This week I want to outline what we are working on with our teachers in terms of their professional development. Last year we appointed Mr Michael Street, who was our Faculty Co-ordinator for HSIE (social sciences) as the Director of Teacher Development K-12.
Michael is an outstanding teacher and a rising academic who is currently working on his PhD through Macquarie University. He is responsible for planning and organising the professional learning program for our teachers. We have set aside Wednesday after school for an hour each week to focus on the on-going equipping of our teachers and their upskilling.
Michael has developed an approach called the Active Professional Development Framework. It is grounded in our Teacher Profile which picks up the same elements as our Graduate Profile but adds in elements such as ‘strong presence’, ‘creating a supportive and safe environment’, ‘uses a range of strategies’, and ‘values real-world learning’. We also connect this framework to the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership’s professional standards for teachers which is the national benchmark for teacher quality.
The Framework requires each teacher to develop a professional learning plan which sets out the goals they will focus on for each year. We have set up several Active Development Channels – Foundations for Christian Education (for teachers new to GPCC), Productive Pedagogies (for all teachers), Curriculum Leadership, Community Leadership and External Workshops and Conferences. While everyone participates in the weekly Productive Pedagogy sessions, new teachers to the school must select the Foundations channel and all others may select another voluntary channel for the year. Any teacher may request or be encouraged to participate in external courses and conferences.
The strength of our school is very dependent on the continued up-skilling of our staff. This framework gives shape to our expectation of this and helps staff take some responsibility for their own growth with our support. We also identify common areas for development so for example, in 2021 Primary staff engaged in a literacy project and this year are engaged in a mathematics project. These are led by an external consultant. The Productive Pedagogies afternoons have focused on differentiation in teaching i.e., providing opportunities for students of differing abilities to learn and demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways in the same class and program.
The NSW Government has launched an entire new set of curricular documents which must be adopted in the next few years so much work will also be done on revising our current units of work to align with the new curriculum.
Teaching is a constantly changing profession with new demands and expectations coming in all the time. Pray for our teachers as they take on the challenge of keeping up their knowledge of current practice and the development of new skills. Our desire is to offer a quality academic program for your children undergirded by the worldview of our Christian faith that will equip them with the ability to make a positive contribution to the world.

Musical Disney’s The Jungle Book - Kids!
We are beyond excited to be announcing the launch of the 2022 Primary School musical – Disney’s 'The Jungle Book - Kids' production, it will be performed in late Term 3 and plans are already underway for an amazing production involving all students in the Primary school. There are several key drama and vocal roles that we will be looking to fill over the next few weeks.
Mrs Mckeown will be conducting some drama and characterisation workshops (during Primary Sport time) over the coming weeks in preparation for auditions for some of our lead roles. If your child is in Years 5 or 6 and would like to be considered for these roles please encourage them meet Mrs Mckeown on Friday after lunch at the red line.
Sickness and school attendance
As winter approaches so does the increase in coughs and colds for our students. It is still very important for the health and safety of all our community that students with Coughs and colds are tested using the Rapid antigen tests, and remain at home whilst demonstrating symptoms that could be contagious. If you child is absent, please notify the office or register their absence via the Parent lounge. It is a legal requirement that we record the reasons for absentees for all our students.
New Jackets
As the weather gets colder, students need to begin to think about keeping warm on the playground. This year we have introduced a magnificent high quality, fleece lined, soft shell jacket that can be worn with our formal uniform . The jacket is now available in our uniform shop in a range of sizes and can be worn in both Primary and Secondary.
Scarves and Beanies
I reminded the students today that there is no need to be wearing beanies at school. If children have cold heads they are welcome to wear their school cap or hat. Scarves and gloves can be worn but must be in the school colours and scarves tails need to be tucked into jackets to prevent being caught.

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary
It was great to see some of student leaders attend the Sydney Prayer Breakfast this week. Prayer needs to the base of our lives. Too often I see people trying to do life in their own strength, but it is through prayer that we realise that we need help in life. We need the strength and wisdom of God to cope with all the challenges that we face in our day-to-day world. God calls us to seek after Him and He is faithful never to let us down. It might be time to try it.
Please pray for the boys on our mission trip to Berrawina this week that this trip will be an opportunity to serve others and grow closer to God.
Phone Ban during School Hours
With the prohibition of phone use during school hours there has been an increase in the number of students using computers in class time to contact parents because they wish to go home because of illness or other reasons. Please stress to your children if they are unwell or need to contact home, they should go to the office where they will be allowed to contact their parents for arrangements to be made if they need to go home.
If for any reason you need to remove your child early from school please contact the office so that students can be informed and brought to the office to meet you.
Winter is here…
This week has shown that temperatures are dropping quickly this Winter. Please make sure that your child has the correct uniform for Winter.
Please encourage your girls to wear black opaque tights with their skirts. Many girls have made this choice even though it is not a compulsory requirement rather an option in Secondary School.
Please continue to monitor your students uniform meets the expectation of the uniform policy.
Year 10 Aim Boys Mission Trip

