This week we have a Commendation Assembly for our Secondary students. At these times we acknowledge publicly those who have attained highly and those who have put in a high effort.
There is always a tension in acknowledging high achievement because so often we recognise it as coming from a particular gifting a student has which many others do not. In this we might say there is no level playing field. In spite of our culture telling us that we can achieve anything we want if we only set our mind to it or strive hard enough, the reality is, we mostly cannot do that.
However, even someone with a particular ability, still needs to apply that to their work in order to achieve highly. So, we always want to acknowledge effort as well as achievement. Someone with significant ability still needs to put in some effort. Those who have no special ability in an area, should not think they do not need to try, they should.
The Bible contains a parable of Jesus that speaks of a master giving three of his servants varying amounts of money and expecting them to do something with it. Two did and doubled their money, but the third hid his in the ground and returned the original amount to the master. We learn a number of things from Jesus’ teaching here.
Firstly, that God gives us our abilities and they are not equal. Some appear to have a greater ability in an area than others. This is OK.
Secondly, we are expected to put our ability to work and do whatever we can with it.
Thirdly, God is not pleased with those who do not use their ability, no matter how limited it may appear.
As a school, we accept that our students vary greatly in ability in academics, sport, music, visual art etc. That is fine. What we want them to do is take whatever ability they have – great or small – and use it well. Some will achieve high academic or sporting or artistic outcomes. Most will not. That too is fine. What matters is that everyone does their best and works hard even with only a small amount of ability in any area.
We often have a lower expectation of our ability than actually exists, so unless we really put in a good effort, we may never really know what we can achieve. Students often give up before they start because they compare themselves to others and, knowing (or guessing) that they cannot match their ability, don’t even try.
As school and home work together on this issue with them, we can help them to see the importance of doing their best even in the areas where they feel they have no ability. Then they may surprise themselves at how far they do get. So, we acknowledge high achievement and effort together as both being worthy of recognition.

Year 6 Canberra Trip
Our Year 6 students have recently undertaken an education tour of the National Capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the National Capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist in covering the cost of this experience for our students, the Australian Government contributes funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate Program. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and subsidises the cost of these wonderful experiences.
Highlights of the excursion for the students included – Parliament House, Questacon, Australian Institute of Sport and the Mint.

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary
Sometimes when we find things difficult in work or we are struggling in relationships, the easiest approach is to blame others.
The most difficult approach is looking at ourselves and seeing how our attitude and actions could change to improve the situation.
Taking responsibility for ourselves and what we do is tough, because it then actually requires us to take action to change and to have ownership of our approach and decisions.
Often it is only ourselves we can change no matter how much we want to change someone or something else.
Lateness to School
There are a lot of students arriving late to school. It is so important to arrive to school in time for Period 1 and begin the day with a positive start so that rolls can be marked.
Please help students set those alarms early so they do not miss out on any education.
Students need to get to school on time and stay at school all day. Please ensure that your child is here at 8.45am. If they are late, they need to sign in at the Student Window.
Year 12 "Together" Event from Mr Masters
On Wednesday Mrs McKay, Mrs Gavin and myself ran the Year 12 "Together" event for Year 12 students offsite at a private residence in Matcham.
Mr and Mrs Wind (GPCC parents) very kindly hosted the night and not only catered for those who came, but set up an amazing garden party complete with fire bins, hay bales and fairy lights. It was a night designed to get students offsite, in a different setting to hear the Gospel, encourage one another and see themselves as part of a bigger story – God’s story.
It was great that God had been preparing hearts prior to the event.
Sophie S and Riley M prepared some songs with song-sheets for some communal worship around the fire and students participated.
Mr Masters delivered a Bible talk on the narratives we privilege in our lives and the desire for freedom – true freedom offered by and found in God the Father from Luke 15 (the story of the lost son).
Praise God and please pray for His continued working in hearts and minds. Pray for many students’ renewed vision of Jesus and conviction to turn to Him. Mr Greg Masters

Clean4Shore Service Activity - Years 9 and 10
We met near the Gosford Sailing Club on a beautiful autumn morning with bright sun and no wind. We hopped on to the Clean4Shore barge and headed across Brisbane Water to Fagan’s Bay.
Our first task was the Western side of the rail line, with the students in three groups wading and walking in the tight mangroves. We collected six very full bags of litter, mainly floating items, rubber, plastic bottles and polystyrene. We then moved on, the high tide allowed access into the mangroves behind “Bunnings” adjacent to the walkway to Point Clare. We were on our hands and knees retrieving small litter items floating on the tidal water amongst the mangroves. We collected seven very full bags from this site with plenty more present for future clean up.
Narara Creek foreshore adjacent to the Evergreen Village was the next task, with much easier access than the previous site. We collected over 100 balls throughout the day which indicates storm debris from the streets.
The students had a great time and developed an understanding of the importance of handling litter correctly and the impact it has on our waterways when it’s not disposed of properly. It’s probably the most adventurous and fun way to study Geography, so next time we go, ensure you put your name down for Clean4Shore.
Well done to Owen B, Aiden D, Keira F, Samuel F, Katelyn H, Lucas H, Charlotte H, Clayton L, Madeline N and Jett W.
Mr Richard Hall

