Welcome to Term 4. I began the term by reminding teachers and staff that our task as a Christian school is to "unhide" God and His presence and purposes in the world, and to prepare our students for the type of life God intends for all people, a life of flourishing.
Albert Einstein once said, “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in schools.” This a rather disconcerting statement for teachers who work hard to give their students lots of things to learn. But it reminds us that education is very much about shaping a person for their future.
The process begins at home with you as parents. The first five years, psychologists tell us, are the most significant in shaping the person a child is likely to become in the future. Their attitudes, values, and perspectives are all being formed very early on. Once at school, teachers become the second most important influence. For those of us who are regular Church attenders, the Church also plays a significant role in the shaping of the religious and spiritual perspectives of the child.
This is why we need to partner together so that we work in harmony in the forming of the adult that is to come. The question might be asked, how does teaching someone mathematics or history or how to read, form them as a person? Well, the content of education and the process of education is very connected to our current culture. Schools pass on cultural norms and cultural norms shape people.
A curriculum is not neutral but develops a way of looking at the world in students. That is why as a Christian school, we re-vision the curriculum to ensure that a God perspective comes through. Current NESA curricular exclude or marginalise a religious perspective because we live in a secular culture. God has been replaced by human potential and that is what the curriculum enculturates students into.
This is a change of course from previous generations when a God perspective in education was considered the norm. The interest in religious schools is said to be driven by the recognition by parents of this missing element which is seen to be necessary to ensure that positive values such as kindness, compassion, empathy, co-operation etc are taught to their children.
Now all this is not to criticise public education. Our public schools are a proper reflection of the majority view of our society which believes that a religious perspective belongs not in the public realm but in the private, individual realm. Christian schools like GPCC exist to offer an alternative to those who still want a religious perspective shaping the values and beliefs of their children.
I believe we can work together to shape mature and capable young men and women, who will be a positive influence in the world, seeking to use their talents and abilities to bring restoration and good to those around them. The team at GPCC look forward to working with you on this in Term 4.

Welcome Back to School
It is always wonderful to welcome back our students to the College and hear the sounds of laughter and squeals of delight as they see each other again after a significant break from school. I hope that you have all had a healthy, safe and happy holiday period with your family and friends.

Summer Uniform
Uniform is an important part of demonstrating that we belong together and represents who we are as a College. Thank you for partnering with us as we teach our students the importance of respecting these uniform guidelines.
As the weather warms up, please ensure all students have a hat with them each day for sun protection. Summer uniforms are now compulsory from the start of Term 4.
Black socks are not part of our formal or sports uniform and should not be worn to school. White socks are worn with the girls' uniform and sports uniform and boys are to wear grey socks.
Hats at School
It is now compulsory for Primary students to wear their hats at recess, lunchtime and whenever outside during sport or play. Please take time with your children to find and re-label their sun hats.
Head of School Awards
Congratulations to the following students who achieved the Head of School Award for Week 9, Term 3:
Isla C, KDL; Claire G, KP; Sydney S, 1G; James T, 1PH; James G, 2G; Gabriella S, 2J; Alex L, 3B; Zoe D, 3K; Isabella M, 4B; Henry S, 4M; Abbey S, 5D; Aiden B, 5H; Sienna F, 5P; (none for 6D); Kyne B, 6M and Samuel W, 6T.
NEW Kiss and Drop - UPDATE
We are still awaiting the completion and opening of the new Kiss and Drop. The extenuating circumstances surrounding the delays have been frustrating to both staff and parents. Can I please ask that you continue to practice grace and patience as we work together in what is clearly very cramped pickup conditions.
School Banking
School Banking is a great way for students to learn good habits of saving money, working toward a goal and the importance of planning.
Students can earn rewards for their effort while learning these important lifelong skills. School Banking will begin again on Fridays, from Week 1 in Term 3. Students can bring their bank books and deposits to the office on Friday mornings. From there volunteer parents count and deposit the money at the bank.
If you are interested in assisting with School Banking, please contact the College office.
Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary
Welcome back for our final term of 2020.
Our thoughts and prayers are with our Year 12 students as they get ready to begin their HSC exams next week.
Many of them will be coming in to spend time with their teachers in final preparation for next week. All their teachers will be available during their normal lessons time to work in areas that they desire help with at those times.
HSC Students to Have COVID-19 Test Results Faster
Students taking the 2020 HSC exams will now have their COVID-19 test results fast tracked through pathology. They simply need to advise the nurse or doctor doing the test that they are HSC students. Find your nearest testing clinics:
www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/how-to-protect-yourself-and-others/clinics
Mobile Phones
Our policy for the use of phones at school is very straightforward. They are not to be out in class unless the teacher directs their use as a tool in class. They can be placed in the mobile phone tubs as a student enters a classroom. If they are seen, they will be confiscated and given to the Head of School.
All interactions on phones at recess and lunchtime should be positive and we encourage that students minimise their use at school.
Please do not contact your students at school. This makes it very difficult for them to concentrate and adds extra burden on our teachers.
Year 11 Students
Year 11 students are currently finishing their Preliminary Courses. If they plan to make changes to their course load for Year 12, they need to submit a Subject Change Form with parental permission. No changes can occur until this process is complete.
Textbooks
You may be aware that the Top Book Shop in East Gosford has closed.
Textbooks for Years 11 and 12 Course work will be available for purchase from Box of Books when we have finalised the process or if needed urgently directly from the publisher.

