The second element of the five in our graduate profile at GPCC is "collaborative".
We are designed for togetherness and flourish when we determine to work well with others. Being made in the image of the God who is three persons in one (the Trinity), it should not surprise us that we are better together. The Trinity work in complete harmony with each other, each playing their part and complementing the others.
God knew that Adam could not and should not work alone in caring for the world and so he created Eve to be his helper and companion. Theologians also remind us that it is not just each individual who reflects the image of God, but humanity as a whole. We are called to collaborate together to care for the world, develop its resources and shape society. The mandate to care for the world and develop it was given to humanity as a whole. Co-operating in this task in and of itself, is an outworking of our God-given purpose and our belief that God has given each person gifts designed to serve and equip others.
As Western culture has moved towards a more individualistic approach to life, we have lost something of the power of collaboration in bringing good to society. At GPCC, we want to recover something of this and teach our students that working well with others is far more effective than working alone.
The Christian faith has always emphasised the metaphor or image of the body – many parts working together to enable the body to function well. Each part must co-operate with every other part for the body to function according to its purpose (1 Corinthians 12:12-26). Collaboration is a natural part of God’s design for humanity.
I had dinner recently with school parents who commented that their children had come home saying, “We are doing a lot more group work these days.” How wonderful that our students are already seeing some changes in the way we run our classrooms. Futurists and social scientists are telling us that what is really required in the future workforce is people with soft skills like collaboration. Even secular society is realising that strident individualism has some limits and that real progress is made when we work together, utilising different skills and perspectives.
Of course, becoming a collaborative person will take a lot more than just some group work in classes. It requires a level of self-reflection as we examine ourselves to see if we are a team player or not. It requires learning the skills of co-operation, humility, courage, negotiation, tolerance and so on. These take time to develop in young people which is why we see our College as starting them on a journey that needs to be continued long after they leave us.
As parents and teachers, we can certainly model collaboration as we work together for the good of our children. Our challenge is to set them an excellent example.
Special Notice re COVID-19
You will have received an email from me on the measures we are taking to address concerns about the Coronavirus pandemic. You will also find posted under the “News” tab on our website a copy of our School Response Plan and some links to helpful sites for information.
I spoke to all students today about the situation, encouraging them to take their responsibility for healthy practices seriously and to ensure they care for each other and treat each other with respect during this difficult and stressful time. We, as adults need to ensure we model to our children how to respond toward each other in situations like this.
We are in a good position to manage on-going learning even if our school is forced to close, so you can help us by encouraging your child to stay focused on learning and help them be prepared for the changes and uncertainty that lie ahead of us.

A big thank you to all parents who participated in supervision and assisted on the day. This is not an event that can happen without our full community involvement to keep everyone safe in and around the water.

We regret to advise that in the interest of student and staff health, the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) on Friday 20 March 2020 is postponed.
National Day Against Bullying – 20 March
The Primary School at GPCC joins with the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) on Friday 20 March – the 10th anniversary of this initiative to find workable solutions to bullying and violence in schools.
The student leaders within the College have led the campaign to encourage all students to stand together against bullying and violence, providing an opportunity for discussions in the classroom and playground to promote the values of kindness and empathy in our community.
The theme for the NDA 2020 is "Take Action Together". This theme aims to elevate student voice, empowering young Australians to join the national conversation. To observe this day, all Primary students are invited to wear an orange accessory (eg hair tie, cap, bowtie etc) to "Take Action Together" against bullying at GPCC.

