As you are probably aware, there is a rise in covid cases happening at the moment. We have had some staff out for a few days and are watching closely to see if this will increase. Just a reminder that if your child has any covid-like symptoms, you should keep them at home until they have gone before you send them back to school.
We have noticed that early onset of symptoms does not always generate a positive RAT result so go with the symptoms rather than the test result. A PCR is still the most accurate way to be sure whether someone is positive or not. There are also a lot of seasonal allergies and other flu like illnesses around, some of which are long-lasting. If in doubt, you should get a clearance from your GP before returning a child to school.
HSC examinations are now over, and our students handled them well. Year 10 have had exams this week which are a good training run before they enter the HSC years. Like any form of assessment, some practice at how to approach an exam is important and helpful. There is however, increasing talk about the future of the HSC and the ATAR system as an entry measure for university. Less than 40% of all first year students at universities, get there because of an ATAR. There are multiple pathways for future study these days, so a poor HSC result does not close the door totally to university study.
At GPCC, we continue to look at ways to increase the academic results of our students. It is good to know that many of you are raising your expectations for your children because expectations go a long way towards helping a child see the importance of the hard work required to achieve well academically. I hope that our students get to understand that everything they do should be done to the best of their ability and take pride in working hard.
Continuing formal study is something we encourage our staff to consider. We have a number of staff doing post-graduate work including three of us who are working at doctoral level. We trust that students can see that learning is for life and at no stage of our lives can we say, we have learnt enough. I encourage you to have conversations with your child about the value of formal study and that you support them even if they find schoolwork challenging. We do best in anything when we have a good support team behind us.

Wacky Hair Day
Our students and teachers had a lot of fun coming to school with wacky hair on Wednesday. It was great to see so many children get involved with this fun initiative and great cause.
A massive thank you to everyone who contributed on the day. We raised almost $900! This money will go towards our Sponsor children.

Sustainable Future Festival
This week Years 2 & 3 had an excursion to the Sustainable Future Festival. The festival offered a variety of educational experiences revolving around resource management, reducing waste, recycling, and sustainability.
Students enjoyed making musical instruments and other art pieces out of recycled materials. They got to see and touch many amazing insects and learn about their important role in managing waste. A highlight was having close encounters with some very cool and calm reptiles! It was fun to sit behind the wheel of a garbage truck and practice sorting waste into the correct bins.
It was a wonderful hands-on opportunity for students see how even small changes can have a positive impact on caring for our environment.

Special English Workshops
This week, Years 5 and 6 students have had the privilege of participating in writing workshops with Mrs Jillian McKay (Secondary Head of English).
Year 6 students have been reading and understanding poetry, discovering its purpose, the wide range of emotions it covers, and learning about how to write interesting and powerful poems themselves. They also had an experience of high school, complete with lesson bells and a secondary classroom.
Year 5 are exploring ways to develop their imaginative writing, considering how colours, description and even the weather can add depth and excitement to their stories. This is one of the many ways that our students benefit from being in a K-12 learning environment and we are continuing to build connections between our Primary and Secondary schools.

As this Messenger goes to print, our Year 12 students, the graduates of 2022, will be planning, preparing, preening, and polishing in readiness for the Year 12 Formal. This evening is a wonderful time for staff, students, and parents to celebrate 13 years of schooling and is the final school event. We pray God’s blessing over each of the students, for the evening and for the paths, known or unknown, that each one will take. We pray that the seeds that have been planted bear fruit and that the students will cherish their time at GPCC.
At Monday morning assemblies, I like to provide students with encouragement and to celebrate their accomplishments. This week we were able to thank four of our College Prefects who went above and beyond their role to serve the College. Thank you, Izelle, Oscar, Eden and Kanela, for assisting with updating 175 fire safety flipcharts.
I also received an email from one of our school bus drivers. He was very impressed with the courteous and respectful way the students conducted themselves. He went on to thank the staff “who make your work a ministry and impart your life and values into the students God has brought to you”. What a lovely email to receive!
Year 11 Textiles and Design Experiments
This week our Year 11 Textiles and Design students experimented with natural dyes on wool, silk, and cotton. They used foods including beetroot, turmeric, tea, coffee, and raspberries to create different dyes.
They also experimented with rust dyeing using nails and pressing flowers into the material with a rolling pin.

Year 9 PASS Gymnastics Trip
Our Year 9 PASS Class had the privilege of going off-site for a Gymnastics session this. Looks like they had fun!

Write a Book in a Day Project (Secondary & Primary)
In Term 3, a group of ten Years 7 and 8 students and ten Year 6 students worked to together on the ‘Write a Book in a Day’ project. This project sees students create an entire book in just one day, working within unexpected parameters and creating illustrations alongside their story. Write a Book in a Day aims to raise funds for The Kids’ Cancer Project and provide new, interesting and fun stories that will be published and available for children currently fighting cancer.
We congratulate the GPCC teams on their efforts. They showed great collaborative skills, sharing ideas and delegating responsibilities to ensure that all elements were covered and checked. It was a long day, with students not finishing until 5pm, but they persisted with good humour, patience and a desire to do their best work together. Much thanks to their teachers, Mrs Kaylie Turner and Ms Lauren Pal, for their efforts, encouragement, guidance and provision of snacks.
The two stories – ‘Im-Possible’ (Yr 6) and ‘The Tale of Norfolk Island’ (Yrs 7/8) – can now be viewed via https://writeabookinaday.com/library/books.php?t=sna.
Well done to both teams for an excellent effort.

Congratulations to Mrs Kirk - Australian OzTag Champion
Congratulations to Mrs Angela Kirk who last weekend competed in the Australian OzTag Championships at Coffs Harbour. She represented the Central Coast in the Women’s Masters division.
After a slow start on the first day, the team gathered momentum on the second day and eventually went on to win nail-biter of a final, where she was in the last five on the field. Mrs Kirk is a wonderful example to our students of finding a passion and giving it everything that you’ve got. Mrs Kirk is now a State Champion, a National Champion and a World Champion in OzTag!

Introducing the Fathering Project
The Fathering Project is an evidence-based organisation that aims to promote positive fathering behaviours and fathers’ engagement with their infants, preschool, primary school, and adolescent-aged children.
Fathers and father figures play a critical and distinct role in children’s lives and the evidence demonstrating fathers’ potential to positively influence their children’s health, social success and academic achievements is indisputable. There is further information available on this research on the GPCC website - https://www.gpcc.nsw.edu.au/community/the-fathering-project
This month we are excited to be launching The Fathering Project for the fathers and father figures of our GPCC and YVCS students.
Our launch event is on Friday 25 November at 6pm, which will be a BBQ and Paper Planes evening.
