School uniform is always an interesting topic of conversation amongst adults with school age children. Some don’t see the need for it or view it as an added and unnecessary expense. Some see it as important for identifying which school a child attends and that this should instil a sense of pride in the child. Some want a very formal uniform, others a very relaxed one. Many like it because it is a leveller socially and does not highlight socio-economic differences amongst children. The shape, colour, style, fabric and so on, are all causes of multiple perspectives, opinions and ideas.
Ask most teachers and they sigh, roll their eyes and tell you it is one of their least favourite things to enforce at school. This leads often to an inconsistent enforcement which then causes relational issues amongst staff. A common criticism of schools is their lack of proper enforcement of uniform and a comparison with other schools where students always wear the uniform correctly. Independent schools usually have a much higher expectation on them that they will enforce uniform with parents expecting that standards in such schools will be higher than the public system. This is often unfair on the public schools who face the same challenges we do.
GPCC faces all these issues and we have a minority of students who regularly fail to wear their uniform correctly. We run campaigns from time to time to correct the problem but it never quite goes away. There are no easy answers whatever we do but this is another example of where we can work together.
At the bottom of any uniform issue is the fundamental human problem of rebellion against authority. We have all done this especially as two-year-olds and teenagers! While the occasional shirt out or tie undone may simply be caused by distraction, most poor uniform wearing is a choice students make. Boys deliberately leave their shirts untucked, girls deliberately roll their skirts up, both often choose to wear a non-regulation jumper etc. These things do not happen by chance.
So, the answer really is to help a young person to think about why they are choosing not to follow the regulations adopted by the school and agreed to by their parents on enrolment. Our task is to help them deal with their rebellious spirit and to help them see that compliance is not always a bad thing but a good thing. Committing to established community standards makes for a better and happier community for all.
But we as teachers and you as parents need to work together and agree to uphold the standard ourselves by enforcing the regulations. In this we do not want to be legalistic but help our children to learn to pick their fights. Is uniform something really worth fighting over? Is it that damaging to our self-image to conform to the community standard? When everyone else is doing the right thing, why shouldn’t we? This is a good thing to work together on so that we grow a generation of young adults who know the value of cooperation and community spirit and are happy to find means of expressing themselves individually in a better way.

End of Term
We are coming to the end of another busy term. I would like to take the opportunity to thank our marvellous teachers and teacher aides for all their work in providing resources and interesting lessons for our students across the term. As you enter the holidays, please take time to build some significant memories with your children. Go for a bush walk or walk along our amazing beaches, visit the local library, invest in a new book to read or begin a family puzzle together. Kick a ball, go for a bike ride or discover a new park. Our children can learn just as much from being outside the classroom as they can inside the classroom. I pray you will have a safe and happy holiday and I look forward to much learning over the coming terms.
Focus on Reading – Vocabulary
Understanding the meaning of words helps your child to comprehend what they hear and read. You can build your child’s vocabulary by simply talking with them on a range of topics. When reading to your child, point out new words and provide a simple definition. Use the new word in another sentence. Read a wide variety of books to expose your child to new vocabulary or known familiar words used in a different setting. Perhaps you could have a word of the day that each family member needs to use 2 - 3 times throughout their conversations.
NAIDOC Assembly
This week Primary students heard from Urain – a Barranbinya woman from the Brewarrina region of NSW. Urain spoke to our students about the importance of country and the ways they can demonstrate sustainable practices to look after the lands that God has given us. Thank you to Mrs van Wyk for organising this for our College.

NAIDOC Mufti Day Wednesday 23 June
We will be having a NAIDOC Mufti Day to raise money for the Aboriginal church at Brewarrina. Students can wear colours of the Aboriginal flag – red, yellow and black, or clothing containing Aboriginal designs or art works.
Students will need to bring in a gold coin donation which will be collected during class time on Wednesday morning.
Secondary students will be having a sausage sizzle and cake stall. This is NOT for Primary students.
For safety reason, all students will need to wear enclosed shoes.
Year 5 Trip to Bathurst
On Thursday 24 June, Year 5 head off to Bathurst Goldfields for an immersion experience. On the trip out to Bathurst students will visit Featherdale Farm and hear about how Australian animals have adapted to their environment. They will learn about life on the gold fields and will even try their hand at gold panning. Please pray for our students and teachers over this time.

