Survey Request
As we seek to continue making improvements to our school, we utilise different approaches including surveys. We are members of a world-wide network of Christian schools called the Association of Christian Schools International, based in Colorado Springs, USA. They have developed an instrument called the Flourishing School Culture Instrument which utilises research done over some years on what constitutes a flourishing school.
I am inviting you to participate with us in undertaking this survey to help us identify areas of strength and areas for improvement. Follow this link to an explanatory letter and follow the highlighted link in it to do the survey.
Bullying
Last week I wrote about the challenge of bullying in our society and school. In thinking some more about this issue, I came across someone talking about how often a bully is covering up their own insecurities and fears by being aggressive. I think we all recognise this is often the case. Sometimes too, students will bully or be unkind to another who is desperate to join their group. Belonging to a group is very important to teenagers in particular, but also to all children. If the group does not want to admit the child, they can often turn on them and push them away, repeatedly, if the child persists, and this often ends up being a bullying situation.
Remember that bullying is widely defined as – when someone or a group of people with more power repeatedly and intentionally cause hurt or harm to another person or group of people who feel helpless to respond. Bullying can continue over time, is often hidden from adults and will probably continue if no action is taken.
Bullying is not:
- Single episodes of social rejection or dislike;
- Single episodes of acts of nastiness or spite;
- Random acts of aggression or intimidation;
- Mutual arguments, disagreements or fights.
None of these things are acceptable and as a school we work to respond appropriately to all such incidents. A parent writing to me in relation to my comments last week said, “I am not, as I write, sure how the school goes forward but a brave and radical approach is probably required …”
I agree, and we are looking into the use of an anti-bullying program to help us ensure that our school culture is strong enough to minimise bullying (and all unkind behaviour) and helps students to be different. But we need to do this together. You need to monitor your child’s behaviour and ensure they know that unkindness and the misuse of power over another is not acceptable in your family or our school.
If we can make real progress in this area, we will have together succeeded in something very worthwhile.

Punctuality
Arriving to school on time is not only great in establishing habits of good time management and organisation, it also assists students to feel settled and ready for the day. Please be mindful that Primary school begins at 8:55am and students need to be on site well before then to ensure they have unpacked and are ready for the day.
Head of School Awards
Congratulations to the following students who achieved the Head of School Award for Week 4, Term 4:
Jack B, KDL; Harrison L, KP; Luca Y, 1G; Amarah F, 1PH; Dylan B, 2G; Grace V, 2J; Michael H, 3B; Charlotte A, 3K; Elizabeth V, 4B; Joshua F, 4M; Benjamin T, 5D; Rory W, 5H; Noah D, 5P; Roche d, 6D; Morgan E, 6M and Lane D, 6T.
School Surf Safety Days
As part of the PDHPE curriculum, students are required to learn about safety in a variety of contexts. Here on the Coast there is no better place to do that than on the beach. Students from across Primary took part in a Surf Safety day at Terrigal beach throughout the week. Students practiced knee board and rescue skills as well as increasing their fitness through relays and sand sports run by Surf Life Saving NSW. A fantastic opportunity for our students.
Due to extreme weather the Year 4’s excursion has been postponed to 18 November.
Musica Viva
Last week students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participated in a virtual music nncursion with a concert from “Little Big Band” Adam Hall and the Velvet Players.
Singer/trumpeter Adam Hall brought his foot-stomping, hip-wiggling, shoulder-shaking “little big band” to GPCC for a virtual music workshop. Students were taken on a tour of the classic Rhythm & Blues of the 1940s and 50s and inspired by soul icons James Brown, Ray Charles and Harry Connick Jr.
So amazing to think the band were located in Perth and we still managed to have a live concert right here on the Central Coast.
Orientation Day - New Students 2021
This Thursday 12 November will be Orientation Day for all new students in Primary commencing 2021.
We have had many new enrolments for 2021 and these students will spend the day getting to know our campus and making new friends.
We will also be joined again on Thursday morning by our Kindergarten students for their second Get Set Go day.
Last week was a HUGE success as we welcomed our 60 youngest students to the site and we look forward to another successful day this week.
Parent sessions for both Kindergarten Orientation and new students will be posted on our website as parents are not permitted on site at this time.

