Last week I introduced our Blended Learning project. I have had the privilege of visiting some of our Secondary classrooms and looking at what teachers are doing to make changes to their usual practice.
In a Year 8 Maths class, the teacher has grouped students according to ability based on their previous work, introduced the topic of the day, then each group could work at a range of activities set up for them with access to online videos by the teacher and other internet resources to go over what had been presented. The teacher then worked for 20 minutes with one group who he knew needed some extra support and explanation. Students could work ahead and do extension activities, talk together in their group about the problems to be solved, go over the teacher’s instruction via his videos, look at other videos to get a different perspective and know that they too would get some time in a small group with the teacher.
The result has been a marked increase in results over the past term as this method has been used more. Students have a higher level of engagement with the work and a growing sense of responsibility and control over the pace at which they are working and the results they are achieving.
In a Year 10 Visual Art class the students had worked with the teacher to put together the unit. It involved them choosing to study a particular artist, learn about their work then choose a social theme to focus on and by emulating the artist’s style, make a social comment. Students had a sense of ownership of the whole project because they had helped decide how it would all go together (while still meeting curriculum requirements). They had choice about which artist and what style to focus on so could follow their own artistic interests and were free to make a social comment of their choosing.
In a Year 10 Modern History class, students regularly do a short piece of writing in response to a set question, then have to read at least three other students’ work and give it a mark against the marking criteria. This helps them to see how their work compares to that of others, forces them to think more closely about what they could have included in their own writing and engages them closely with the marking criteria so they really come to know what is required to score well. They also give feedback on the work, getting them to think critically about the responses and how they can be improved.
So, while all these are quite different, they capture in some way the important elements of a shift in focus from the teacher making all the decisions and judgements, determining the order of tasks and doing all the talking. Students are developing a sense of how they can become a stronger learner and take some control of their learning.
It is great to see GPCC teachers taking up the challenge to re-think how they might help students be better learners.

Car Park
At GPCC, safety is always a priority. One of the main risk factors at our College is the amount of cars and students at pick up in the afternoons. For this reason, we have begun a road safety campaign. We are asking parents to support us in demonstrating good duty of care by following our car park and pick up guidelines:
- Primary students should not walk across the car park without an accompanying adult.
- Primary students should only be picked up from the Kiss and Drop or the bottom of the hill and are not allowed to walk to Beaties Road or 7/11 to meet parents/carers.
- Students waiting in Kiss and Drop need to be seated and observantly waiting to be picked up.
- Students must follow the direction or teachers and grounds staff in relation to crossings and movement in the pick up areas.
Fruit & Veg Month 2020
How do you know if your family is eating enough fruit and vegetables?
Our school is participating in Fruit & Veg Month 2020. This year’s theme is "Planet Fruit & Veg", because eating more fruit and veg is good for us and the planet. As part of Fruit & Veg Month we have been encouraging children each week on how to "up the fruit and veg" at your place – for yourselves and the planet.
So how do you know if your family is eating enough fruit and vegetables? The simplest way is to include fruit and vegetables at each meal and snack. This resource has some simple tips on how to make this happen.
Recipes referred to in resource Is your family is eating enough fruit and vegetables? fruit wands recipe and video, fruit (or veg) smoothie recipe and video, vegie fritters recipe and video
If you require more information on what activities our school is doing for Fruit & Veg Month, please contact Mrs Munro, kmunro@gpcc.nsw.edu.au or your child’s teacher.
Primary Athletics Carnival - Wednesday 16 September.
Our Primary Athletics Carnival for Years 3-6 will be at school this Wednesday.
Unfortunately, we are unable to have parent or carer spectators due to COVID-19 restrictions, but I am sure the students will have an amazing day.
Students in those grades will need to wear sports uniform and bring their hat, lunch and recess for an amazing day of competition and activity.

