I want to address the challenging issue of school cost this week. You have received a letter from the College recently about the fees for next year. The unpleasant news no-one really wants to hear that fees are rising. We gave you that news in the letter.
In Australia, we are privileged to have a system in which Independent schools like ours, get government funding. The amount we get from Federal and State Governments is insufficient to run the school, so we also have to charge a per student fee. These two are our only real source of income so as costs rise, we need either Government support to rise or fee levels to rise.
Schools like ours are set up as not-for-profit companies which means that no-one outside of the school receives (or may receive) any benefit should the school generate a surplus of income over expenditure. Board members are volunteers, the sponsoring Church gets no dividend or any income from the school’s operation. This does not mean we do not generate a surplus. We need to do that to fund future capital developments such as carparking, major building renovations, the construction of new buildings, the purchase of more land etc.
In the Independent school sector, there are benchmarks we can measure ourselves against to ensure we are operating in a financially sensible way. These include pupil/teacher ratios, debt servicing capacity, total salaries as a percentage of income, and so on. We need to stay within the industry guidelines to ensure we can operate effectively and for most of the benchmarks we are within the industry standard.
For some years now GPCC has suffered a gradual drop in enrolments and this has a significant impact on the pupil/teacher ratio and the size of salaries as a percentage of income. Of course, when student numbers drop, we look to decrease staffing but sometimes the drop is spread thinly across many year levels such that it is very difficult to remove a teacher. Class numbers may be lower than optimal but not low enough to combine classes. We have wrestled with this issue and its impact on the budget and therefore our capacity to produce a surplus to allow us to progress capital investment.
I am pleased to report that enrolments are now growing again and the ratios are improving but some are not yet where they should be. GPCC is approaching its 40 year anniversary and many of our buildings are getting older and in need of major refurbishment and even replacement. Some of our facilities are now inadequate and have been for some time so we need to ensure we can fund these projects.
The surplus we require is not huge. In fact, if we get to a 5% surplus of income over expenditure we would be happy. We are aiming for something close to that for 2021 and have trimmed all possible expenditure to help achieve that. GPCC is not short of cash to fund daily operations so we are not concerned about the school finances but are trying to be good stewards.
There is never a good time to raise fees and given the situation with COVID, the Board has been careful to ensure that the rise is minimal. Government funding is actually reducing for us over the next few years because it is now tied directly to an estimate of the parents’ capacity to pay. According to the Government, in general, our parent body is able to afford higher fees so they will reduce their contribution accordingly!
Finally, we continue to explore alternative sources of school income, so that we do not have to continue to raise fees to cover ever increasing costs. This is not easy for a school, but something we are committed to exploring.
Thank you for your on-going commitment to us as a school. Be assured we seek to be wise in our spending so that we can provide a quality education that is as affordable as possible.

Change of start time 2021 to 8:45am
Research suggests that promoting movement and activity in young children can help increase memory, perception, language, attention, emotion and even decision making. When language is combined with movement, learning increases 90 percent.
In an effort to increase the movement and physical activity in the school day we will be introducing a formal outside Crunch/Sip n Go time for our students. This will be a supervised ten minute moving time and five minute Crunch n Sip time scheduled for 10:00am each day.
To cater for this in our timetable we will be starting the school day at 8:45am in line with the start time for Secondary School from the first day of 2021.

Year 10 finish up this week with their Dinner Dance. A few are heading in different pathways that will lead them away from GPCC. We wish them the utmost best and will miss them.
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.
The coming holidays are an important time for Year 10 students who have chosen to continue to complete their HSC studies at GPCC.
It needs to be a time of refreshment but also setting new goals and aspiration for their studies. It is a time to work out study routines and areas to work on before they start their HSC studies.
Thank you to all staff, especially Mr Newell for co-ordinating and navigating safe end of year activities with extra restrictions placed due to the pandemic.
Year 10 Peer Support
Year 10 students have undertaken Peer Support Training for a service role in the College next year, helping our Year 7 students to settle into Secondary School life.

“It’s in the Bag”
Throughout November the College participated in “It’s in the Bag”, an initiative from Share the Dignity organisation. This initiative provides hygiene and toiletry essentials for women, Mums and Bubs and Teens in need in our community. The response has been overwhelming! The College will be donating 45 bags brimming with toiletries and little luxuries. Donations flooded in from individuals, families, churches, class groups, year groups and Devotions groups. Thank you to the Year 7 and Year 8 girls who helped sort through the bags and the Year 12 girls who made cards to go into each one. May God bless these bags and the women who receive them.