CSSA PRIMARY SWIMMING CARNIVAL
It was a wonderful day at the CSSA Primary Swimming Carnival. After our superb performance at Zone, we had a large team attend this carnival and they really made our school proud.
The results speak for themselves, showing the amazing swimming talent at our school:
- Sophie C had a great day, with 2 wins in the 8yrs Girls 50m Breaststroke and Backstroke as well as an impressive 2nd place in the 50m Freestyle
- Megan L was busy throughout the day, with her best result in the 12yrs Girls 50m Breaststroke, finishing 3rd
- Felicity R, who dominated Zone in the 12yrs Girls age group, had yet another successful day, winning the 50m Butterfly and finishing 3rd in the Backstroke
- Benjamin T won his 11yrs Boys 50m Backstroke event and also had a 3rd place in the Freestyle. A fabulous effort
- The Senior Boys Freestyle Relay team (made up of Kyne, Crosby, Benji and Tom) had a superb swim, finishing 2nd overall and qualifying for CIS
- The Senior Girls Freestyle Relay team (made up of Megan, Felicity, Bronte and Katie) also were sensational, coming in 3rd place and also qualifying for the CIS Swimming Championships
To top off a wonderful effort by our team, Sophie C was also crowned the 8yrs Girls Age Champion, with Benjamin placing 5th in the 11yrs Boys and Felicity coming 3rd in the 12yrs Girls. Amazing achievements by these swimmers.
The Hunter Zone team also finished a phenomenal 2nd place overall, which is a fantastic effort by our team to contribute their success to such a great result.
A number of our students have now qualified for the CIS Primary Swimming Championships, held on Thursday 26 March at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre.

CIS PRIMARY BOYS AFL TRIALS
AFL has been one of the sports on the Central Coast that has shown a great improvement in both popularity and involvement. A number of students over the years from GPCC have excelled at AFL and this year, we were able to send four talented students to the CIS Primary Boys AFL trials in Sydney.
Blake L, Aidan B, Oliver C and Mitchell R were looking forward to the challenge of competing at these trials. The day started with a number of drills before moving into the games, where the selectors were watching closely to finalise their CIS team.
At the end of the day our boys missed out on selection into the team, but they will be back next year when they are in Year 6, ready for another shot. Well done, boys.
CSSA PRIMARY BOYS SOCCER TRIALS
Last Friday at the CSSA Soccer Trials, nine boys from GPCC attended.
We had the following champions represent our school at these trials: Levi M, Oliver C, Fidel S, Lane D, Zaid AG, Samuel N, Joel P, Jacob G and Aidan VE. Not only did they get to play soccer all day, train hard in a range of drills and game situations to test their skills and agility, but also had a wonderful time playing the sport they love.
The boys were all looking for a spot in the CSSA team which would then compete in the CIS Soccer Championships. Our boys, always loving a challenge of playing against elite players, brought their A-game and gave everything they had.
When the Possibles v Probables teams were announced, Sam was successful in this final test. Unfortunately he just missed out, but to get so close to the final cut was great.
Congratulations to all the boys for their efforts at these trials against over 70 talented and experienced players.
ZONE SECONDARY SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Our GPCC Swim Squad competed recently at the Zone Swimming Carnival at Mingara.
Our school has performed exceptionally well over the years at Zone Carnivals. Only a week ago at Zone Primary, we won the carnival (our 14th Zone title) by over 150 points, which was an impressive comeback considering they were not winning halfway through the day. It goes to show our never-give-up attitude. The Secondary have also had a great track record, winning the carnival many times and hoping that 2020 would be another successful year.
With the events progressing nicely throughout the day, it was evident that our school was too strong. We dominated, winning many events during the day and cementing our status as a tough school to beat at the representative level.
Our experience was evident when it came to the Relays, where we performed amazingly:

4 x 50m Freestyle |
4 x 50m Medley |
12-14 Girls Relay |

The following students were crowned Age Champions for 2020:

At the end of the day, GPCC was again victorious, taking out the carnival by nearly 600 points.
2019/2020 Oztag
The 2019/2020 Oztag season has come to a close and what an epic season it was. This year GPCC had 17 teams registered in the Kincumber competition with players from Kindergarten aged 5 up to students in Year 10.
This season brought with it too many tags, tries and smiles to count. GPCC players should be extremely proud of their efforts, both in skill on the field and their extraordinary display of sportsmanship both on and off the field.
Players represented our school in an excellent manner and referees and committee members from Central Coast Oztag, once again commented on what a pleasure it is to have our students playing with them.
We would like to thank the outstanding volunteer coaches and managers for their hard work running teams this season. The club is so grateful to have you help out.
Congratulations to all our teams on a magnificent season. Special mention must go to the U10 Tigers and the U10 Fireflies on Final ladder standings and to all our other teams who participated. Congratulations to Emily F who earned herself a place in the State Cup Team. Registration for next season will open on 1 July 2020.
Look out for details in The Messenger and on social media.
