Parenting has always been a tough job and it is getting even tougher. I am the father of three children and four grandchildren and have first had experience of how hard it can be. We dragged our children back and forth between Australia and New Zealand and one of my sons was really affected by that for some years.
My wife and I never claim to be excellent parents as we look back on many mistakes and the misguided things we did to our children. But today, we have three lovely adults who are doing well in life and of whom we are very proud. We taught them to be strong and independent early in life and that they would not always have us and did not actually need us. We love each other and really enjoy connecting now they are adults.
We were strict and the children still talk about some of the things we did not allow them to do and the punishments they had to endure but it is usually with good humour. With hindsight, they have come to acknowledge that we had good intentions even if we got it wrong sometimes.
I see today a very different approach to parenting to our own and that is not always a bad thing. Given we recognise we did not always get it right, changes were needed and have often been good. But we also grieve over the things we see that appear to be producing weak children and weaker adults. We laugh about the concept of the ‘tiger mum’ or the ‘helicopter parent’, but I experience interaction with such people regularly. It is refreshing to work with parents who are trying to take a sensible road between protection and total freedom.
Anxious parents make for anxious children. One of our previous counsellors used to say, the parent should at least appear to the child to be the least anxious person in the room. This is increasingly not the case. I see parents really worrying about the safety of their children but actually not shielding them from one of the most harmful things in our society – the mobile phone - with its easy access to hurtful social media posts, pornography and graphic images of traumatic world and life events.
I also see parents modelling poor behaviour to their children. Rushing to their defence without getting all the facts or refusing to believe others when they report that the child has done something inappropriate, blaming the school for what is happening to their child without taking some responsibility for it themselves and so on.
If it does take a village to raise a child, then we really need each other in the process. School and home (and Church) working together will help each child grow into mature, confident, capable adults.

National Prayer Breakfast
On Monday 13 November our 2024 Prefects attended the National Prayer Breakfast in Canberra. We heard from Danny and Leila Abdullah about the power of forgiveness, prayed for our nation with representatives from both parties, and sang Amazing Grace, all in the symbolic heart of our country. Students also met Julian Leeser (MP for Berowra), Scott Morrison (MP and former PM), Daniel Pampuch (CEO of CSA) and Mark Spencer (Director of Public Policy, CSA). It was wonderful to hear students asking these leaders questions about the role of faith in politics, how faith shapes their political agendas, and what it means to be a Christian in the public eye. We also took time on the lawn above to Parliament House to reflect on our time there and to pray for our school leaders, our government, and our nation.
Special thanks to Mr Steve Spies, retired principal from Berowra Christian School, who volunteered to drive the minibus. He also took time to invest in our students' lives, introducing them to key people at the breakfast and challenging them in how they live out their faith and what it means to spend their lives in the service of God's kingdom.

Year 9 Girls Mission Trip Report
The Year 9 girls mission team headed out to Brewarrina and Gulargambone on Friday 20 October for a week of supporting the ministry of Pastor Isaac Gordon and Pastor Henry Louie. The girls on the team were: Hannah B, Morgan D, Alice H, Imogen H, Matilda L, Isabella T and Izzy W. The staff on the trip were Mrs Barnes, Mr McGillivray and ex-student, Olivia F.
After a long drive, the girls set up camp at Four Mile Reserve in Brewarrina and headed into the local youth group. There they were met by many excited young people that were very happy to meet them. The girls lead some games and shared some testimonies. These were all enjoyed by the participants and the girls on team.
On the Saturday after morning devotions, the girls had some time at the council swimming pool and engaged with some of the locals. It was wonderful to see how the girls seamlessly mixed with the locals. That evening a couple of the locals came and shared a meal with the girls around the campfire.
On Sunday morning the team headed to church and performed an item for the congregation. They sang ‘The Blessing’. The congregation and Pastor Isaac felt very blessed by the song. A few more girls shared their testimony in church and then enjoyed a meal with the locals in the church. After church, the team travelled an hour to a small town called Weilmoringle. There they enjoyed hearing the old stories that were shared by Aunty Josie Byno. The team also attended the evening service where they shared a few more testimonies and also performed their item.
On Monday, the girls met with Pastor Isaac at the Old Mission site where they learnt some of the history of the Mission and what it looked like and some of the stories that came out of there. That afternoon, the team went to Brewarrina Christian School where they spent time with the students at lunch and also put together some care packages for the students. These were the result of a fundraising effort of Morgan D and her mum as well as some of Morgan’s friends, Isabella, Alice and Imogen. They also raised enough money to buy some much needed resources for the school which Mr and Mrs Turner were very thankful for.
On Tuesday, the team made their way into town and visited the Brewarrina Cultural Museum. They were met by local guide Bradley who showed them through the museum and shared much of the local history. Some of this was very sad and highlighted the incredible challenges that the local Aboriginal people faced. After the museum, the team packed up camp and travelled to Gulargambone. They set up camp and enjoyed some more facilities, including hot showers.
The following day, the team travelled to Gilgandra where they picked up Pastor Henry and went to the Warrumbungle National Park after a brief visit to the emu farm at Tooraweenah. The girls enjoyed listening to Pastor Henry’s stories and encouragement of faith. We shared a BBQ lunch at a beautiful picnic spot and then took a short walk to the White Gum lookout. We enjoyed some homemade pizzas for dinner after an enjoyable day.
On our last full day, we travelled with Pastor Henry to Pillaga to the Bore bath where two of our team, Morgan and Isabella were baptised by Pastor Henry. This was a wonderful witness and encouragement to the team to see these two young ladies to publicly declare their faith in Jesus. After this, we shared a BBQ lunch and then had some fellowship with Pastor Henry in the church at Pillaga.
After packing up our tents and all our equipment we headed back to the Central Coast where we were greeted by some very happy parents. Overall, the girls had an amazing time and built some lifelong memories.

