We reach the final in our series of articles on aspects of the philosophy and practice of education at GPCC.
(Link: PoEP )
A key aspect of teacher practice is what actually happens in the classroom. At GPCC, we have selected a profile of practices we want to see all teachers using in our classrooms from Kindergarten to Year 12.
The Quality GPCC Classroom Profile is connected to the Australian Institute for Teachers and School Leaders (AITSL) 2018 Australian Teacher Performance and Development Framework and focuses on three key elements.
Effective teachers will:
- Plan carefully and implement the plan via effective instruction;
- Create a supportive and safe environment for students; and
- Provide regular and timely feedback on student progress.
The 11 Quality Classroom Profile points (set out below) pick up on practical ways we can assess whether effective instruction is taking place in our classrooms. They assume that good unit and lesson planning has already taken place and that all the other elements of the Teacher Standards are being done well.
Our goal is that in every GPCC classroom, recognisable best practice is taking place to ensure we are being effective Christian teachers, helping students to grow strongly and understand the world from God's perspective.
GPCC Quality Classroom Profile:
- Lesson focus is clear
- New learning links to prior learning / work / knowledge
- Clear Instruction
- Regular practise
- Checking for understanding
- Feedback
- Differentiation
- Reference to learning skills
- Supportive and safe relationships
- Biblical perspectives
- Closure of the lesson
Classrooms in which these are regular and observable practices will be places in which quality teaching and learning is taking place. While we know teaching is a very complex activity (both art and science), paying attention to these proven best practices will give us a sense of purpose and contribute to all GPCC classrooms being places of quality learning.

BOOK WEEK – We certainly are a bunch of CURIOUS CREATURES with WILD MINDS
What a wonderful way to celebrate together. Our wonderfully costumed students immersed themselves in a full day of literature activities, reading shortlisted books and responding through drama, art and games. The afternoon was no exception with students moving outdoors for our carnival of activities. It was a wonderful day of laughter and literacy. A big thank you to our amazing Library staff and especially Mrs van Wyk for all of the thought and preparation that went into a spectacularly wild and curious day. Have a look at some of the amazing photos.

Head of School Awards
Congratulations to the following students who achieved the Head of School Award for Week 5:
Imogen W, KDL; Jake B, KP; Juliana L, 1G; Isla L, 1PH; Asher B, 2G; Ruben D, 2J; Harry K, 3K; Anna K, 4B; Gussie N, 4M; Zeke M, 5D; Anna O, 5H; Savannah M, 5P; Jet H, 6D; Siena D, 6M and Jackson S, 6T.
NESA Write-On Competition WINNERS!
We are thrilled to announce that two of our students were awarded prizes in the NESA annual Write-On competition. Amelia M (Year 5) received a Gold award and Ellen (Year 4) a Silver award.
Students composed an imaginative text of up to 500 words, using the image below as a stimulus.
Only six of these awards are given out across NSW in each section so to have two recipients in our midst is a great honour. For Amelia, this is the second consecutive year she has received a Gold award and will be published in the anthology of work. Both girls were awarded their certificates by Mr Nash. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them both on an outstanding achievement. You can read and view the student submissions on our website.

Hats at School – after Father's Day
As the weather begins to warm up the UV will also begin to increase, and it is important for our students to begin to wear their hats again at recess and lunchtime. Please take time with your children to find and label their sun hats ready for the launch of hats again for Spring/Summer. The Australian Cancer Council recommends that when the UV is above three we should use sun protection. Please assist us in keeping our students safe and remind them of the importance of protecting our skin.
Road Safety
At GPCC, safety is always a priority. One of the main risk factors at our College is the amount of cars and students at pick up in the afternoons.
For this reason we are starting a road safety campaign. Students will be learning about ways to cross roads and carparks safely, the importance of seatbelts and the need to hold a hand until your child is at least 8 years old.
Up until at least 10 years old, supervise your child very closely, holding their hand when crossing the road. If a hand isn’t available they should hold an arm, bag, clothes or the pram.

Fight on! It is time to study and perfect your skills for the days ahead. You can improve and achieve the results you desire.

- Work hard.
Please pray for Year 12 and their motivation and determination to finish the year in a positive strong manner.

Extension 2 English Major Works
On Friday 21August, our three Year 12 Extension 2 English students submitted their Final Major Works across the fields of poetry, podcasts and short film.
This is the culmination of a year’s worth of work and they have shown great resilience and perseverance during this time. Some of the major works were significantly affected by COVID-19 restrictions and we want to particularly recognise the way that the students encouraged and cared for each other. Their teacher, Mrs Gaffney, has been a wonderful mentor, guide and facilitator in this process and the students have often expressed their gratitude and appreciation of her hard work, time and energy.
Congratulations to Jessica B, Jemilla H and Tabitha L for completing this part of their HSC.

HOUSE CUP
The GPCC House Cup began this week and it has been a very exciting start to the competition. This competition is held at recess for the relevant stages, with the focus on teamwork in the mixed House teams.
We have 10 teams competing in the Years 3 and 4 Division, while 11 teams are playing in the Years 5 and 6 Division. Our Years 3 and 4 House teams competed in Soccer on Tuesday and then International Handball on Thursday. Our Years 5 and 6 teams played their soccer competition on Wednesday and were scheduled to play Basketball on Friday, but were unable to due to being dressed up in their Book Week characters.
The Years 7 and 8 Boys Division played Basketball in their first sport, with the Eagles winning this competition after their two straight game victories. As they are the Years 7 and 8 Team Champions, they will now verse the Years 9 and 10 Champions in the coming weeks.