Sydney Prayer Breakfast
Mr Nash, Mrs McKay and seven of our Year 12 Prefects attended the 2022 Sydney Prayer Breakfast in Darling Harbour, joining with almost 1700 others (mostly from the corporate community) to pray for Sydney, our nation and our leaders. We were reminded that our faith and the gospel message can powerfully shape our choices and impact our workplaces wherever we work, ‘as working for the Lord and not for men’. (Col 2:23) The testimony of Peter Gibbs was deeply moving and inspiring and we were all reminded of the power of prayer.

Josie Mitchell Debating Competition
Four of our Year 8 students did remarkably well in the Josie Mitchell debating competition held at St Brigid’s Catholic College, Lake Munmorah. Bella T, Scarlett S and Tuscany C all spoke, preparing thoroughly and speaking confidently on their assigned topics. Felicity R provided invaluable support as the ‘silent speaker’ throughout the day.
They won the first topic but lost the second narrowly to the indomitable St Joseph’s. In addition to their first win, our students also won their impromptu topic “Day is better than night”. Congratulations to these students on their fine efforts.

Discover Engineering Incursion
A group of Year 10 students attended a Discover Engineering Incursion aimed to introduce students to just how Engineers use their maths and science knowledge to create, innovate and solve problems.
HSIE Lessons
Students in their HSIE lessons have been enjoying some new resources aimed at supporting their world awareness and practical skills. All HSIE rooms have been equipped with high quality large World maps for students to engage with. These maps are being used in all HSIE subjects to start discussions and increase understanding of the world's composition. The department has also installed a new weather station for students to use during geography. This station allows students to track and predict weather patterns and understand the relationship between these weather patterns.

Primary Athletic Event Update
We are slowly making our way through the discus and shot-put events that could not be run at the Athletics Carnival. This is again reliant on good weather.
I hope to have all of this completed by the end of the term and will then be able to work out Age Champions, winning House and the squad for Zone which is scheduled for August 1 (next term). Thank you for your patience.
Athletics and Cross-Country Awards
These will be presented together at a Chapel service early next term once all the athletic events have been completed.
Primary CSSA Cross Country Carnival
Last Friday a team of 24 students from Primary School travelled to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre to compete at the CSSA Cross Country Carnival. The day was beautiful, but the track was muddy which made for a very challenging race.
On average, most races have about 150 competitors per age group. Our team performed very well with any finish inside the top 100 considered a huge achievement. The top 10 place getters for each race qualify for the next level at CIS of which we had 3. Congratulations to all our runners who did such an amazing job.
A special mention to Nash P (5th- 8/9year boys), Ulrich E (4th- 10year boys) and Chase C (9th- 12year boys) who will be representing CSSA at the CIS carnival next week.

CSSA Secondary Cross Country Carnival
Last Friday (May 27), 34 secondary students competed at the CSSA State Cross Country Carnival in Western Sydney. Christian schools and colleges from across the State gathered in dazzling autumn sunshine to run in the mud. Despite the challenges, GPCC had some brilliant results on the day. Angelique A (17yrs girls) and Wade B (16yrs boys) were superstars both placing first in their age groups. Likewise, our 13yrs Girls, 14yrs Boys and 17yrs Girls teams each placed first, with the 13 yrs Girls particularly impressive, winning in a field of 15 teams. Other legendary performances included Emily F and Jonathon L (both 3rd), Codie W and Sanjay S (both 4th) Bronte M and Harry I (both 7th), Sinead W, Logan L and Luke B (all 10th). Each of these students along with Ciara W, Ayla D, Charlie M, Zaid A G and Eloise H will progress to the CIS Cross Country Championships on June 8.

English Resources - Secondary
COVID lockdowns over the last two years have depleted our English text resources, some titles are missing a quarter of the books. Our policy is to charge for English texts, as they will need to be replaced. Some students have three or four texts out over multiple years. Please check at home for Library and English texts to return this week. Charges for lost texts will be added to school accounts before the end of term.
Makerspace - Grassy Heads
On Monday 30 May, interested students made grassy heads as our maker space activity for the term. Students please don’t forget to take off the lid and water your creations. Put it in a sunny place and watch its hair grow. A big thank you to our Library Monitors who helped on the day. They were sent home with a book prize and of course they had lots of fun.