CSSA STATE PRIMARY BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Last week, our Primary Basketball teams competed in the Central Coast Basketball Challenge and they had an amazing day. The Senior Boys won two out of three games, with the girls undefeated throughout the day, taking out their final match as if it was the Final.
With such an impressive performance at this competition, both teams were looking forward to travelling to Sydney to compete in the CSSA State Primary Basketball Championships. This was a tough competition with the Christian Schools across NSW, and one competition that we came very close to winning last year, with the girls just going down in the Final in double extra time, by just two points.
Our boys started strongly, playing Northcross in their first game, and with good teamwork and accurate shooting, raced to an early lead and eventually won 20-12.
Their second match was against Northern Beaches, who always field a strong team in any sport. This year would be no different, and though our boys were valiant in their efforts, Northern Beaches led early and kept piling on the pressure. We made a comeback in the second half but just couldn’t claw back the difference, going down 23-6. Though the score line was a difference of 17, the game was much closer, with inaccuracy of shooting letting us down.
The Shire would be their final opponent and our boys wanted to finish strongly. They attacked early and made a solid start, with good shooting and crisp passing. Once we took the lead, we kept piling on more points and won comfortably in the end, taking the game 26-10.
Though we won two out of three matches, we unfortunately did not progress to the Semi Finals. We did however, make it to the Playoff match for those teams that finished second in their pool.
This game was the best game of the day. Both teams were strong in defence and attack, and with the scores even throughout the game, it was going to be a fight to the finish.
With 20 seconds on the clock, we were down by one point. With quick passing and determination, Charlie pushed through the line and had a shot and got it in! We were now in front 14-13 and held on to the final buzzer.
It was a superb ending for the boys who though not making make the Semis, still showed the focus and intensity in every match, to win it in the final 20 seconds. It was a great feeling!
At the end of the day, Oxford Falls won the title, just beating Northern Beaches by four points. For our boys to know that they were very competitive against a team who nearly won the entire competition is another example of what a great bunch of boys they are.
On the Girls side of the competition, our girls were very keen to make it to the Semi Finals. They had some challenging teams in their pool, so they needed to “bring it” from the opening whistle.
Their first game was the start they wanted, again proving to the other teams how incredibly talented the team is, beating Northcross easily 38-2. Northern Beaches, was their second opponent, but they couldn’t keep up with the speed, agility and skills of our girls as they cruised to another hard-fought victory 18-2. Their final pool match was close in the first half against the Shire, with the scores locked at 4-4, until GPCC put the pedal down and took hold of the match, winning 24-6.
Making the Semi Finals is one thing; performing when it counts is something else. Our girls were looking good, heading into their Semi against Charlton, though they needed to fire in this match.
From the start our girls attacked, pushing the passes to create opportunities and defending as strong as possible. They led early and as they have done in every game so far, they did not want to relinquish that lead, eventually winning 24-0. It was truly a dominant performance and one that was a statement for the Finals.
This Final was tough against Maitland the defending champions and our girls were going to have to bring their A-Game.
From the opening tip off, it was on! Both teams were determined to take the upper hand and score some quick baskets. Defence was important; passing was essential; accurate shooting was required; but teamwork was the difference!
GPCC has been amazing with their teamwork, both at this competition and at the Central Coast Challenge last week. Their teamwork is why they were undefeated and again, they were going to show Maitland why they deserve to be Champions.
We took an early lead through their teamwork and increased this lead with this continued focus and drive. After being six points up, the girls knew that there was still a lot of time left in the game, so their zone defence had to be perfect and it was! They cut down attacking raids and blocked many shot attempts.
The second half was just as intense as the first, and with the scores still close, it was going to be up to the team who wanted it more.
Green Point has never won the CSSA State; we went down last year in the Final by two points, so this year, we wanted it!
Our girls definitely stepped it up in the second half and gave everything they had. Mr Vartan, their coach who had expertly devised a plan for the girls, had executed it perfectly and now, wanted to finish it off. They were exhausted by their effort by the final whistle but in the end, it was worth it as our girls won 12-4. They won the CSSA State Basketball Championships and were the Champions.
It was such a well-deserved win for the girls. Both the boys and girls teams had performed so exceptionally. They had tried hard all day and had such superb results because of their focus, determination and intensity.
Congratulations to both teams for yet another great performance; and well done to the girls who are now State Champions!

Coast Shelter Christmas Appeal December 2020
GPCC and GPBC are normally able to fundraise for Coast Shelter through our Community Carols event. However, with the Carols not able to go ahead this year due to COVID restrictions we want to highlight a couple of ways you can still support the vital work of Coast Shelter.
The best way to give is via the online appeal page here:
If you can give in this way, we invite you to collect a Coast Shelter Christmas Gift Card from the College reception. We only have 40 of these Gift Cards available and once they are distributed, we will not be able to supply more, so get in quick.
Another way to give is through the Coast Shelter Hamper Wheelie Bin. This is also located in the GPCC Admin Reception during office hours, with Coles bags available to go shopping. This will be available from December 1 to 9, with Coast Shelter coming to collect all the good donated on 10 December.
Please follow the link below for the Coast Shelter Gift Guide:
Thank you for your generous support of Coast Shelter.
New Entrance Way and Carpark Opening
It is exciting to see that the remaining works on the new entrance and exit ways look like they will finally be completed this month. The final occupation certificate will then need to be obtained before we can operate the new driveway.
Given we are in the last two weeks of term we envisage the operation will now commence for the start of 2021. This will enable us to provide some clear instructions on traffic flow with an updated Carpark Procedure and Traffic Management Plan.
Thank you for your patience this year, and we are trusting it has all been worth it as we enjoy the additional options in the year ahead.

Rotary Christmas Trees
Rotary Kincumber will be selling Christmas trees from the Avoca Drive bus shelter at the front of our College on the weekends of 5 - 6 December and 12 - 13 December, until sold out.
