Last week I announced the establishment of a new company called the Melos Foundation, which will co-ordinate the operations of a number of Christian schools including Green Point Christian College. This is a move to try to ensure that the governance and management of our school is strengthened through the opportunity to have skilled directors and a sharing of academic management and business expertise amongst the joining member schools.
We have selected the name Melos, which is a Greek word for the term "body" and is used by the Apostle Paul in his New Testament letters. He used the metaphor of the body to describe the healthy functioning of the Church. It is made up of many different members, but all need to play their part for the body to function strongly. A cluster of Christian schools, working together will be stronger than the same schools operating individually. Each school will bring its own specialisation and strength such that the whole becomes stronger than the parts.
The other exciting venture that GPCC is involved in is the establishment of a small school in Brewarrina in far north-east NSW, an hour from Bourke. For some years now, we have had a link to the community in Brewarrina and have sent teams of Year 9 students to learn about Aboriginal history and culture and to connect with the Church in the Shire. The local people have been asking us to establish a Christian school for them and we have been seriously exploring this idea for the past 18 months.
We are currently looking to secure a property on the edge of town and convert it into a small school. This will be a school for children from the Brewarrina Shire and eventually we plan to open a boarding school so that children from far west NSW towns will also have an opportunity to receive Christian schooling. While GPCC will be involved in the planning and establishment of the school, it will become a member of the Melos Foundation and add significant factors to the group – remote, rural and largely indigenous. We see great opportunity for our students to connect with students from Brewarrina and beyond, and learn first-hand about rural Australia and Aboriginal culture. The local people are keen for their children to visit GPCC and learn about life on the Central Coast, see the ocean (some for the first time) and have ready access to Sydney.
The pandemic has brought many plans to a halt, but we believe we should press on with this idea and use it to strengthen what we are doing in GPCC. The way we will need to deliver education in Brewarrina will challenge us to re-think how we do things at Green Point. In this way we can grow stronger together.
Again, let me remind you that this school will be independent, having its own funding and being self-supporting, so while GPCC Ltd may contribute a start-up loan, it will be repaid with interest and not be a drain on our own resources or plans for the future.
During the term break, Michael Lowbridge the Business Manager and I visited our school Architects to progress work on our Master Plan for the GPCC site. We are excited at the ideas that have already been floated about renovations to existing facilities and additions to the site to improve what we have already. I will share the Master Plan with you once it is finalised.

Uniform is an important part of demonstrating that we belong together and represents who we are as a College. Thank you for partnering with us as we teach our students the importance of respecting these uniform guidelines and being mindful of what they wear to school each day.
Sports Uniform
Most classes have two designated sports days each week. This means that for ALL other days, students should be in their formal uniform. If students are in their formal uniform, then they are required to wear black leather school shoes as part of this uniform. Sneakers/sports shoes should only be worn with their sports uniform.
Head of School Awards
Congratulations to the following students who achieved the Head of School Award for Week 2, Term 4:
Ryder G, KDL; Savannah G, KP; Luca Y, 1G; Beatrix C, 1PH; Isabelle A, 2G; Gabriella S, 2J; Lachlan B, 3B; George W, 3K; Isabell T, 4B; Zain F. 4M; Madeleine S, 5D; Sophia B, 5H; Ayla D, 5P; Michael M, 6D; Oliver B, 6M and Imogen H, 6T.
Swimming Kindergarten and Year 1
Last week was our first trip to the swimming pool with Kindergarten and Year 1 for their swimming lessons. Kindergarten will be attending each Tuesday and Year 1 each Monday for the next six weeks. Please ensure your child has their towel, swimmers and plastic bag for wet clothes each week.
Samaritan's Purse – Operation Christmas Child
Congratulations to our Primary students on the collection of 177 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes this year. 5D were very excited to assist in packing the Christmas shoeboxes into the Samaritan’s Purse truck on Thursday morning. The students prayed for the boxes going to the Philippines and for the children receiving them. They heard stories about children receiving the shoeboxes in developing countries by the Samaritan’s Purse volunteer and Mrs Collins, who has taken groups of GPCC students to Vietnam and Cambodia to distribute OCC shoeboxes.
Every year Samaritan’s Purse delights millions of children around the world by delivering shoebox gifts through the Operation Christmas Child project. As exciting as it is to bring the joy of Christmas to these children, the story does not end with the shoebox – that is just the beginning.
After receiving shoebox gifts, children are invited back to participate in their discipleship program, “The Greatest Journey”. Through this 12 lesson course, which includes Bible stories and Scripture memorisation, they learn how to follow Christ in their daily lives as they share Him with friends and family. More than 23.3 million children have enrolled in this program since 2009.
Thank you to all the families that were involved in packing a shoebox this year.

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary
It is now week 3 and the HSC is well underway. Please pray for our Y12s, for their health and motivation as they continue undertaking these exams.
We continue to look at our Graduate Profile in our assembly video this week. We discussed the idea of being socially active and that we called to be practical in actually doing something about the wellbeing of those who are truly marginalised in our world. We want to give our students as many opportunities to do little things that make the lives of others better. We are starting with supporting the “Share the Dignity” program. Please see the details below and please support this initiative.
“It’s in the Bag”
During November the College will be participating in “It’s in the Bag”, an initiative from Share the Dignity organisation. This initiative aims to provide hygiene and toiletry essentials for women in need in our community.
Throughout the month we will be collecting toiletry essentials for teens, Mums and Bubs and women in need (see flyer for suggestions). If you would like to participate you may choose to provide individual items from the list, or place items in a new or pre-loved handbag or backpack. You may want to donate as an individual, as a family, as a church, as a class/year group. Collection boxes are located in the Main Office.

Bless you for blessing others in this practical way,
Jane McLarty and Michelle Molkentin

Year 10 History Incursion
On Tuesday and Wednesday last week (20 and 21 October), students in Year 10 History had the privilege of seeing a presentation from one of Australia’s most widely respected Rock'n Roll historians, Bernie Howitt.
Students were given the presentation as part of their Pop Culture unit in History. Bernie discussed the history of pop culture after the Second World War and then captured the second half of the 20th century in Australia through ten songs.
The highlight of the afternoon was learning about the connections between The Beatles’ 1964 tour of Australia and their influence on The Easy Beats, the first Australian rock band to have a number one hit outside of Australia. It was a wonderful learning experience for our students a good dose of nostalgia for the teachers in attendance.
Textbooks for new Year 12 Cohort
Green Point Christian College is pleased to announce our engagement with Box of Books for the provision of digital and physical education resources for the 2021 school year. Box of Books is a proudly Australian owned company that works hard to keep leading schools at the forefront of digital learning.
Please see the video below on how Box of Books works and how we will work together to support your student’s ongoing educational needs.
Box of Books - Service Overview
Parents will also have the option to supplement existing textbooks with a discounted digital license. Some families may already have the school prescribed texts in hard copy either through siblings who have completed the subject in an earlier year or through the purchase of the text separately to Box of Books. Where this is the case, you can opt for the provision of the digital version of the text on Box of Books and this can be purchased for a discounted cost.
Box of Books looks forward to supporting students' learning through their world leading digital platform and 100% COVID safe delivery service for texts and physical resources for school families.
Steps to order:
- Visit https://shop.boxofbooks.com.au to create your parent/guardian account
- Add each student, nominating their school and Year group
- Select the items you wish to purchase from the booklist shown
- Use the checkout to organise postage direct to your nominated address and payment
For further assistance, please see this short informative video guide on How to Purchase Books or contact the Box of Books team through the in-app support function (located at the bottom right corner of the shop).
Student Opal Cards
From January 2021 onwards, there will be a number of School Opal cards expiring, as the physical card has reached its lifespan.
These are cards for students who will be in Years 8 to 12 in 2021, and only those Opal cards which have not been replaced in the last five years.
Impacted students and/or their parent/carer will be contacted directly by Transport for NSW via email or post. They will be asked to confirm their details online in order for a new School Opal card to be sent to the correct postal address in time for the new school year.
If contacted by Transport for NSW, details should be submitted online by 1 December 2020 at the latest. Affected students who do not confirm their details in time will have a new School Opal card posted to the address Transport NSW has on file.

