Many of you are aware that GPCC launched a new initiative two years ago called the Melos Foundation. This is an umbrella company that offers support services in the areas of governance, leadership and business management to members of the Foundation. We currently have 5 members in the Foundation: GPCC, YVCS, Greenacre CC, Yanginanook School and Brewarrina CS, with another joining this month.
The aim of the Melos Foundation is captured by its name. Melos is the Greek word used by the Apostle Paul in his New Testament letters and refers to the ‘body’. A human body is made up of many parts, all of which are necessary for the body to function well and be healthy. In these days of increasing compliance and complexity, an independent school faces significant challenges in the areas of governance (finding suitably experienced and qualified directors), leadership and business management. By banding together under the Melos Foundation, participating schools receive quality governance from a common group of directors, school principals work together to encourage each other, and business managers get advice and support from each other.
The Melos Foundation also believes in strong partnerships with parents and so have proposed the idea of the establishment in each member school of a Parent Advisory Group (PAG). Below are listed the main elements of the terms of reference:
- The PAG exists to partner with the school by working with the Principal, providing advice and support to them in their leadership of the school.
- The PAG holds no authority over the Principal or the School but acts in an advisory and communication capacity only.
- The focus on the PAG’s work will be in the areas of academics, pastoral care and wellbeing, school improvement and parent participation opportunities.
- The PAG and the Principal should meet at least once per term.
- A wide cross-section of parents should be selected if possible, covering the year levels/stages of the school.
- As the PAG represent the ethos of the school, the office holders must be committed practising Christians able to sign and adhere to the Statement of Faith of the school.
- Names and contact details of PAG members must be made available to all parents to foster communication with them and following each meeting a summary of the issues raised and any actions taken by the school should be made available to all parents.
We will officially open for expressions of interest shortly and look forward to enhancing parent participation in our school in this way.

Cast your care on God - He cares for you
This week our wonderful Year 6 students are exploring Canberra. As Mrs Smith has joined them for this learning adventure, I have been given the privilege of writing to you today.
Over the holidays, my family watched the movie, ‘True Spirit’ which recounts the story of Jessica Watt and her attempt to circumnavigate the world in a yacht at the age of 16.
Our family sat on the edge of our seats as Jessica endured and overcame all the trials of unforgiving seas, broken equipment, and extreme loneliness. There were countless times she had to draw on her training, support crew (via satellite phone), and sheer determination to solve problems just to survive.
As I reflected on the enormity of Jessica’s trip, it was evident that even though she had a goal, she didn’t achieve it on her own. She had her family and sailing community to help.
There may be times in our lives when we feel alone and isolated. We can tell ourselves that no one understands what we are going through and try to soldier on through life on our own, but God didn’t create us to be alone. He wants us to support and help each other. The Bible says in Galatians 6:2, “Carry one another’s burden; in this you will fulfill the law of Christ”. In Primary school, we constantly remind our students to speak to a teacher if they are feeling worried or hurt and we will always help them. There is power in asking for help as it takes away the notion that we are alone, and no one will understand what we are going through. We can also take comfort in knowing that God is with us, and we can cast all our cares on Him, because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).
If you are facing a challenge in your life, can I encourage you to reach out to a family member, friend or GPCC staff member. We consider everyone in our school community as special and are more than willing to be a listening ear.
Year 6 in Canberra
This week our Year 6 students have been busy in Canberra learning, exploring, building relationships, and growing in their understanding of Australia.
The group visited the Museum of Australian Democracy, sat in the Senate in Old Parliament House, and had a hands on experience of the voting process in the Electoral Commission. They walked ANZAC parade, visited the National Museum, the National Gallery, and learnt lots at the Dinosaur Museum.
The AIS and Questacon were big hits as the students were able to participate in physical and hands on activities.
They also visited Parliament House where they got to witness the senate in action as the politicians were sitting this week, and participate in a mock parliament passing a bill.
All round is was a great trip.

Winter Uniform
Students may begin to wear the winter uniform from Monday 15 May. This is the first Monday after Mother’s Day. During the winter months, trousers are no longer compulsory for winter uniform and boys have been given the choice to wear shorts if the weather is suitable. During terms 2 and 3, our hat policy in Primary is relaxed and students are not required to wear their hats our into the playground as the UV level is below 3. Girls may continue to wear the Skort throughout winter and can wear black stocking/tights underneath for warmth.
A reminder that the soft-shell jacket is for sale in the uniform shop and is an excellent source for warmth as an outer garment. If students are cold, they can wear the red jumper under the soft-shell jacket. Students are not permitted to wear hoodies or jumpers other that what is described in the policy.

