. They worked collaboratively in small groups to explore our world.
K-2 students enjoyed blowing bubbles , planting succulents, creating fireworks in jars and looking closely through magnifying lenses. They wondered, pondered , investigated and used enquiry skills to think deeply about Gods creation. They marvelled that oil and water don’t mix, succulent leaves hold their own water and magnets attract . A special highlight was seeing Professor G at work in wig and hot pink tights !
3-4 students applied scientific principles of gravity, created zoetropes, used air pressure to ‘stick’ card to a glass of water, and created delightful, pitched tones playing music in glass milk bottles.
5-6 students enjoyed creating lava lamps, exploding rockets, designing paper planes and learning the principles of aerodynamics. Mr T planted seedlings for our Vegie garden along with some helpers.
It was a magnificent day and we were blessed with fine weather to take many of the lessons outside. Our students are all ‘Super Scientists’ and had an amazing day of learning together.

MADD Night
A fabulous a fabulous night celebrating the achievements of the class of 2022 HSC students undertaking practical subjects. The first MADD night for a few years!
The CAPA theatre was packed to the rafters as family and friends gathered to be entertained and delighted by the creative talents on display. The Music and Drama performances on the stage showed a kaleidoscope of talent from rock to classical, and mesmerising solo and group Drama performances that left a lasting impression. The Visual Arts body of works and Drama costume designs exhibited in the theatre illustrated concepts of depth that the students were passionate about sharing and incorporated a breadth of styles, including fine illustrative gouache work to colour pencil and film. In the TASS area we were delighted by the technical finesse of the Industrial Technology and Textile work.
A special thanks to Mrs Lumby's Hospitality and Food Technology classes, who prepared a delicious supper for all to share.
Mrs Angela Scott - CAPA Co-ordinator

Our Year 7 students had the opportunity to watch 'Backflips Against Bullying' in the MPC. This presentation gave students a clear look at how bullying can happen via social media and tools to stop the bully in their tracks with thought-provoking responses. Our students enjoyed tricks, as well as the practical advice on becoming a more positive member of the school community.

Pick-up & Drop-Off Across from College
A reminder to all GPCC and YVCS parents that the area on the other side of Avoca Drive is private property that we are not allowed to use for drop-off or pick-up of students.
Lisa from the coffee van operates from this space in the morning, and we have asked her to report to us when parents are pulling in to drop-off students. We understand there are still 6 to 8 families regularly doing this.
Please note that the owner of the property will be closing access across the entry in the afternoons which should be a clear deterrent for those thinking this is still an acceptable option.
We thank you for adhering to the arrangement in place as you represent the College and School community.