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary
This term is quickly coming to an end and it will mark the end of school for our current Year 12.
Even though this year has been different than any before because of COVID, our Year 12's have been well prepared for their HSC.
Please continue to keep them in your prayers. I found a link to encourage any students who feel they have left everything until the last moment. It has some very good information and ideas for the procrastinator and those who are in overload.
Follow this link for more information.
Year 12 Graduation
This is a reminder that Year 12 Graduation is coming up very quickly. Please put in your diaries the following details.
Location: MPC (Streamed live for Parents)
Date: Thursday, 24 September
Time: 9.30am
Graduation this year will be a streamed event with no parents in attendance at the College due to the current COVID restrictions in place.
Full formal uniform must be worn including a blazer. Correct shoes are needed and white ankle length socks for girls.
Year 11 New Drivers
Many Year 11 students are getting their licences which is opening up all new possibilities. However, before they start driving to school, they need to fill in their 2020 Student Driver Permission Form which they can obtain from Mr Lewis.
Please have a word to your Year 11 child indicating to them that there is an expectation that having a licence does not give them freedom to come and go during school time. They must be present in all classes.
Past GPCC student wins International Diamond League Athletics Meet
Last weekend, Nicola McDermott (graduate 2014) competed in the Brussels Diamond League Athletics meet in the high jump. Having just jumped a personal best of 1.98m the week before, she carried on her good form in the Brussels meet taking out the event with a jump of 1.91m. Nicola is an outstanding ambassador for Christ and an international star athlete.

Year 12 Care Packs
Year 9 students presented Year 12 students in their Devotion classes with Care Packs last Friday.

HSC Students to Have COVID-19 Test Results Faster
Students taking the 2020 HSC exams will now have their COVID-19 test results fast tracked through pathology. They simply need to advise the nurse or doctor doing the test that they are HSC students. Find your nearest testing clinics:

INFANTS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
It was a fantastic day last Thursday when we held the Infants Athletics Carnival. Though the weather looked ominous the day before, it was great on the day and was a very enjoyable carnival for all students, staff and helpers.
Watch the video highlights here.
We had a number of events running throughout the morning, with the classes rotating every 30 minutes to one of the following:
- Novelty event (hopper races, tug-o-war, jumping sack races)
- Relay races (egg and spoon, bucket and beans, leg ball carry)
- Basketball court (scooting, padded hockey, basketball shots)
- Sprints (quick sprint on the oval)
- Jumping Castles (2 x jumping castles to choose from)
There was definitely a great atmosphere and all the Infants children had a lovely time. The smiles came freely with so many fun and exciting activities to participate in.
Thank you to Mrs Boyd for organising such a wonderful carnival. Also, a big thank you to the staff and to our amazing Year 6 helpers (House Captains and Prefects) for running all the activities.
PRIMARY ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
A reminder that our Primary Athletics Carnival will be held this Wednesday 16 September for Years 3-6 students (not Year 2 students this year as previously mentioned). It will be held on the school oval, with each Stage competing at a specific time:
- Years 3-4 classes: 9:30am – 12:00pm
- Years 5-6 classes: 12:00pm – 3:00pm
Each grade will be placed into the following groups and then rotate around the six events (Sprints, Discus, Shot Put, Long Jump, High Jump, Relays):
- Group 1: 9yrs Girls (Surname A-H)
- Group 2: 8yrs + 9yrs Girls (Surname I-Z)
- Group 3: 9yrs Boys (Surname A-H)
- Group 4: 8yrs + 9yrs Boys (Surname I-Z)
- Group 5: 10yrs Girls
- Group 6: 10yrs Boys
- Group 7: 11yrs Girls (A-M)
- Group 8: 10yrs + 11yrs Girls (N-Z)
- Group 9: 11yrs Boys (A-M)
- Group 10: 10yrs + 11yrs Boys (N-Z)
- Group 11: 12yrs Girls
- Group 12: 12yrs Boys
Age Champions and the winning House will still be determined from the results on the day. There is a chance where the top five from each event may be able to compete at Mingara in Term 4 in our “Athletics Finals”. As we cannot have a Zone or State competition, this might be a nice alternative and a chance for students to better their previous result.
