Remembering Warren Goodsell - a Green Point Christian College Pioneer
This week I am pausing the last part of the series I have been doing to remember the memory of Warren Goodsell. Warren passed last Monday after a long battle with cancer and his funeral and celebration of life was on Wednesday.
Most of our community do not know, and have not had the pleasure of meeting Warren Goodsell. However, without him and our other pioneers, Green Point Christian College would not exist.
In the late 1970’s Warren was the founding chairman of a committee of interested Green Point Baptist Church members to explore the opening of a Christian school.
The meetings were held in Warren’s home around the dinner table well before the school opened. Such was his commitment to seeing a Christian school on the Central Coast, that he took a second mortgage on the family home to fund the start-up of the college. He, and our other pioneers took this step of faith and sacrificed their time, talents and finances to start the school and to ensure it flourished during those challenging early years.
Warren did these things out of the wellspring of his faith in Jesus Christ and a desire to see young people on the Central Coast grow up into Christ through the provision of a Christian school.
Green Point Christian College is now a very different and much larger place than the one that existed when Warren was Chairman. However, we do share the same commitment to Jesus and the same desire to see our students come to know Christ and serve Him through lives of redemptive action.
We thank God for Warren, his family and our other pioneers for their commitment and sacrifice to the cause of Christian education, and we pray that God will continue to raise up people here at Green Point Christian College with that same kind of spirit to continue to faithfully develop the school for generations to come.
Head of Primary Announcment
Over the past month or so we have been undertaking our recruitment process for the Head of Primary position.
We engaged EnrichedHR, a recruitment firm, to support us in this process to ensure we reached a good range of applicants and conducted a smooth, and equitable process.
We had a large pool of quality applicants, and a very strong shortlist.
After much prayer and consideration by the panel I am pleased to announce that the successful applicant is Mrs Amanda Rutlidge.
We look forward to the ongoing contribution Amanda will make to the College through her leadership.

There are many different ways to show leadership.
Last week, our 2025 Prefect Group went on a camp to develop their leadership skills, reflect on what it means to be a leader and build vision for what their group will look like. You can read more about the camp below.
A favourite saying of mine with respect to leadership in schools is “You don’t need to be a badge to be a leader.” While we are blessed to have a strong Prefect group, I encourage students to think about how they can show leadership – in the school, in their classes and among their peers. This could be through proposing and running some initiative but it could also be through leading by example.
Matthew 20:28 says that Jesus “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” The model of leadership Jesus gives us is a sacrificial one, where he places the needs of others before his own. The more people we have leading in this way, the better our school community will be.
Prefect Leadership Retreat
Our newly selected 2025 Year 12 Prefects attended their leadership retreat recently – a great opportunity to build a strong team, be challenged in their personal faith, and to share and shape their vision and dreams for our student body and school community. Mr Andrew McInnes (a previous GPCC staff member) led sessions that focused on God’s story and how we can invite others to share that story. The students participated in rock climbing and team-building activities, enjoyed the lovely new facilities at CRU Lake Mac, and had opportunity to share their own testimonies. Mrs Jacqui Melck (Year Advisor) and Mr Steve Lobsey (Head of Secondary) both attended for a day to encourage students, share insights and participate in the fun. Much thanks to Mrs Rebecca Gavin and Mr Jordan Leonard for their organisation of camp and their contributions in leading student sessions and attending over the three days.
These prefects are an outstanding group of young people and we look forward to seeing them grow in leadership, character and connection over the next twelve months.
Mrs Jillian McKay
Max Potential
Congratulations to Eleftherios K (Year 11) who has been participating in Max Potential this year. Last Wednesday 21 August, after five months of consultation, he delivered an entrepreneurial pitch designed to deliver the needs of our local aged care community.