Have you ever played Mario Kart?
In it, you can pick up items to help your driver or hurt others. Probably the most powerful of these is the bullet, which will take you extremely quickly through the course without you needing to steer. Often it will leave you in first place without any effort.
But what if you didn’t understand the game and tried to dodge the bullet when you saw it. It would seem like a symbol you would want to avoid. You would be missing out on some great power that would transform your position in the game.
Some students are a bit wary of Christian activities in school. They are reluctant participants in Chapel or Bib Studies. If this is you, I would want you to think about the possibility that you are avoiding something that could be very good – it could even be something transformative in your life. Like the bullet, it would be worth learning more about it and even taking hold of it and seeing how it could change your life.
I became a Christian later in life – I was that person avoiding the ‘bullet’, but once I learned of Jesus’ power and embraced Him as my saviour, my position in life was transformed forever.

CIS Netball Trials
Last Friday, Sibella M, Ruth G, Grace B, Lily D played netball in the CSSA team at the CIS (Combined Independent Schools) netball trials. The CSSA team played many games throughout the day going through undefeated in all their matches.
From these games, both Lily and Sibella were chosen for the Possibles v Probables teams. Unfortunately, the girls missed out on selection in the CIS team but all of them can be extremely proud of the achievement for making these trials.
They are very talented sportswomen and I’m sure they will continue to have many opportunities to play representative netball at different levels in the near future. Well done girls!

CSSA have recommended that all adults (teachers, volunteers, parents) complete the following module on Child Protection before attending any CSSA event (trials, gala days or carnivals). Thank you

Please email Mr McSwan before these dates if your child (Years 5 and 6 only) would like to be considered. They need to be currently playing in the sport and have several years’ experience (preferably at a Representative level): Parents are required to transport students to and from these trials.

This week our Staff Member of the Week was awarded to Mrs Glenda Fourie.
Glenda received two nominations:
“Glenda organises all exams for special provisions students. She works very hard and is so efficient. It's a tough job organising all those exams on top of everything else, but she does it without complaint. Glenda has communicated with many different teachers and parents."
“Glenda is a servant-hearted work colleague. In her role in enrichment, especially in dealing with assessments, she is always ready to be supportive of both students and teachers. She goes above and beyond to clarify, provide assistance, and make adjustments to ensure students get equal opportunities. Glenda is an example of someone who is calm and promotes peace wherever she goes. She tries to find solutions that work for everyone and demonstrates humility in her day to day. Despite having to deal with a range of personalities, teaching and learning styles, she seems to take these challenges in her stride.
Teacher Profile element: Godly in Character
GPCC has launched a fundraising project today that will run until Sunday 4 June to help raise funds towards a truck for Pastor Isaac and the team that conduct the Rivers Convention each Easter.
You can learn more about this project at the special webpage set up for this fundraising effort - http://Qr.survival.net.au/gpcc
The fundraiser is in partnership with Survival First Aid Kits, with Green Point Christian College receiving a 25% cash return towards our project for every purchase made through our unique portal - http://Qr.survival.net.au/gpcc
As the purchaser you will also receive a 10% discount off the recommended retail price by using the code GPCC.
Please note that this fundraiser can also be shared with family and friends who may want to purchase a first kit at this time, but they will also need to use the GPCC portal (http://Qr.survival.net.au/gpcc) rather than purchase direct through the Survival website. You will see the posters up around the College and in our newsletter over the coming month.
Thank you for your support, and we are looking forward to reaching our goal together and supporting Pastor Isaac and the team as they share the good news throughout the Central West.
First Nations Observances
During the second half of Term 2 each year, there are three significant events for all Australians: Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week.
These observances are not just for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities; they are for everyone. Participating in First Nations Australian events allows us to start a conversation where we all can discuss our shared history, rich cultural experiences and find a way forward for a stronger more inclusive Australia. It is particularly important this year with the vote for ‘a voice to parliament’ later in the year.
See PDF below for upcoming events and obvervances.
AECG Meeting
The Tjudibaring AECG is meeting next week 17 May at Erina High School. All first nations families are invited to attend. Children are welcome. Please see the invitation below. Also be advised, GPCC is hosting the AECG meeting on Wednesday 14 June in the library.