CSSA State Year 5/6 Girls Basketball Gala Day
On Monday 13 November we had our team of Years 5/6 superstar girls travel to Penrith to play in the CSSA State Basketball Gala Day. Having dominated at Zone level, the girls expected a much greater challenge at this event with the only way through to the finals was to top their Pool.
Not only did the girls top their Pool but they again showed their class, exceptional skill and humility by convincingly beating other teams to make it through to the semi-finals and eventually the Grand Final to be crowned State Champions.
Mr Vartan (coach) reports that ‘It was scary how well the girls played. The referee of the GF mentioned to me after the GF, the girls would probably beat the boys’ grand finalists as well. Even suggested we should have entered the boys comp J J. I am passionate about girls being recognised and it being ok to want to win. What was incredibly rewarding was seeing how the girls won with such grace and humility. Even during the GF, they were so encouraging towards their opponents’.
I’d like to thank Mr Vartan for the time he put into training and coaching the team over the last two years, Mr Sneyd for travelling down for the day and to the parents for making sure the girls made training sessions and for transporting the girls to the CSSA tournament.
Finally, to the girls, congratulations on such a wonderful achievement and for representing the College in such a fine manner.
Results:
Game 1: Win against Penrith 52-5
Game 2: Win against Greenacre 40-4
Game 3: Win against Northern Beaches 34-0
Semi-Final: Win against Oxford Falls 26-3
Grand Final: Win against Covenant 34-2

Callum is a quiet achiever who gets his job done very well with no fuss. However, what people don’t see is how he goes above and beyond to help those he works with or who come to the Service Desk. Example - Cal will hear a conversation and be quietly looking up the answer so he can help. He could just ignore the conversation and get on with his own job, but no, Cal loves to help others in every way he can, so he goes out of his way to do that.
Cal will be the first person to help when the job is hard and includes heavy lifting or dirty work. He is also the person who helps with the boring jobs, he just gets in and does the work without complaining. A great example of this is the ICT recent move from the top of the Library to TAS 4. Cal patiently unpacked the storage cupboard and moved it all to the new storage container. Then he cleaned out everything and moved the ICT staff one by one.
Cal is a kind and caring colleague, has amazing patience and will help when everyone else has given up because it’s all too hard. This is also evident in his commitment to his church community and love for Jesus!
Well done Cal – you are loved and greatly appreciated by your fellow staff.

MHFA @GPCC
What is Mental Health First Aid? (MHFA). It is a practical, skills-based education program that equips whole school communities with the skills and confidence needed to recognise and respond to someone experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis. By improving mental health literacy and reducing stigma, Mental Health First Aid courses also help improve outcomes and help seeking behaviours for those affected by mental health problems.
In Staff Devotions, as a Mental Health First Aid Instructor, I was privileged to present Mental Health First Aid Certificates of Completion to 18 more staff. The College now has 26 trained MHFA staff in total, with many expressions of interest for training in 2024.

An Invitation to the Community
A CHRISTMAS GATHERING FOR THOSE IN THE COMMUNITY WHO HAVE LOST LOVED ONES.
The gathering will be a time of meeting together with others who are experiencing bereavement to honour loved ones who are no longer with us. We aim to provide an open door to the community so that all those who are grieving can know that there is a place where their pain will be acknowledged, validated and supported, especially during this Christmas season.
The event will take the form of an informal Christmas gathering and will include music, readings, poetry and a short message of hope. Morning tea is provided.
The gathering is an initiative of Mosaic, a group of people from diverse backgrounds who join together monthly to support one another through bereavement. It is an informal time of listening, learning and sharing our stories with others. All those who are experiencing bereavement are welcome to join the group.
You are not alone.
