On Wednesday afternoon the Year 6 students and teachers, led by Mr Kieren Turner, held a memorial service to honour their classmate and student, Mitchell Brown who passed away recently. It was a lovely tribute to a boy who lived life vibrantly and had a wide circle of friends. He has left his mark on all of them, and a fine example of a life lived to the full. On Friday afternoon the family will lay Mitch to rest in a small private service to which I, Mr Turner and Mr McSwan have been invited. The family have initiated a GoFundMe page (Mitch’s Memorial Garden) so that people can contribute to the cost of a memorial garden the family will construct at their family home in Saratoga. You may like to contribute to that at this link.
The HSC examinations have started, and the first two papers (English) were fair, and students generally came out feeling confident and very glad that they have finally been able to get started. Keep them in your prayers over the coming three weeks.
This term we launched a new venture at GPCC. I have had this idea for a long time to appoint an Academic in Residence in the school to help us raise academic standards and to assist us to think well through what we are doing. When I put the proposal to the Board in August, they were quick to endorse it and through connections we have in academic circles, we have appointed Dr Martin Dowson to the role. Dr Dowson is a double PhD in Educational Psychology and Theology and has worked in the academic world since he gave up primary school teaching many years ago. He is a researcher and is very well published in peer-reviewed journals in Australia and overseas. You can get to know him more through this short video: Introducing Dr Martin Dowson GPCC Academic In Residence
Dr Dowson will do a number of things for us including, helping us undertake research within the school, analysis of academic results data including NAPLAN and the HSC, the review of new projects to ensure we have looked at research and literature on the ideas and are engaging in best practice, helping us to think Biblically about what we are doing, working with staff and students on their own study, and assisting our teachers with their professional development.
He is engaged for two days a week and has launched into getting to know our school and the people in it and has already tackled a range of projects with very pleasing results. We see this as a valuable way we can move our school forward in academic and critical thinking and practice to the benefit of our students.
Our school for students on the Autism spectrum (Yattalunga Valley Christian School), is coming together well with staff now appointed and our enrolment target of 10 children, Kindy to Year 2 has been met. We have set aside a room for rent in the upper Primary school and are looking forward to welcoming our new students in January 2022. The property out in the Brewarrina Shire is now in our possession and we are tidying things up and preparing for the visit of our first students in Term 1, 2022. We plan to set up a caravan and campervan site on the property and I hope many of you might take a camping trip out there and spend a few days getting to enjoy the site.

Operation Christmas Child
Our boxes have all come in and are being collected by Samaritans Purse. I would like to once again take this opportunity to thank all of our families who participated in making this Christmas a little more special for those around the world that have much less than we have.

Class Formation 2022
It is hard to believe that it is the time of year when we begin to think about forming classes for the new school year. Next week students will take time to choose their five friends, and these will be used to ensure that each child has at least one friend in their class next year. Please take time to discuss the importance for choosing friends that help students to be the best learners they can be. Social connection is important but can be left for playtime breaks.
Any requests around the formation of classes need to be made in writing to Mrs Smith by Friday 19 November 2021.
Languages Change for 2022
GPCC has had a long history of teaching languages in both Primary and Secondary. In the past this has been a sequential Japanese program where students build strong foundations in Primary and then continue on in Secondary.
With the cessation of Japanese as an elective subject in Secondary due to the loss of our teacher and its replacement with French as the language elective, Primary will be following along a similar path.
The amazing Mrs Reynolds will be teaching French to Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) throughout 2022 and our Japanese program will be discontinued for Years K-4. Other changes mean we will not be teaching French below Year 5.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Corinna Reynolds (Sensei) for her passion and love for the subject and the way she has brought learning to life in this area for the past 20 years. She will bring the same passion to French from now on.

Mrs Jane McLarty | Deputy Principal
The HSC has commenced and saw our Year 12 students able to finally look forward to their future beyond school. After a very challenging couple of years for this cohort, I have been so encouraged by their resilience, persistence, and sense of humour. Go well Year 12 and we look forward to celebrating your Graduation at school on Thursday 2 December and Formal on Friday 3 December.
Thank you to Mrs Mckay, who has stepped in to oversee our HSC students. Message from her below.
"After a very long wait, our Year 12 students finally began their HSC exams this week. Despite the extra hurdles of QR codes, mask-wearing and a timetable that has changed multiple times, Year 12 students were on time, well-prepared and in good spirits. Mrs Mary Austin (Presiding Officer) commented on the excellent attitude and calm approach of all students, commending them on their compliance and diligence. The encouragement and support of families and teachers has been instrumental in preparing Year 12 to be confident and well-equipped in facing this final hurdle of their schooling journey. Our students have shown perseverance, fortitude and even good humour as they have navigated the significant challenges of this year and we are incredibly proud of their hard work. Congratulations, Year 12! We look forward to celebrating your graduation and formal with you in just a few weeks."
National School Counsellor Appreciation
Last week our newly inducted Prefect Team acknowledged and thanked our College Counsellors for the amazing role they play in the welfare of our students and staff. Jarel, Tiff and Stephen (and Bentley) are here to help students, parents, and staff to navigate the many challenges they face. Their calm demeanour, welcoming spaces, effective strategies and techniques help our community enormously each day. Thank you, Counselling Team, for all you do.
HSC Exams
Please continue to be in prayer for our 2021 HSC students.
HSC Textiles and Design Major Work
Chloe S created a hanging applique on cotton inspired by Katatjuta (The Olgas), Northern Territory, Central Australia. There is an Aboriginal landscape influence in her work, with a sense of country including local flora and patterns. The work represents sky, rock and ground with textures created by stitching and additional elements. Colour choices are representative of the location and subject.
Congratulations to Chloe on her amazing major work for Textiles, which she studied via Distance Education.
Photo: Chloe visited Central Australia in 2018 on a GPCC Geography trip when she was in Year 9. Maybe that is what inspired her Year 12 major work?

Mr Nathan Lambert | K-12 Sport Co-ordinator
2021 Age Champions
Since the beginning of Term 3, we have been wanting to present Age Champion trophies/medallions to a number of students in both the Primary and Secondary school.
In Primary, we were planning on presenting the Athletics and Cross Age Champions at a special assembly just before students went to Zone Athletics (in early August), but unfortunately due to Lockdown, this was unable to happen.
Secondary were going to receive their Athletics and Cross Country Age Champions at the Commendation Assembly in Term 3, but that also was cancelled.
With restrictions stopping the ability to hold special assemblies or commendations, we still have been unable to present these awards.
However, there will be a chance to present some awards at the end of the year.
Primary are planning on having special Stage Thanksgiving Services in the last week of school where class awards will be handed out. We will also be able to present:
- Athletics Age Champions (1st - 3rd place)
- Cross Country Age Champions (1st – 3rd place)
Secondary will receive their awards at their own Year Assembly in the next couple of weeks. These awards will be:
- Athletics Age Champions (1st – 3rd place)
- Cross Country Age Champions (1st – 3rd place)
- Swimming Age Champions (2nd – 3rd place)
It is a shame we are unable to hold these special services for the whole Primary or Secondary School to acknowledge the wonderful achievements of students in our school.

Central Coast Aademy of Sport - Basketball
Congratulations to Sophie V, Year 7, who recently made the Central Coast Academy of Sport Basketball team. This is a competitive squad to qualify for, so Sophie’s place has been hard-earned and is well-deserved. Well done Sophie.

Also include details on years playing and competition results.

Recognition for 2020- Grace M (Year 5)
Grace produced a short video last year about her Aboriginal culture, knowledge and personal experience. NAIDOC celebrations were online due to COVID, her video was shared in Primary classrooms. No awards were held in 2020, this category is to recognise students who missed out on the opportunity.
Teacher Contribution- Mr Andrew McGillivray
Mr McGillivray has led student mission trips to Brewarrina for many years. He mentors students and has a passion for learning about Aboriginal culture. Mr McGillivray has delivered NAIDOC messages and is integral in raising the profile of teaching Aboriginal history, culture and experience at Green Point Christian College.

Jeanie has two children at Green Point. She is passionate about raising the profile of Aboriginal education and increasing understanding. Jeanie has advised us during the organisation of NAIDOC, Reconciliation and Sorry Day events.

Performing Arts award- Grace M (Year 5)
Grace started in performance group for dance last year. In 2021 she started competing in solo dance. Unfortunately this has been impacted by COVID but she has performed to a high standard.
Leadership- Alexander B (Year 9)
Alex wrote “ I am a proud Aboriginal Australian. My great grandfather was from the Wakka Wakka tribe between Brisbane and Bundaberg in Queensland. My great grandmother was born on the Yass River and was from the Wiradjuri tribe which covers a large area in Central NSW down to the Murray river.” Country is very important, this was part of his NAIDOC speech in front of Secondary school. Alex left students with this thought, “I really hope that through more awareness and huge effort Australia can start to close the gap and eliminate these differences to ensure equality for all.”
Student Contributions in The Messenger
We encourage students to email contributions for the new section of our weekly newsletter, titled Student Voice. It may be a short story, a poem, service activity, an achievement or award (sporting, scouts, Duke of Ed etc). Please email to jcollins@gpcc.nsw.edu.au for consideration of inclusion in The Messenger.
Note from the Accounts Department
This change will come into effect from 1 November 2021. If you wish to make a purchase at the College office and cannot attend in person, you are welcome to telephone the office and make payment over the phone by debit/visa card.