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary
Character is one of our major focuses at this College and is such a big issue. Our society teaches that if you can get away with something, then it is okay. What a warped view of truth and honesty. This warps our children’s character. The Bible says to let “your yes be yes, and your no be no”. It is not an optional suggestion or when it is convenient for us, but all the time. Lying is never acceptable and if we want our children to be adults of character, we must teach it now.
New Year 8 Advisor for 2021
It gives me pleasure to announce that the new Year 8 Advisor will be Mr Jon Oppel. I am really excited to have Jon as part of our student welfare team. Jon has a real heart for students and will care for your children in the years ahead.
Signing in and out of School
It is really important if a student is to arrive late to school that they sign in at the Student Window so that we have a clear picture of who is here at the College. If a student needs to leave the College for any reason, they must sign out at the Student Window. This must be done even if they are being picked up by a parent.
To sign out early, your child must have written parental permission that clearly states the purpose for the early departure.
Year 11 must sign in at the office if they have a Study Period in Period 1.
Please note that students need to be in class if they are to perform to the ability which they are capable in their studies.
Summer is Here
Summer weather will be here soon and wearing of hats is a wise choice for all students to make if they are in the sun.
It is compulsory to have a GPCC hat at school every day. It is the responsibility of students to be sun wise and look after their skin. The use of sunscreen and hats is a primary defence against skin cancer. Please encourage your child to make a wise decision in regard to their skin.
“It’s in the Bag”
During November the College will be participating in “It’s in the Bag”, an initiative from Share the Dignity organisation. This initiative aims to provide hygiene and toiletry essentials for women in need in our community.
Throughout the month we will be collecting toiletry essentials for teens, mums and bubs, and women in need (see flyer for suggestions). If you would like to participate, you may choose to provide individual items from the list, or place items in a new or pre-loved handbag or backpack. You may want to donate as an individual, as a family, as a church, as a class or Year group. Collection boxes are located in the Administration Office.

Bless you for blessing others in this practical way.

Weet Bix Wednesdays
Our Secondary Prefects are into their third week of this new service initiative, providing breakfast to Secondary School students who may have missed this important meal of the day and building community.
Student Opal Cards
From January 2021 onwards, there will be a number of School Opal cards expiring, as the physical card has reached its lifespan.
These are cards for students who will be in Years 8 to 12 in 2021, and only those Opal cards which have not been replaced in the last five years.
Impacted students and/or their parent/carer will be contacted directly by Transport for NSW via email or post. They will be asked to confirm their details online in order for a new School Opal card to be sent to the correct postal address in time for the new school year.
If contacted by Transport for NSW, details should be submitted online by 1 December 2020 at the latest. Affected students who do not confirm their details in time will have a new School Opal card posted to the address Transport NSW has on file.
HSC Students to Have COVID-19 Test Results Faster
Students taking the 2020 HSC exams will now have their COVID-19 test results fast tracked through pathology. They simply need to advise the nurse or doctor doing the test that they are HSC students. Find your nearest testing clinics:

SURF FUN DAYS
Last week our Primary classes spent the day at Terrigal Beach learning about surf safety, in and out of the water.
Each day, they were placed into three different groups and on a rotational basis, participated in the following informative activities:
- Rescue Tube: learnt how to tie a rescue tube around someone struggling in the water and then pulling them to safety
- Board Skills: catching waves in on a nipper’s board
- Sand Games: playing beach volleyball and relays, working together as a team
At the end of the day, students had a big relay challenge against the lifeguards, passing a ball between partners to get passed them.

SECONDARY ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Our Secondary Athletics Carnival went ahead last Friday at Mingara. Though the day began with some light rain, the weather cleared and it was a great day for competing in a range of track and field events.
The competition was as fierce as ever, with a number of records broken. These superb performances are just a credit of the talent at our school and the impressive effort by these athletes.
The Age Champions and winning House for this carnival will be announced in the coming weeks.
CSSA STATE PRIMARY CRICKET
Our Senior Primary Boys Cricket team play their first game on Wednesday at Singleton against some very strong teams from Belmont and Carinya Christian Schools. This will be a great test for our boys who are an experienced team and love their cricket.
CENTRAL COAST BASKETBALL CHALLENGE
Our Primary Basketball teams are having trials over the next week to prepare for the Central Coast Basketball Challenge. Once teams have been finalised, they will compete on the following days:
- Years 3 and 4 Boys/Girls Thursday 19 November
- Years 5 and 6 Boys/Girls Friday 20 November
CSSA STATE BASKETBALL
Our Senior Boys and Girls teams will compete in the CSSA State Primary Basketball Championships on Monday 23 November at the Hills Basketball Stadium. This will be an exciting and challenging opportunity for our keen and talented basketball players in Years 5 and 6 to test themselves against some of the toughest teams in the State.
In 2019, both our teams performed exceptionally well in their respective competitions, with the Senior Girls even making it to the Final to only just lose in a very close game.
We wish our teams all the best for this competition.