Head of School Awards
Head of School awards Terms 3 and 4
Our Student Representative Council has brought several suggestions over this last term, and one which will be implemented for Terms 3 and 4 is the change of the Head of School Award muffin. The students asked if they could be given a canteen voucher to the same value as the muffin and that way they can choose an item that they like. This is a valid suggestion and so from Term 3 students receiving a HOS Award will have a voucher that can be used at the canteen. This voucher will be for one item and will not give change. Students can choose an item from the recess menu the following day. A list of HOS Award items will be placed on the canteen window to choose from.

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary
It seems to have passed so quickly; we are now in the last week of Term 2. As we head towards a few weeks off from lessons, it is really important that our Year 12 students remain focused on the completion of Major Works and studying for their Trial Examinations which commence on 26 July. I know the long hard slog of the HSC is exhausting, but there is not much longer and now is not the time to lose focus or direction.
Please note some important things coming up early next term:

Year 10 Strength Potential and Direction Interviews occur in Week 2 on Monday 26 July and Tuesday 27 July 2021 for students and parents as we help focus students on their choices for next year.
More information will be emailed directly to parents over the coming weeks.

Paul Kelly Cup AFL Finalist
It is very exciting to announce that our Senior Primary Boys AFL Team will be competing in the State Finals of the Paul Kelly Cup in August. They qualified by winning
their Regional competition and will now represent our school and the Central Coast at this competition.
They will be playing their Final at Giants Stadium on Wednesday 18 August. We can’t wait for this one!
State Futsal Championships
We want to wish our Junior Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys Primary teams all the best at the State Futsal Championships next Tuesday in Maitland. After their amazing performances at Maitland Regional Competition, they now will compete in the challenging State Finals.
Zone Secondary Futsal
The U15 and Open Boys Futsal teams travelled up to Maitland last week for the Zone Secondary Futsal Competition. There they would be playing against other Christian Schools in our Hunter Zone.
Like all Zone competitions, the teams competing were very skilled and scoring wins was very challenging. Our two teams had a great day, passing the ball around very well and creating a number of scoring opportunities.
In the end, the U15 Boys finished 5th overall with the Open Boys placed 4th. Well done on a great effort!

Zone Secondary Basketball
Our U15 and Open Girls Basketball teams competed at the big Zone Secondary Basketball competition. The winning teams would then progress to the CSSA State Finals.
Both of our teams had a fantastic competition, with some close wins and losses. The teams that they played against were strong and many teams contained rep players. Eventually, our U15 girls just missed out on the Finals, while the Open Girls took out the Final and were crowned Zone Champions.
Well done to all the girls for their superb efforts on the day and we wish the Open Girls all the best for CSSA State.

CSSA Secondary Open Boys and Girls Soccer State Finals
At the Zone Soccer Gala Day in Tamworth earlier this year, our Open Boys and Open Girls teams dominated, winning their Finals and progressing to the next level being the CSSA State Finals.
These Finals were held at Jamison Park this past week and both of our teams had a wonderful day. Though there was some slight confusion with the grounds, both teams represented our school proudly and performed exceptionally well against some of the best soccer teams from Christian Schools in the State.
The Open Boys missed out on making the Semis while the Open Girls played in their Semis. The girls combined brilliantly in their Semi Final, winning and moving to the Final where they were beaten, but they were still finalists.
Superb effort by these teams to make it to CSSA.
CIS Secondary Touch Football Championships
This week, Declan R travelled to Sydney to compete at the CIS Secondary Touch Football Championships.
Declan was chosen in the CSSA Team several weeks ago, so competing at this level of competition is a true reflection of the talent that he possesses.
Congratulations to Declan on such a fine achievement!
GPCC Secondary AFL Years 7 and 8 Team
After their superb performance at the Regional AFL Competition for Years 7/8 Girls, our team has qualified for the State Finals. This is a superb achievement by this group of girls and we wish them all the best for their big competition.
Thank You to the Coaches
Thank you to all our parent coaches who have been coming to school on a regular basis to coach our teams. The professional way you instruct our teams is greatly appreciated:
- U15 Girls Basketball - Mr Andrew Vartan

NAIDOC Lessons
Primary students have started their NAIDOC lessons this week with Urain Warraweena, who is an artist, mother of six and worker at Brewarrina Aboriginal Cultural Museum. Urain has told us about her people on Baranbinja country near Brewarrina. She has shared her experiences of country and her knowledge of culture. Students have also enjoyed completing a craft using Aboriginal symbols. Urain showed us the fish trap symbols she uses in her artworks and explained how this practice worked. Brewarrina is a tribal meeting place and is well known in the area.