CIS Secondary Swimming Championships
Congratulations to our amazing team of swimmers in Secondary who competed at the CIS Secondary Swimming Championships.
Backing up after our Athletics Carnival, a team of 18 athletes travelled to SOPAC to represent both our school and CSSA as this elite carnival. Making it to this level is an accomplishment in itself and we want to acknowledge the phenomenal talent we have at our school in swimming.
An update of their official results will be in next week’s newsletter.
Primary Athletics Carnival
It was a fine sunny day when we held the Primary Athletics Carnival. The students were very keen to be finally at Mingara, competing in an athletics competition.
There were so many wonderful results throughout the day. The students gave 100% in whatever event they partcicpated in and they did it with a smile. It was fantastic to see the commitment that our Primary students showed in competing in some of the challenging events. For example, seeing Year 2 students having a go at the 1500m. An impressive effort indeed!
Our official results and Age Champions from the carnival will be published in the newsletter in several weeks time. We will then present the Age Champions medals at Chapel once everything has been confirmed and checked.

GPCC Secondary Athletics Carnival
It was great to finally have our Secondary Athletics Carnival on such a clear and perfect day … much better than the original date, that’s for sure.
Starting off the carnival can sometimes be a bit slow with everyone trying to warm up and prepare themselves for the day, but our carnival started off the opposite, it started as a sprint.
Our first event was the 800m and in the first three races, three records were broken quite significantly. Raj S, Wade B and Mitch M started our carnival at a cracking pace. This trend continued with a number of records broken throughout the day. It truly was amazing to see many students perform so well and to set such high standards in these events. For example, Tom S setting a new High Jump record of 1.90m. That is absolutely superb, that height is taller than me! All of our record breakers and Age Champions will be confirmed and published in a future newsletter edition once everything has been finalised.

My life as a Plastic Bag - by Chloe B (Year 7)
On the day I was born, my first sight was a factory. The next thing I took into account was my 273,972,603 brothers and sisters. Once we were moulded into our traditional shape, we were separated and sold to companies like Coles, Woolworths, Big W, Kmart and multiple others. I went to Coles. I was immediately put on this rack at a register with a kind young lady named Samantha, or at least that’s what her name tag said, she would be my bagging lady.
The next day, on her Monday, 10am shift, it was my turn. I was first on the rack, ready to be handy and helpful. A couple with a baby and a young girl, around 8, came to the checkout, up first and getting ready for the week. I bagged a Barbie, a bottle of orange juice, a box of frozen chicken nuggets and a bag of frozen chips. After Samantha picked me up and put me in the ‘to be trolleyed’ bay, the father hoisted me into his trolley. The little girl, sitting in the inbuilt chair platform, reached over to me and pulled out the Barbie, opening it and handing the rubbish to her mother. The mother scooted the trolley over to the red bin and dumped the plastic into it. The father then placed the rest of the bags into the trolley, thanked Samantha, grabbed the handle and urging the heavy trolley forward. Me and my 5 other siblings were off to our new forever home!
We pull up to a house in the family car. The little girl unbuckles and jumps out of the car, gets to the door, and screams for her mum to unlock it. While mum deals with the meltdown, baby in arm, dad pulls open the boot and grabs us by the handles. After we are inside, our products are unloaded and put into the big grey box. Then, he shoves us into the white bin filled with garbage like apple cores, yogurt tubes, baby food containers and glad wrap.
We stay there for a couple days, the family occasionally coming to put other things in there. A week passes, and we are finally lifted out of the darkness and into the open space of the kitchen, except this time, we are surrounded by a bigger plastic bag. We get thrown around for a little while, until we stop, and I hear a lid open. After a couple seconds we are thrown into a bigger bin, rolled out onto the road, and left there overnight.
The next morning, a huge rumbling wakes us up. It gets closer, and closer, before stopping right in front of us. I feel frightened, what is happening. We sit there in suspense before being hurled vertically into a huge metal box, that is filled with other garbage, but our bag was ripped, and I rolled out and away from the truck. I was on the road and now that the wind had hold of me, I was not getting away. I rolled and drifted through the air, tumbling and ripping even more. I was heading towards a big blue land mass, that was moving? Well, I was about to find out what it was.
I plunged into icy water, and so suddenly, I was swept to the side with the strong, powerful current. There I was, flowing out and away from all the land and all the homes I ever knew, and moving towards the big, empty ocean. The big, empty abyss. The place where all outcasts end up one day, lonely, quiet, isolated.
Days of drifting, weeks of emptiness, months of noiselessness, years of abandonment pass, until I reach something that looks like an island, wait, I look closer, it’s made out of garbage? What is this place? Where am I? There looks to be millions of pieces of trash here? So many other plastic bags!
I am in the great pacific garbage patch. There are 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic here. This is just an estimate. We are actively damaging our world. Every day, over 8 million pieces of plastic end up in our ocean. We cannot survive like this. By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.
“no water, no life, no blue, no green” – Sylvia Earle
“the greatest danger to our world, is the belief that someone else will save it” – Robert Swan
