On Friday last week we had our five yearly registration and accreditation visit from the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). All independent schools must be registered with NESA and accredited if they offer the Record of Student Achievement (ROSA) at Year 10 and the HSC program at Years 11 and 12.
The process requires us to submit sample evidence of compliance with NESA regulations and for me as Principal to sign off that in all respects our school meets the requirements for a registered school. A NESA Inspector visits to review a sample of curriculum documents and our submission. We passed with no issues being raised by the Inspector.
We are also an accrediting authority on behalf of NESA for teacher registration. This requires us to submit documentation that demonstrates that we meet all the regulations and requirements for accrediting our teachers. The NESA Inspector also reviewed that part of our operation and again we passed and were granted a five year renewal which is the maximum you can be given. Mrs Jane McLarty, our Deputy Principal, is the person who heads up that operation for us.
This past week we had all our Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students sit for the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). This is Australia’s way of checking on the progress of students over time in meeting curriculum standards. These are not tests we can specifically prepare students for, and neither should we. It is a sample of a cohort every two years to see how they are doing and allows us to track progress across those years.
The media love to use these results (as they do the HSC ones) as a measure of school success. It is true that a school plays a very significant role in helping students learn at an appropriate pace and level for their age, but schools also cannot control some aspects of success for a student. Your role as parents is as significant in how well your child will do at school. If you encourage and promote curiosity, investigative play, read to your child and provide a stimulating oral and physical environment for them, help them to socialise and provide stability and love at an early age, there is every chance they will do well at school.
But even when home and school do all the right things, we accept that each child is an individual and there are many other factors beyond our control that may make learning challenging for a child. That is why it is important to take a long term view of learning. Our motto, "Equipped for Life" is not meant to imply that once they leave us, they are set for life, but that we play a part on the long journey of life in setting them up for success. You do as well.
So, whatever the NAPLAN results for your child, encourage them to keep going forward. A child is not defined by their NAPLAN results, but by who they are as a holistic human being. As a school we will certainly review the results and ensure we continue to work at creating the best possible learning environment for our students that we can.

Winter Uniform
Monday marked the first day of wearing our winter uniform. Please note that whilst we are in winter uniform the wearing of hats is optional. This is in line with new research that when the UV index is at three or below, students can play safely outside without sun protection. The key message is "when the number gets to three, we protect against UV". Please note these instructions are based on maximum UV levels. UV levels are usually highest in the middle of the day and in summer. In the early morning, late afternoon and in winter the UV is at its lowest.

Da Vinci Decathlon
The Da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students.
Students compete in teams of eight across ten disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, drama, cartography and legacy. This year a Year 5 and a Year 6 team wrestled with the theme of Chance across the ten tests. They demonstrated collaboration, they supported each other and rose to the challenge of some very difficult tasks. Congratulations Da Vinci teams.
Choir – Every Thursday Morning 8:00am

Please be aware that there is no playground supervision for siblings of these students until 8:15am.
Walk Safely to School Day - Monday 17 May
Primary School will be holding a Walk Safely To and Around School Day on Monday 17 May. We would like to encourage those families that live close to the College to take the opportunity to walk to school and perhaps those that live a little further away, to go for a walk in their neighbourhood in the afternoon and discuss the important things to remember when walking near traffic.
Recommendations from the RMS state that:
- Children up to eight years old should hold an adult's hand on the footpath, in the car park, or when crossing the road; an adult is defined as a parent, caregiver, grandparent, sibling in Secondary School or older, or other adult.
- Children up to ten years old should be actively supervised in the traffic environment and should hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.
At school each class will be taking the opportunity to walk around our site and discuss the different considerations of moving safely around the College, especially where there are shared zones of traffic and students. Thank you to Mrs de Lore for organising a very important day in our school.
Canberra
In Week 2, Year 6 travelled to Canberra for four days of fun and learning. The weather was perfect and the children were engaged, well-behaved and learnt heaps. New relationships were formed, old relationships strengthened and we saw many examples of our Creator’s hand at work in our surroundings and in each other. Mrs Smith, Mrs Brown, Mrs Styles, Mrs Munro, Mr Oldfield, Mr Sneyd and Mr Turner want to thank all the students and parents for the efforts they put in to make a memorable, enjoyable and educational week. We arrived home tired but had an amazing week. Mr Turner