HOUSE CUP
The big Term 3 sport competition in our Primary and Secondary school, the House Cup, wrapped up at the end of last term, with the final round deciding who would win the overall competition.
Years 3 and 4 Division
In the Years 3 and 4 Division, it came down to the final game, with the Bulldogs hoping to hold onto the first place and beat the Hawks, who were close behind. It was another close game, with the Bulldogs jumping to an early lead and holding onto this position, winning 3-0 in the end.
Therefore, the overall champion team in the Years 3 and 4 Division is the BULLDOGS.
The Sharks, who coming into the final week were just in the top 3, had a strong final match against the Falcons, slotting in a goal in the dying seconds to win 2-1 and leapfrog the Hawks to take 2nd place.
The final top 3 placings for the Years 3 and 4 Division were:
- Bulldogs 22pts
- Sharks 19pts
- Hawks 18pts
Years 5 and 6 Division
Coming into the final match in the Years 5 and 6 Division, the Bears were holding onto first place but only by 2 points. They were hoping for a strong performance in their last game to cement their position at the top of the table and to win the overall competition.
A number of teams, such as the Cobras, Foxes and Giants, were close behind and hoping to snatch victory in their final appearance.
The final games were again very competitive, with all teams putting in a big effort. Soccer was tight, with teams slotting in some fantastic goals throughout each game. Basketball was fast and with superb teamwork, provided many scoring chances for attacking teams.
In the end, the Bears won their final matches, earning six important points and to take out the Year 5 and 6 Division. The Dragons made up a lot of ground, winning their final game and jumping into 2nd place.
The final top 3 placings for the Years 5 and 6 Division were:
- Bears 20pts
- Dragons 8pts
- Cobras/Foxes/Dodgers 15pts
Years 7 -10 Division
Netball was the sport of choice, with the Warriors/Hurricanes combining to take on the Eagles/Breakers.
The Warriors/Hurricanes team took an early lead but the Eagles/Breakers fought back, levelling the scores at 12-12. With less than five minutes to go, it was going to be a tight match to the final siren.
The scores remained close, with the W/H edging ahead by a goal. The E/B team were not done, and with less than 30 seconds on the clock, were close to equalising but the defence was too strong.
The Warriors/Hurricanes ended up winning the game 15-14.
The Years 7/8 Team took on the Year 9/10’s in another close game of Netball, with the older stage winning by just one point.