Central Coast Oztag Gala Day - Southern
On Thursday 22 August we had 5 teams represent GPCC at the Central Coast Oztag Primary School Gala Day (Southern) at Umina Oval.
The teams played lots of games throughout the day with not much rest in between matches, they managed to improve as the day went on. We had a mixed bag of results against some tough schools with a special mention to Coach, Mrs Stretton and the 3/4 Girls team for going on to win the Gala Day in their division (see report below).
Well done to all the boys and girls who played their hearts out with excellent dodging, tagging, try scoring and teamwork. Also, to the coaches for selecting and training the teams Mr Brown, Mrs Sirone, Mr Gibbins and Mrs Stretton.
3/4 Girls Oztag Report - Winners
What a brilliant display of Oztag from our Years 3 and 4 girls team.
The day started with perfect weather conditions and lots of excitement and enthusiasm. During the rounds we had lots of talent on display. Some spectacular runs and consistent, tight defence. The girls ended the rounds in third place, taking us through to the semi-final against Coast Christian. This was a tight game but a brilliant try by Saoirse ended the match 1-0 and saw us through to the grand final against Central Coast Sports College. Having lost to this team in the rounds, the girls were feeling nervous but ready to give it their all and give it their all they did. Brilliant tags by every member of our team kept the opposition to one try and exceptional running, weaving and dodging resulted in 4 tries for us. Congratulations to Eden, Scarlett, Indy, Maddie, Elle, Savannah, Taya, Maisie, Amelia, Liza, Samara and Saoirse. They are the Central Coast Oztag winners for 2024! Special mention goes to Saoirse who was awarded Grand Final Player of the Match by Central Coast Oztag. Outstanding effort girls.
Mrs Stretton

GPCC Sport Teams
We are looking forward to sending our teams to a number of Gala Days and competitions in Primary this year.
Students will have a chance to trial for certain school teams over the coming terms and will need to keep a close eye on the notices and listen out for Assembly announcements for when trials will be held.
The protocol for team selection is as follows:
- Teams have at least 2-3 trials before final selection.
- Unfortunately, it is simply not possible for all children who trial to be included in final teams. It is not uncommon for up to 60 students to trial for a team that only has 10 spots available. Due to these limited spots, it is highly likely that students will miss out on making the team. We acknowledge that we have a number of skilled athletes who trial for these representative teams and we strive to give opportunity during trials for students to demonstrate their skills.
- Once teams have been chosen, they will aim to have at least one training session each week before a competition.
CSSA (Christian Schools Sports Association) Child Protection training and Risk Warning
CSSA have recommended that all adults (teachers, volunteers, parents) complete the following module on Child Protection before attending any CSSA event (trials, gala days or carnivals). Thank you
https://www.cssa.net.au/child_protection/index.html#/
Below is a link for the Risk Warning that accompanies all CSSA run events
https://cssa.net.au/risk-warning.html
Individual Sport Trials for Primary CSSA and CIS Teams (NOT GPCC teams)
These trials are not for GPCC school teams that we trial for here at school to play at certain gala days throughout the year (as mentioned above). The CSSA or CIS trials are usually held in Sydney and students will be trialling against students from either other Christian Schools (CSSA) or other Independent Schools (CIS) and are usually recommended for those students that compete at a representative level.
Please email Mr McSwan before these Nomination dates if your child (YEARS 5 AND 6 ONLY) would like to be considered. They need to be currently playing in the sport and have several years’ experience (preferably at a Representative level): Parents are required to transport students to and from these trials.
CSSA and CIS Sport trial dates: Please note these are not for GPCC school teams.
TERM 3
Monday 9 September - CIS Primary Boys Cricket trials (select students. Max 3 per school can be nominated) - Nominations close Monday 2 September
On Wednesday, our Under 14’s Rugby League team participated in the Independent 9s Gala Day held in Cessnock, competing in three matches against St Phillips (Port Stephens), Manning Valley Anglican College (Taree), and Charlton Christian College. In the first game, GPCC kicked off, only to witness an impressive play by a St Phillips player who ran the length of the field to score on the very first play. This early setback galvanized our team, who responded with exceptional resolve, ensuring that no further points were conceded for the remainder of the day. The final scores of 38-7, 28-0, and 40-0 reflect the team's outstanding performance. It was a fantastic day, and we extend our congratulations to all the players for their dedication and effort.

A Reminder Regarding Drop-off, Pick-Up and Parking
Parents and carers are reminded not to park or wait for your students in the 7-11 Service Station.
This build-up of traffic through the 7-11 driveway hinders access to the service station customers and creates a possible danger for foot-traffic accessing this business.
Likewise, parking in the new premises on the opposite side of Avoca Drive is on private property and not considerate towards the current and future businesses who are operating from this block.
Parking in the Little Coasties and Church Office area (P2) is only for parents and carers accessing these buildings.
We encourage you to time your arrival early if seeking to park, or delay your pick-up slightly to enjoy easier flow through Kiss & Drop Zone 1 or Kiss & Drop Zone 3.
Parents and carers who are arriving between 3.20pm and 3.25pm are normally able to drive through to the Kiss & Drop Zones with minimal wait time.
Thank you for working with us with parking for the remainder of Term 3, with this current peak anticipated to ease as our Year 12 students finish daily attendance in Term 4.