SECONDARY ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
It is with great pleasure to inform you that we will be holding our Secondary Athletics Carnival this term at Mingara for Years 7-11 students. It will be held on Friday 6 November in Week 4. As this is our first Secondary sport event for over two terms, it will be one in which I expect all students to be heavily involved, participating in as many events and scoring as many points as possible for their House.
The carnival will begin at 8:45am and conclude by 2:00pm. Students are expected to arrive by 8:30am. There will be buses provided for those students requiring transport. These will leave the College at 8:45am and return by 3:00pm (note that students on the bus will miss the 800m event). Parents will need to indicate via Tours if their child requires transport on the Bus.
This is a compulsory event so all students are expected to be in attendance at the carnival. On arrival, they will need to have their names marked off and repeat this as they leave at the end of the day after the Relays.
Parents will be able to drop off/pick up their child from the venue, however due to restrictions on numbers, parents will not be permitted to attend.
Students will need to bring their own recess and lunch and wear their house shirts. The canteen will be open to purchase food or drinks (all sold individually wrapped).

PRIMARY CRICKET TEAM
Our Senior Boys Primary Cricket Team will be competing in the first round of the CSSA Cricket Knockout. They will be travelling up to Singleton to play a round robin match against Belmont Christian School and Carinya Christian School.
Each game will be a 15 over match and the overall winner on the day will progress to the Final against a Sydney-based school.
We wish our boys all the best for the day.
Facebook Usage
The College utilises Facebook groups for Kindergarten through to Year 9 to help families share information in support of their child's education at GPCC. Overall, these groups are a valuable resource for our community, but we would just like to remind participants in these groups of the College Facebook Guidelines which are as follows:
- This is a closed group and all members of the Grade Facebook page must be a parent or primary carer for a student in that Grade.
- The Grade Facebook group should only be used for the communication of information between those parents/carers. The page should not be used for personal announcements, venting or gain.
- The administrator/Grade parent for each Grade will monitor all posts and retain the right to remove posts if they are or appear to be damaging to the reputation of the College, its staff or other members of the College community or as instructed by the College. Please refer to Parent Guardian Visitor Code of Conduct for more explanation.
- Any families who leave the College will be removed from the Facebook group.
- No photographs should be posted without the permission of all persons in those photos.
The GPCC Facebook Page is also a primary communication device supporting the sharing of information with our College and wider community. We remind current parents and carers that comments on the Green Point Christian College Facebook page need to adhere to the Code of Conduct for Parent Guardian Visitor (full policy available on the College website). The relevant section covering Social Media and other Public Forums as follows:
- Social media and other Public Forums should not be used to criticise or denigrate others in the College community. The College reserves the right to request material publicly posted about students, staff, parents or the College that is inaccurate, confrontational, critical, offensive or disrespectful to be taken down. Likewise, the posting of photos of other children without consent is inappropriate. Matters that include libel or slander may be dealt with at a higher level.
If your comment or post is at risk of breaching these Guidelines or the Code of Conduct, please contact the College direct to discuss the matter. Our experience is that Social Media platforms rarely help resolve issues that are best discussed in person or with the relevant people. Thank you.
Story Time
With the easing of restrictions, we can start Story Time again this term. Parents will need to register their interest with Mrs Nicole van Wyk: nvanwyk@gpcc.nsw.edu.au, as we can only have a limited number of adults in attendance. Children starting Kindergarten in 2021 at GPCC will be given preference. As well as stories and a craft, we will do some phonology to aid school readiness. Story Time started last week, being Week 2, so we look forward to seeing you here.
Parent Lounge Details
The College has a legal requirement to keep our records up to date.
Please review your details on Parent Lounge to ensure that all your information is correct. This includes medical information on your child/children (only complete the immunisation question if your child is not immunised).
Please note: Should you require both parents/carers to receive SMS notifications, please tick the appropriate boxes.
Thank you.
Munchery News
We have introduced a new nourish bowl on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
You have three choices of the protein topping, flame grilled chicken, haloumi or falafels, all served with a zesty herb dressing.