Japanese in the Primary School - Haiku
With the Cherry Blossoms in bloom, Japan’s Springtime was the ideal topic for students to learn about Haiku - a famous three lined poem, that doesn’t rhyme, usually about nature, that consists of five, seven, and five syllables in format. Students entered their Haiku into class competitions, and the winning entries are included here.
Congratulations to all students. Reynolds Sensei

We have been very fortunate to be able to book Dr Patricia Weerakoon to come and speak to our students, parents and staff. CIS Primary Girls Netball Championships
Green Point Christian College has always been very competitive in netball. We have many talented and experienced players in both Primary and Secondary who love the game, play it all the time and relish the competition.
Last week, two of our talented players Emily B and Bronte M, both of who were selected in the CSSA Team, travelled to Sydney to compete at the CIS Primary Girls Netball Championships.
To even be selected in the CSSA team is a feat in itself; to then compete at a CIS competition is another level entirely.
These girls had a fantastic time, playing numerous games throughout the day, representing CSSA proudly.
The CSSA team performed exceptionally well and to top it off Bronte was selected in the CIS Primary Girls Netball Team.
This is a superb achievement by both Emily and Bronte to make it to CIS and then for Bronte to be selected in CIS was some icing on the cake. Congratulations girls.
CIS Secondary Open Girls Basketball Championships
Basketball is a very challenging sport.
It can take people a long time to develop the skills, strategies, techniques and knowledge of the game.
We have a number of very talented and experienced players at our school, with quite a few playing at a representative level.
In 2019, our Primary Girls Basketball team were a dominant force. They competed in the CSSA Girls Basketball Competition and came a close second which was an impressive effort. They competed again in 2020 and demonstrated to Christian Schools in NSW how talented they are, by easily winning every game and taking out the competition.
One player in this Primary team was Sophie V. She has been playing basketball for many years and just keeps getting better. She played an important role in the Primary teams and now, being in Year 7, is part of the U15 Girls team.
Out of school, Sophie has continued to develop and improve her basketball skills, with selection in the Gosford Rebels team the last couple of years. She loves the challenge of competition and thrives on playing other experienced players, even those much older than her.
This year, Sophie was selected to play in the CSSA Secondary Open Girls Team - a team comprised of players who could be 17-18 years of age. Keep in mind that Sophie is only in Year 7 and 13 years of age.
This CSSA team competed at the CIS Basketball Championships last week and Sophie had a fantastic time. To represent her school and CSSA at this elite basketball competition was definitely a great experience for Sophie and we congratulate her on such a wonderful achievement.

Beyond
Inside the walls, the world is grey
With boxes of clothes, dust, and clay
A single light escapes the day
And thro’ the window, sun does play
Past the window beyond.
Three beams of warmth shine through the blinds
And helpfully the outside chimes
A longing tune of hopeful times
So to the window, she does climb
Past the window beyond.
Beyond the window, is just green
With birds, and trees, and bugs, and breeze
A little bird begins to sing
Before another takes a-wing
Past the window beyond.
Golden branches sing a tune
With shapes of crimson, pink, and blue
Upon the leaves, lays joyous dew
With tiny feet among them too
Past the window beyond.
A trickle of gold forms a bird
Onto her hands she paints a verb
Walls obstruct her view of the world
But still, she finds a dancing whirl
Past the window, beyond.
She sees the day, she sees the night,
She only ever reaches wide
For green beyond the silenced light
So to the window, she does stride
To the window beyond.
Beyond the window, nature calls
A dampened tune of blue and gold
Outstretched, her fingers long to hold
The world beyond, and leave the cold
And pass the window beyond.
Tullia C
(Year 12, Advanced English)
This poem is a response for a writing task in Year 12 Advanced English that required students to reflect on "The View From My Window". The poem imitates the style and structure of Tennyson’s famous "The Lady of Shallot".
