Socially Engaged
A key element of our learner profile is for our students to be socially engaged.
It states that;
"We are designed to serve and help others, and to redeem the brokenness of the world."
This is a key part of the learner profile, giving shape to the purpose of a Green Point Christian College education.
As we seek to equip students toward lives of redemptive action, it naturally ought to ensure that we become learners who are concerned about the world around us.
As a Christian School this desire to be socially engaged comes from the words of Jesus. In Matthew 22, a legal expert asks Jesus to outline the most important Law. Jesus’ responds with the following statement.
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Jesus here clearly articulates that the greatest command - and the loftiest goal - we have is to love our neighbour. To show sacrificial concern for the other. This is the example Jesus gives us in his life, death and resurrection. In His life, He regularly cared for those that were on the margins of society. In His death, He showed his love for us by humbling himself to death on the cross and paying the penalty of all our sins. In His resurrection, He conquered death and demonstrated his power over sin and death, confirming his promise.
This is the story that we get to be a part of now. It is this story that reshapes our imagination of what can be, it changes our perception of what a ‘good life’ is. When we live out of this story, we no longer live for ourselves, but we live for others. Part of this is to actively cultivate and learn how to be socially engaged.
Here at Green Point Christian College we encourage our students to not simply live for themselves, but to be aware of the many stories around them. To love the people that God brings into their world, to get to know their stories and in doing so they co-labour with Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to be healers and restorers of this world.

Year 6 Canberra
Day 1: We departed early from the College and make our way down to Canberra arriving in time for lunch at the National Capital Authority. We visited the Mount Ainslie lookout to take in the sights of the whole Canberra region, before heading to the Museum of Australian Democracy, and finishing our day at the National Electoral Education Centre. It was a huge first day and our evening was spent settling into our accommodation and some free time.
Next, we visited Canberra Zoo where we saw so many amazing animals, what a fantastic zoo in the heart of our capital!
Last stop for today was Questacon. The kids immersed themselves into the interactive activities and particularly enjoyed the giant slide.
Day 3: Another big day of visiting Canberra’s sites.
We began our day with a trip to the National Museum of Australia where we were guided around the ‘Meet the People’ gallery to learn about some of Australia’s Indigenous history.
Next, we visited the National Arboretum where the students were given an orienteering task in small groups, they enjoyed this activity which took them on an adventure through the gardens. This was a beautiful venue overlooking the newly established trees, Parliament House and the distant mountains.
Following this, we arrived at The Mint (temporary venue) where we learnt so much about the history of Australian coins and we discussed if cash was still relevant and relied upon in our society.
We all enjoyed an early dinner before heading to the long-awaited Laser Tag.
Day 4: This morning we ate pancakes for breakfast and sang Happy Birthday to one of our students. We packed our bags and headed off to the AIS where we toured around the swimming pool, gym, indoor volleyball courts and the gynamsium before participating in the interactive sports zone where we all had a ball!
We enjoyed morning tea and departed homeward bound.
We are currently due to arrive between 4:30 and 5pm this afternoon.
Thank you to all our wonderful staff for providing this amazing opportunity for our Year 6 students to visit our Nations capital.

Easter Art Competition
In Secondary school, we recently ran an art competition to coincide with our K-12 Easter Chapel Service on the theme of ‘Jesus is powerful’. The following students are to be congratulated on their creative efforts.
Monty C and Alex B from Year 7 and Brianna F in Year 8. These students will receive a prize at our next assembly.

Year 7 English
Year 7 are studying The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. As part of their studies, they had to make a comic strip of a scene. Some of the scenes were, when Lucy walks into Narnia, or when the children meet the witch. The students loved bringing art into the English classroom and produced wonderful work. They had to write dialogue to accompany the scenes, which was challenging. Punctuation is often difficult and when dialogue is involved, students must remember quotation marks as well as capital letters.

GPCC Sport Teams
We are looking forward to sending our teams to a number of Gala Days and competitions in Primary this year.
Students will have a chance to trial for certain school teams over the coming terms and will need to keep a close eye on the notices and listen out for Assembly announcements for when trials will be held.
The protocol for team selection is as follows:
- Teams have at least 2-3 trials before final selection.
- Unfortunately, it is simply not possible for all children who trial to be included in final teams. It is not uncommon for up to 60 students to trial for a team that only has 10 spots available. Due to these limited spots, it is highly likely that students will miss out on making the team. We acknowledge that we have a number of skilled athletes who trial for these representative teams and we strive to give opportunity during trials for students to demonstrate their skills.
- Once teams have been chosen, they will aim to have at least one training session each week before a competition.
Individual Sport Trials for Primary CSSA and CIS Teams (NOT GPCC teams)
These trials are not for GPCC school teams that we trial for here at school to play at certain gala days throughout the year (as mentioned above). The CSSA or CIS trials are usually held in Sydney and students will be trialling against students from either other Christian Schools (CSSA) or other Independent Schools (CIS) and are usually recommended for those students that compete at a representative level.
Please email Mr McSwan before these Nomination dates if your child (YEARS 5 AND 6 ONLY) would like to be considered. They need to be currently playing in the sport and have several years’ experience (preferably at a Representative level): Parents are required to transport students to and from these trials.

String Lessons and Ensemble Program
Green Point Christian College now has two wonderful string tutors Marina and Monica teaching violin and cello at the school. The school would like to build this string program to a size that we can begin a string ensemble featuring violin, viola and cello. Students that are interested would begin with private lessons in either violin, viola or cello as we build toward an ensemble program in the future. The school will have instruments available to hire in Term 2.
Enquire now to begin in Term 2 or contact Daniel Friend the Music Tutor Administrator (daniel.friend@gpcc.nsw.edu.au) with any further questions.
