Watching the TV news each night, I am increasingly amazed at the sense of hopelessness one can be left with after an hour of gloom and doom reporting. It sometimes seems that the media go out of their way to assure us that around every corner lies increased risk of disease, death and disaster – in fact we are lucky we are still alive! No wonder young people suffer from anxiety, engage in risk-taking behaviours and suffer depression at alarming rates. Without hope, what is the point of life and we are left wondering how we will get through the day.
Much research has been done on the value and importance of hope for human beings. In an article by Shorey and Snyder from the University of Kansas, they report the following: "What enables a young person to succeed in the classroom? Contrary to popular belief, intelligence and ability are not the answers (Dweck, 1999). Sometimes the brightest students fail to achieve in school or realize their potential, whereas other less talented individuals thrive and even excel in the face of adversity. The difference between these two kinds of students may lie in their levels of hope. Hope (Snyder et.al., 1991) is defined as the process of thinking about one’s goals, along with the motivation to move towards those goals (agency) and the ways to achieve those goals (pathways). Hope, in this sense is not an emotion but rather a dynamic, cognitive, motivational process. Emotions follow cognition in the process of goal directed thinking (Snyder, 1994)."
The authors go on to say, “… high-hope people experience less anxiety specifically in test-taking situations."
Kirsten Weir, writing for the American Psychological Association (2013) and quoting Lopez says, “Lopez describes three basic steps for building hope. The first is a process he calls 'future-casting' — envisioning a specific future goal in a way that makes it come alive."
The next step, Lopez says, is to work toward your goal — in other words, create the pathways that are central to Snyder's model of hope ...
The final step is planning for contingencies. Lopez has found most hopeful people tend to see multiple solutions to a problem, while the hopeless plan only for the best-case scenario and come up with just one or two pathways to their target, Lopez says, "You have to come up with many ways to overcome those obstacles."
We can see the necessity and value of hope but what do we put our hope in? So often we are encouraged to put it in ourselves but then we fail and our hope is shattered. Or we put it in other people or organisations who then let us down. For Christians, we put our hope in the accounts in the Scriptures of a faithful and powerful God who is able to make things happen and who never fails. We put our hope in the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe.
The Psalmist writes – "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God. (42:5)". Our hope is not just a future hope of ultimate restoration, but a present hope of God being with us in the turmoil of life and securing a future for us.
At GPCC, we trust that our students come to understand this and to put their hope in God who then enables them to step forward confidently to fulfill their purpose.

Year 4 – History Incursion
This year has pushed the creative boundaries for all our regular activities. Year 4 were not able to visit the Hyde Park Barracks, instead the Barracks came to them through a series of workshops and virtual interactives. Students dressed the part and were involved in a variety of discussions and activities, focusing on early settlement and colonisation.

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary
Coming to the end of all things can result in a dropping away of effort and focus, especially when major activities have finished.
We want our students to remain focused right up until the end of the year, even though many have finished their final assessment tasks or exams.
Every teacher will be continuing to teach the skills needed to make their progression the easiest possible for all students, no matter the Year level.
Year 11 come to the completion of the first quarter of their HSC work, so for them there is no transition.
Please, when your child says, “We did nothing at school,” or “We only watched a movie”, remember that the focus we have is to continue education right up to the end of the year.
It is more than likely a misunderstanding of what the purpose of each activity is for or maybe it is a signing out by your child as the end of the year approaches.
Let's finish strong …
Purchasing Textbooks for Year 11, 2021
Parents of current Year 10 students are now able to purchase textbooks for next year through Box of Books.
Box of Books is a proudly Australian owned company that works hard to keep leading schools at the forefront of digital learning.
Please see the video below on how Box of Books works and how we will work together to support your student’s ongoing educational needs.

Parents will also have the option to supplement existing textbooks with a discounted digital license. Some families may already have the school prescribed texts in hard copy either through siblings who have completed the subject in an earlier year or through the purchase of the text separately to Box of Books. Where this is the case, you can opt for the provision of the digital version of the text on Box of Books and this can be purchased for a discounted cost.
Box of Books looks forward to supporting students' learning through their world leading digital platform and 100% COVID safe delivery service for texts and physical resources for school families.

“It’s in the Bag”
During November, the College will be participating in “It’s in the Bag”, an initiative from Share the Dignity organisation. This initiative aims to provide hygiene and toiletry essentials for women in need in our community.
Throughout the month we will be collecting toiletry essentials for teens, mums and bubs, and women in need (see flyer for suggestions). If you would like to participate, you may choose to provide individual items from the list, or place items in a new or pre-loved handbag or backpack. You may want to donate as an individual, as a family, as a church, as a class or Year group. Collection boxes are located in the Administration Office.

From January 2021 onwards, there will be a number of School Opal cards expiring, as the physical card has reached its lifespan.
These are cards for students who will be in Years 8 to 12 in 2021, and only those Opal cards which have not been replaced in the last five years.
Impacted students and/or their parent/carer will be contacted directly by Transport for NSW via email or post. They will be asked to confirm their details online in order for a new School Opal card to be sent to the correct postal address in time for the new school year.
If contacted by Transport for NSW, details should be submitted online by 1 December 2020 at the latest. Affected students who do not confirm their details in time will have a new School Opal card posted to the address Transport NSW has on file.

CSSA STATE PRIMARY CRICKET
Our Primary Senior Boys Cricket team competed in the first round of the CSSA State Primary Cricket Competition. They played two games at Singleton against Carinya and Belmont Christian Schools.
It was a very warm day to play cricket but the boys, who were very enthusiastic, had a wonderful day in the field and batting on the pitch.
In the first game against Carinya, our boys were sent in to bat and made a solid 54 runs off 15 overs. Sam V top scored with 13no, supported well by Jacob on 10no.
Carinya went in to bat and Green Point put the pressure on early, with accurate bowling and solid fielding. They continued to bowl a good line and length, taking a couple of wickets but unfortunately his was not enough to stop Carinya reaching the score. Charlie had strong stats in bowling, with 1/7 off 3 overs, again supported well by his opening partner Jacob, who was 1/9 off his 3.
Our boys needed to win their second match to give themselves a chance of progressing through to the next round, so they came out swinging (literally) in the second game against Belmont.
We were sent in to bat and had an exceptional opening partnership between Charlie and Kyne of 50 runs. Charlie finishing with an unbeaten 30 runs, retiring to give the next batter their chance. Kyne was given out LBW for 16 runs but the damage had already been done, with our boys cruising to an excellent total of 80 runs.
Defending this total would all come down to the bowlers. They needed to bowl a straight line and pitch the ball up to have a chance of stopping Belmont from reaching the required amount.
Again, our bowlers were amazing, pitching the ball perfectly, making it difficult for the batters to play scoring shots. After 2 quick dismissals, Belmont were in trouble at 2/1, and with an amazing catch by Mitch at Mid Off, the score became 3/8. Belmont put up a last minute fight but our boys held on, limiting them to only 64 runs. It was a dominant performance and one of which the boys were very proud. Sam had the superb figures of 2/7 off 3 overs, strongly supported by Charlie with 1/1 (off 3 overs), Fidel 1/3 (off 2 overs) and Jacob 1/1 (off 2 overs).
It is interesting to note how superb our bowling was. This is such a credit to not only the bowlers and their efforts to bowl good line and length, but also hats off to our wicket keepers (Jacob and Kyne) who dove for everything, trying to stop anything coming their way. In each of the games, here is a quick run-down on the Sundries:
